SUSPECTED sea pirates have attacked a vessel transporting workers for Italian firm Agip in southern Nigeria, leaving at least one person dead, officials say.

Gunmen ambushed the vessel in an area of Bayelsa state in Nigeria's oil-producing Niger Delta region.

A spokesman for a military task force in the region confirmed one Nigerian man was killed.

The vessel was said to have been transporting workers to an oil facility.

"The boat conveying some staff of Agip was attacked by suspected sea robbers and one of the staff of the company died when he was attempting to escape into the river and drowned," said Lieutenant Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu.

A spokeswoman for Italy's ENI, the parent company of Agip, said the attack occurred on Thursday.

"A speed boat contracted by (Agip) was attacked and stolen," she said, adding that there were three people on board.

She said a Nigerian man who worked for the company drowned while the other two were safe.

A 2009 amnesty deal greatly reduced unrest in the Niger Delta region, but sporadic incidents continue to occur, including robberies, piracy and kidnappings.

Please don't justify The action of criminals who terrorize innocent people to their death. In the Jos case Senator Datong and the other legislator ran for their lives and died of exhaustion. I will not say this was a sign of cowardice - to run for your life even when you are not physically fit.

there r stil lots of sea pirates, militants well equipt in d creeks. If northernerns feel they have distabilized GEJ govt, i will tell dem dat boiz in d creek ar watching. Any attempt 4 d North to take over power 2015 wil either cause division of this nation or Nig will be producing 1ltr of crude per day. Lets watch and see.
