The problem is our society places too much premium and emphasis on credentials so people will stop at nothing to acquire the degree that will give them the qualification to land their dream jobs. The truth is, not all of us are well endowed and equipped with the mental capacity for white collar jobs but because of societal norms, most will not even consider pursuing careers in blue collar jobs even though that is where their potential for greatness lie.

About 15 of them or so are 2:1 and 1st class products.

The irony of it all is that, the 3 who passed all are all 2:2 products.

Na wah o nairalanders! una bad mouth o. evry post made is now seen as an opportunity for every Tom, D*ick and Harry to express thier derogatary skills. When u climb the mountain and shout that Nigeria's education system is in the gutters, where did u do your own studying...on Mars? The assesment made by the poster is in no way a yardstick for measuring our education system. All it shows is that he conducted a test for dumb as*s* candidates. Am quite new to nairaland and i can deduce from comments i have read on various topics that our educational system has successfully produced bright, articulate and creative products which can hold thier own in any area where they are put to test. ITS NOT THE SYSTEM, ITS THE MATERIAL. For God's sake we have all heard of GIGO!(garbage in, garbage out.). A dumb student is a dumb student, in Nigeria, China, USA, UK even on Phukin Pluto! I went to a primary school where my class teacher would send me to sell soap and other product to her colleagues in nearby schools from 8am till school closes atleast thrice a week which invariably meant that i missed all that was taught for that day, but am still the brightest bulb in any room i enter.i graduted with a 4.37 CGPA. While my peer who went to a private daycare, KG, nursery, primary, secondary school brought his courseforms for me to fill where he had already indicated his course of study as 'FARMACE'(pharmacy). Its not the system for God's sake. Its YOU!

WRONG
Please, it is HOMOPHONE, not SYNONYM. Homophone is each of two or more words having the same pronunciation but different meanings.....

I invited a carpenter for a job in my house. Infact, I was sincerely amazed when I heard his spoken english. This young man performed beyond ordinary man's imagination when he assisted my son to write an essay given from school. I do travel a lot, this my son confessed that several assignments that most graduates around had helped him to do scored him woefully. But this carpenter performed outstandingly!
What a great disappointment to Nigeria education! This reminds me of when i failed out of my sec. Sch., with my failure I was still the one helping most undergraduates to do their assignment. I swear! It is not by certificate. Lets stop ridiculing the artisans because they dont have University certificate. "We can do more than what your paper can do". Thank God for internet today, every time I post I make sure I dont write bad english because I learn and improve daily. Anyway, I'm proud to be an artisan! What about you? I know a mechanic who claims to be banker online. That's self deceiption. With my O'level, I've published four books. Thank God for the grace.
When my wife was about to deliver our third but last son, the doctor called me via phone, in fact, my wife later came to tell me that the doctor was very curious to know more about me from her. Why? This is because of all medical arguments we had on phone conversation. He thought I'm a medical practitioner as well. This is what many youth of today miss, they pursue certificate but not knowledge. There is difference between general knowledge and special knowledge. I thank God today I married a University secretary with 2-1. Maybe you have roof construction and aluminium covering that you need a competent specialist contact me via saintchrst@yahoo.com. Remain blessed.

The funny thing is, I noticed that even Americans (confirm on facebook, blackplanet, etc) usually write "I would of" rather than "I would have". They can't tell the difference between "of" and "have".

i do wonder too, kpmg conducted a test sometimes ago and only 3 out of about 30 passed. But still thats no basis for generalization...the set is a universal one and only a subset was tested.

So what is research? How do you find out about a whole if not by examining a part of it? Thats two separate cases of a high failure rate, and still no basis for generalization?
Do you even need this kind of reports before you know Naija's educational system is now a complete mess?

obo_man: If I'm in a position to interview candidates, creativity and problem-solving skills would be what I will be looking for, rather than their ability to spell.

Problem-solving skills make businesses thrive, creativity takes businesses to the next level.

Checking candidates' mastery of words is sometimes irrelevant in businesses and companies.

Sorry sir; this is not only a mastery of words test, it is basic comprehension. you have to comprehend a problem before you can solve it. in this context, it is necessary master the working language.

a 3rd class graduate i met once. could perfectly operate a cnc lathe machine and knew how to weild using ultra-sonic weilding. (i really wonder where he learnt all that from). this dude has a very poor command of English. yet he possess unbeatable practical knowledge that most first class-queen's-English speaking graduates dont have. then i asked myself. in a field like engineering. why make English languauge a priority? as an engineer 25% efficiency in English is okay. believe me. all those errors highlighted by the op has nothing to do with one's level of skillfullness and efficiency on a practical job. all i just see here is the usual Nigerian mentality.

Somehoe funny but it is the truth.
I will rather employ a candidate who wrot in pidgin than the one who wrote in short text. You know why? The short text is a sign of total unseriousness.
And who says the unseriousness of a few; is a basis for judging the rest? Short hand or shorts for words is an addiction; by my assessment; the advent of texting in gsm fones came with this flexible way of msgin gettin some people addicted to shorts and forgettin that its damagin! Although some people hide behind d cover of shorts to time their illiterate lives to some unnoticing recipients who would only believe that the sender actually is tryin to save space and time in their msgs!

i'm sorry, mr/mrs knockturnal, as a graduate with 4.37 CGPA, could you please define for us, a system without the material? this guy says three (3) out of sixty-seven (67) candidates, all graduates, actually knew the difference between the listed nine simple contemporaneous homophones. without any exaggeration this is scandalously alarming. you can not defend this anywhere. as it is here, the the material difference you are taking about is the three that passed, while the system produced the 67; that is to say, the norm is the 67 while the exception is the three. the system is supposed to help the dumb student to become knowledgeable, and anything short of that is an anomaly. this is the subject matter which is of serious consequence, and worthy of all the critical lamentations you are seeing here.

English to me shouldn't b a prerequisite! If u can deliver the job, fine! If u can go with german, spanish, dutch, chinese, swahili, etc and can get quality service rendered then to hell with who ever it is! D chinese that execute most jobs around today, are they so good in english? I agree with u 100%

Hello
Who said that English is not neccessary for an engineer.
Its more than neccessary,
In this day and age where u have to write reports, manage projects, make presentations and learn how to use various computer applications, I dare say that a good command of English is very neccessary for any proffession except those who work with deaf and dumbs.
@op
Nigeria is a country where graduates pursue paper rather than knowledge, because companies require them, and as for the test, its nothing new. I have seen scenarios where 3rd class holders out Performed 2.1 and vice versa.
We all know how bad the Nigerian educational system is, and I doubt if its gonna get better anytime soon.
But that is not to say that there aren't sound Nigerian graduates out there, u just have to look beyond papers and fantastic grades. Most times in Nigeria a 2.1 does not equal intelligence, quote me anywhere.

Great Ife, Great AKOKITES, Lions and Linoesses...etc, etc, etc, Shiiiooooor AWON OLODO, OLORI DOTA. BUT IS IT THEIR FAULT? PARTIALLY NOT. UNDERGRADUATES AND GRADUATES OF THE BABANGIDA ERA, WHEN NIGERIA EDUCATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURES RAPIDLY DETERIORATED ARE NOW LECTURERS, SENIOR LECTURERS AND, IN SOME CASES THAT I AM AWARE OF, PROFESSORS. WHAT YOU DON'T HAVE, YOU CANNOT GIVE.

OP: I guess your friend must have been looking for English students not really those with the corresponding potential. Why not ask questions based on the company setting? Once more, was their failure based on short text , spelling error or unable to define the words? Why not give questions that explores their dexterity? Even those that made it may not even do the main job well. My friends went for Bank test, she is a statistician, but was given essay on Boko Haram instead of calculation or bank related questions.
