I don't think any normal person would have the presence of mind to implement these so-called tips in a real life robbery situation. With an AK-47 pointed at your skull, your brain immediately goes into hibernation - and you're reduced to basic animal instincts. Let's not kid ourselves.

Anyways, those who have had these ugly experiences on the highways should please share more of the stories. I've escaped them by mere seconds on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway sometime ago (they had just finished robbing and were retreating into the bush when our vehicle ran into the scene, with the victims still on the floor), and that's about as close as I have come to experiencing this nightmare called highway robbery.

Please dont say a thing like this to an armed robber.Say....Please use condom "in your own interest".He will quickly ask why in my own interest then you tell him that you are HIV POSITIVE and you are travelling Abuja or Lagos etc for confimation test

Unless you want to die quicker, DO NOT SAY YOU'RE HIV POSITIVE!, when traveling on road, stop wearing tight clothes that exposes your shapes and all that. also put on alot of things that will likely make it hard to pull off in such situation. the quicker to UnCloth you, the easier for them to have you entered.

Lastly stop dressing as if you're going for a beauty pageant while traveling on Nigerian roads.
(By all means, get a female condom if possible, wear it always before traveling at night)

lilkech:
We all know that armed bandits have been laying ambush for unsuspecting motorists and travelers on our highways especially on the lonely stretch of road between the Benin by-pass and the town of Benin itself. I don't think our police force can help out at this particular area of the highway so we need to be prepared for the worst.

They manage to stop vehicles and buses by either throwing objects onto the road directly in the path of your vehicle, pretending to be servicing a broken down vehicle or they just COME OUT GUNS DRAWN AND DANGEROUSLY POINTING IT AT YOUR VEHICLE or worse still BLAZE AT YOU.

Very good suggestion man.
On Sunday at around 8:30pm around the ojudu berger market road I was pulled over and extorted by a lastma and a single police officer

If you are ever unfortunate enough to be stopped by those highway robbers, please take special heed to the advice I wish to give on this thread.

STEP 1

Once you notice the robbers trying to pull your vehicle over, just 'FLOOR IT', unless of course they have their guns already pointed directly at you from afar. In this case 'JUST STOP YOUR VEHICLE' because you wouldn't want to test if their weapons are loaded, or do you? I seriously hope not.

STEP 2

If your vehicle gets pulled over, do not make the mistake of trying to fight your way out of the situation because of the likely consequence (see step 1 above)

STEP 3

Normally at this stage the bandits will commence to quickly search you and the full vehicle for plunder able valuables. If you are in a commuter bus, then the bandits will force the doors open and coerce the passengers to RUN INTO THE BUSH adjacent the lane you were pulled over on (to the right). I prefer to run into the bush also but ON THE OPPOSITE LANE OF THE HIGHWAY or ON THE HIGHWAY ITSELF AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE (if the chance presents itself). If you were robbed on the road itself then forget about the next steps and GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE FAST.

IN THE NEXT STEPS IT IS ASSUMED THAT YOU ARE TRAVELLING ALONE. THIS IS BECAUSE YOU ARE ACTUALLY ON YOUR OWN AT THIS POINT, FORGET 'CROWD MENTALITY' AND USE YOUR BRAIN FROM HERE ON

STEP 4

Once the bandits demand that you run into the bush you can either choose to crouch and whimper in the bus (feint hearted) or dash out from the bus. Please remember to leave your traveling bags and heavy stuff in the bus before leaving it (no matter what you've got in it) as carrying them will slow you down and automatically turn you into a target for the bandits to single out. If you remained in the bus then just sit tight and await the return of the other members of your vehicle from the bush.

NOW IT GETS REALLY SERIOUS AND TRICKY FROM HERE

STEP 5

Once you are out of the bus and dashing into the jungle please DO NOT RUN TOGETHER WITH/ IN THE SAME DIRECTION WITH YOUR CO-PASSENGERS as the crowd mentality will cloud your judgment. You should under no circumstance run MORE THAT A FEW METERS INTO THE BUSH before falling on the ground and LAYING THERE FOR NO MORE THAN 10 MINUTES before getting up and slowly make your way back to the road in another direction from which either you or your co-passengers came into the bush. This is because the bandits will waste no time in plundering the bus/car and then taking off into the same bush themselves.

If you run too far into the bush YOU WILL DEFINITELY ENCOUNTER THE REST OF YOUR CO-PASSENGERS AS WELL AS THE MAIN GANG OF BANDITS (did you really think that the 3 or 4 guys that stopped your vehicle were all the members of the gang? Well, think again) plus you also run the risk of getting lost and losing your handy belongings (phones, wallets, purses e.t.c) in the confusing jungle marathon race that you and others would have participated in.

BUT IF YOU DID RUN DEEP INTO THE JUNGLE OUT OF FEAR, THEN READ ON.

STEP 6

Band together with other members of your vehicle and then coordinate within yourselves to present the bandits with the valuables you can afford to lose (yes, because the robbers MUST find you) and try to find a safe and traceable place to hide the items that you consider of high value to you. Remember to keep little cash for your transport fare aside just in case but remember that YOU MUST PRESENT THE ROBBERS WITH SOMETHING(S) OF TANGIBLE INTEREST TO BE CONSIDERED 'SAFE' AT THIS POINT. Failure to do so might cause the bandits to inflict injuries on you or worse still cost you your life.

Once and after you have been robbed just immediately proceed to make your way back to your vehicle which must still be parked on the highway itself (unless of course your driver has left you behind), THANK THE LORD YOUR GOD and continue with your journey.

Have a nice travel experience and safe journey.

Very nice suggestion man.May We not experience this sad event.

I was helpless as my little brother was sitting next to me I decided not to do anything that would jeopardize our safety,I just told them that I was a corper and that the vehicle belonged to my uncle so they should free me.I immediately called my uncle and he suggested I give them any small amount I had,I grudgingly pulled out a tattered 1000 naira note and handed the bastards.before I could say yay, they lept out of the car and gave me my key.

Could anyone give hints on what actions to take when confronted with these kind of evil/greedy people in very tight situations.

NB: I know 1000 was too much to give the pricks but it was the 'wrinklest' note I could lay my hands on at the time.

Come to me, and I'll give you only one single 'Oruka' [not two but just one, only one!], the next time you meet any annoying LASTMA official, touch him with it. And he'll fall down and be screaming, 'milk! milk!! milk!!!.' How bout that?

I've had crazy experiences on the highway but for the rest of my life, i will never forget the 2nights dat wld have been the last nights of my life & dis 2 nights happened within the space of 1wk (2 fridays precisely). I was traveling to lag on 21/06/2002 to finalize arrangement for my I.T & took a night bus. We left upper iweka, onitsha immediately it struck 12midnight and as soon as we got down from the Niger bridge on the asaba axis, we saw other luxury buses parked and we joined them. It turned out that robbers laid siege @ the total filling station after the force command of Nigeria Police that is not so far from our location. The drivers held a quick meeting and it was agreed that all the excorts from the over 20buses lined up along the highway will join a 911 truck dat will drive in front while the rest buses come from behind. It was a plan which worked perfectly as they shot sporadically to scare the robbers.

meanwhile, the robbers had succeeded in robbing 2 buses and the occupants ran into the nearby bush which was a highland. When we passed the point of robbery where their bus was still parked, the bus escorts shot high and up and some of the passengers hiding in the bushes on the highland were shot dead (it was dark so it was not intentional). I only found out abt this in church on sunday morning when a member of my family church came for thanksgiving and gave the testimony. I met him and told him what happened.

The following week wednesday, i went back to enugu with day bus and on friday, 28/06/2002 i decided to travel back to lag, wit night bus, cos i had to resume work on monday, 01/07/2002. We left upper iweka, Onitsha at the same 12midnight and as we crossed over the bridge, we saw other buses parked cos of robbery at the same spot. Our driver came down from his side (he didn't open the door to the passenger side) and started inquiring wat to be done. immediately, the robbers drove down to meet us and shooting anyhow. D driver ran away, we were trapped in the bus, i laid down on the floor but as i saw a woman of d same size as Mama Nigeria (PEJ) jumping out of the window, i summoned courage and jumped out too into the bush. we ran for some metres and after 10minutes, we heard police siren. We came out and watched. After another 10minutes, the police came and told us that the coast was clear and we can go. All the buses started runiing but my bus driver refused to go cos 2ppl didnt return to the bus. A man and woman slapped him as other buses left us, me self almost cry but the driver refused to start his engine. Immdiately, we heard gunshots and we ran again into the bush. After 20minutes, we saw a car driving towards us, full of bullet holes and d driver miraculously escaped unhurt. He told us that several buses were caught and that the police ppl also told them that the coast was clear (hence, we were all setup by the police). They robbed those buses thoroughly and we just waited till 3am wen we saw buses coming from the opposite lane. That was when the 2guys dat refused to come out of hiding re-appeared. As we got to the robbery spot, there bodies littered all over the place. The robbed all the buses that fell for the police scam, & the body count was abt 60 before we left the scene. I entered lagos looking like a mad man, with grass all over my body and my sandals got lost in the bush. Even the mama that is selling slippers at cele bus stop along oshodi-apapa highway carried cane to flog me like say i be mad man. But thank God someone saw me and helped me get home. Since that night, night journey have been deleted from my dictionary.

The guy just gave you an advice and he spoke very well.. Sometimes they will ask everyone to run into the bush either before or after the robbery..

Its up to you to read it or leave it... When (the gods forbid it) you find yourself in similar situation, you would wish you had spent the extra seconds to memorize it.

My few solutions are :

1. Once i go past berger en route the eastern parts, the least i do is 140km/hr, at that speed or more, it takes a rocket launcher to get at me
2. I carry a fake BB fone (this old chinkos) and i will gladly surrender that
3. I keep my bulk cash safe in different hidden spots in the car and i hold about N7 to N10k handy with my ATM card. It worked when i stopped just before Benin and some guys appeared from no where. I was driving with my mum and i couldn't refuse her the call of nature. I surrendered the N7k, told them i was planning to do ATM inside the town and offered my dummy of a fone. They asked me never to stop there again. They did not bother to search the car or even my person, i had more than N100k in various parts of the car.
4. The only way i stop matching the gas pedal is if a bullet hits me

Correct Guy.. when faced with an Armed-Robbery Situation. only one thing can save you - Co-operate like a full-time Mumu and do everything you are asked to do because at that point, you are in the Devil' Claws and Heaven is somehow never in sight when a robbery is taking place. Your Life is worth more than any valuable you think you cannot live without. Armed Robbers know all about what the poster has placed for us to read, they are not as intelligent, they learned from years of experience so all this expo won't help you because they have invigilated many robbery exams and failed many candidates fatally.
