I know a lot of young Nigerian undergraduates and graduates would seek an opportunity to travel to study in USA. In this write-up, I would just give you useful hint on the requirements, how to about it and people you should see.

Before applying to study in any American school, you should be ready to take some test in Nigeria that you would add to your application. So we take a look at documents you should have before applying.

International Passport
If you do not have an international passport, then you are not ready to study abroad. Before you even think of an American education, you must have a passport. To apply for a passport, you can visit Nigeria Immigration Service website. If you are not a citizen of Nigeria and you are reading this, then you need to visit your country's immigration service.

Test and Examinations
American universities always require that prospective students have good scores in certain test accepted by the school. Now, I know some institutions might not ask you for it or say it is optional but what you should know is that it keeps you safe. That is one of the reasons a lot of students are refused visa at the embassy. You need to have to prove to them at the embassy that you can stand the education in America.

Now to the test, undergraduates would be required to take TOEFL and SAT (and graduates would take GRE and TOEFL. I would explain these exams now.

1. TOEFL - This is an acronym for Test Of English As A Foreign Language. It is a test organised by ETS and its main aim is to test how well you speak English. It test how well you would communicate with the common American and how you can interpret or communicate in writing. Its really not a big deal test but it could count at the embassy so take it serious. Undergraduate and Graduates can submit this.

2. SAT - The Scholastic Aptitude Test is strictly for undergraduates. The exam test your ability to cope with the education system in USA as an undergraduate. It also acts as a screening test so it is highly important you prepare for this test. There are lots of centers in Lagos and other cities in Nigeria where you can register for the test. I would refer you to some at the end of the article.

3. GRE - Graduate Records Examinations is well spelled out. It is strictly for those who want to have their masters program in USA. This exam would be used to test your ability to do well in USA. Some schools might not require it but it is better you take it. You could use as a tool to show how serious and intelligent you are when applying for a visa. It might not be important but its always necessary.

Transcripts
A transcript is a document that contains a record of all your scores in secondary school or the university. If you are an undergraduate, your transcript is a record of your scores from your first year in the college to the last. It is different from your WAEC or NECO results. It is your report card in school. You can get this from your college.

For graduates, your transcripts is a record of all your scores and CGPA in the university. You can always apply for that from your university's Student Records Center or see your Student Union Government for assistance.

Medical documents
Don't think you can gain entrance to US, if you have a disease that can spread via air like tuberculosis. You would be required to prove you have been immunized and you are free from some transferable diseases. This would be documented and signed by a doctor.
