well said proudlyafrican.
I do not know anywhere in the world where there are no union agents[yes, agberos are union agents],did the cost of transportation reduced after banning of police checkpoints?bus drivers will use every trick to resist paying the dues they owe their union, same thing with okada riders, even bus drivers will happily set agberos on a passenger that refuse to complete fares.agberos have entrenched a culture of squalor, rudness and general nuisance in trying to master their environment,i even heard that they lobby to keep some roads unfit for cars so as to make monitoring of buses convinient for themselves.agberos need to evolve, but only a naive person will expect them to disappear.

Fashola has finally grown some expected spheres to dislodge Tinubu's election winning machinery. NURTW is the dreaded militia that rigs election for ACN, thats after Tinubu 'anoints' a Governorship Candidate. If Fashola will stick to his spheres and ban the NURTW, and grow some spheres to revoke the contract of Tinubu's Alpha-Beta from collection of Internally Generated Revenue, then Lagos will be free from the hands of the Great Thiefnubu, the Lion of Bourdillon.

Re: NURTW Ban: Fashola Is Joking by stillme(m): 10:19am On Aug 05, 2012
I think we need to get things straight. He only banned the method of their operation not their activities. It is impossible to ban the union because they are also one of the sources of revenue to Lagos state. He is only gearing them up toward having a legal way of collecting their dues from commercial buses.

NovusHomo: NovusHomo: Find them jobs? Who told you Lagos people work? They are busy doing Agbero, Area Boys, Area Girls, and what not. In Lagos, most positions, in practically all sectors, are held by people from other States.

humpito: U are a fool. I'm from Badagry and am about completing my masters. I work in a bank, my brothers are also gainfully employed. Then what is the premise for your assertion? I never knew someone can be this foolish.

NovusHomo:You are EGUN (Kiri shosho...), or is it AGONYIN. I wrote 'Lagos people', not 'Lagos State people'
You are about completing your Master's (degree), yet you can't decipher simple usage of the English language. huh huh Well, if you insist you are from Lagos Island, Isale Eko, and those other 'civilized' places, I believe you have earned it if only through your non-comprehension of the national language. Such illiterate doing his 'master's... huh huh huh huh huh Besides, what is it with this inferiority complex that makes you people deny your origin? Well sha...I'm off to bed. its 3am in my part of the world.
U are a miserable person. I'm sure your level of ignorance sent u to that strange land. Frying burger in another man's country, does not make u superior. Lagos people are people from Ikeja,Lagos Island,Badagry,Ikorodu and Epe. I'd advise u to educate your mind before spewing rubbish on this forum. Concerning the origin issue,we all know that the history of Nigeria is not complete without Badagry.

Re: NURTW Ban: Fashola Is Joking by basking4me: 11:26am On Aug 05, 2012
NURTW is a union and not a government agency moreso it is a subset of the federal body that runs in Lagos.

Every state has its own Transport union as represented by RTEAN ie Road Transport Employers Associatin of Nigeria. These are the guys that normally should be handling union matters within (intra-state) the state and for NURTW to be handling interstate vehicles.

However due to politics and violent nature of nurtw, it has become a tool in the hands of politicians used at its advantage.

Nurtw is a federal union operating and causing mayhem in lagos state, they should be scrapped from the state and even the state RTEAN should not be allowed at the parks.

There are new technologies that can be put in place by them to collect their dues without physically being present at the parks.

This has been done before (Tinubu Administration) and I think we would learn a lot by examining what happened then.

The Tinubu Administration barred the NURTW from all bus stops, motor parks and garages in the state. The administration created rehabilitation centres and skills acquisition centres to take care of the agberos and area boys that would be affected by the order.

1) The NURTW went to court. The judge ruled in favour of the NURTW, stating that the government's action violated the rights of members of the NURTW as enshrined in section 41 of the constitution (Fundamental Rights: Freedom of Movement). The judge said that motor parks, bus stops and garages were public places and therefore the NURTW had a right to be at these places.

I was very critical of the government at this time. They should have banned the "activities" of NURTW at the park, rather than simply barring them from the parks. The levies imposed by the NURTW are illegal taxes. Only the federal, state and local governments are empowered to collect taxes. If the union forces people to pay levies, whether the people are members or not, then the union is engaged in extortion, which is illegal and it is collecting illegal taxes. Drivers have a right to choose not to belong to the NURTW (section 40 of the constitution). Note that the Fashola administration has banned their activities.

2) Homeless people, area boys, lunatics, beggars and agberos were sent to the rehabilitation centres. Tests were conducted on them. Lunatics were sent to the mental hospital, drug addicts were detoxified, beggars and homeless people were given a choice between learning a skill, going to jail, or repatriation to their states of origin. Inmates of the centres were taught tailoring, baking and other skills. Upon graduation they were given a loan to start a business.

However, some inmates at the Ita-Oko Island rehabilitation centre protested some punishment meted out to them and burned down the centre. http://www.nairaland.com/400138/area-boys-lagos-ibadan-action

The levies are not taxes, they are union dues. There is a difference. NURTW like every other union in the state/federation is allowed to collect union dues from their members, no? It is a sort of membership fee, totally different from tax. The membership dues are used to fund the various activities which the union engages in. There are other unions in Nigeria doing exactly what NURTW does. If Fashola wants to ban the NURTW, fine, but, then he has to extend the same arbitrariness to other unions like NUJ, NUT, NLC, NUPENG etc. Lets just ban all unions all together, so the govt can phuck us all in the a/s/s/.
Re: NURTW Ban: Fashola Is Joking by naptu2: 12:24pm On Aug 05, 2012
And that's precisely the problem/issue. NUJ levies dues on its members. You are not compelled to pay NUJ dues if you are not a member. You could even choose to leave the union. NURTW "officials" force members and non members to pay the "levies". You must pay up or have your vehicle smashed, I.e you have no choice.

I was going to comment on this, but I was distracted. So let's go back to the past in order to imagine what the future could be.

1) The Army vs Agbero saga: During the Tinubu era, some agberos killed an army official. Soldiers subsequently went crazy and attacked any agbero they saw. For about 2 to 3 weeks agberos vanished from Lagos bus stops. Senior officers later intervened and got the soldiers to hand over arrested (and tortured) agberos to the police/state government. I know Colonel Marwa was able to curb their menace by setting up a task force and posting soldiers and MOPOL to bus stops, but I don't remember that period very well.

2) The City Bus vs BRT experience: In 2001/2002 the Tinubu Administration banned danfo and molue buses from Ikoyi, Lekki and Victoria Island as a prelude to banning them from the whole of Lagos. The government allowed private companies to bid for licenses to run transport services on the Island. The biggest franchisee was City Bus, a company created by Cross Country Limited.

Agberos went crazy on Lagos Island, destroying City Bus buses and bus stops because they were deprived of the money they extort from danfo and molue buses. Students of Nigerian Institute of Oceanography annd Marine Research also went crazy because commercial buses were scarce and City Bus fares were higher than the fares charged by danfo and molue buses. The project failed and collapsed.

The government decided to create a BRT system in Lagos. This time it had learnt its lesson from the City Bus experience. They therefore co-opted NURTW into the project. NURTW are one of the franchisees in the Lagbus project. Therefore, the government may speak to top members of the union and devise a way in which the union can collect its dues without extorting money from drivers at the bus stops, motor parks and garages.
