Nigerians have good jobs in UK (enough Of Sad Stories) by Zechy09: 8:32pm On Aug 07, 2012
This thread is as a result of numerous threads on nairaland about nigerians in diaspora suffering so much. I want to create an avenue for nigerians abroad to encourage one another and tell the ones about to come that that it is not that bad. I will start with my story.:

I studied one of the oil and gas MSc courses in UK, graduated and started looking for a job in the UK. I had to start working as a security man (bouncer) in a club here. I also worked in spar as a door man while looking for a job. Some of our mates laughed at us (my friends and I) for doing security jobs and they moved to nigeria. Out of 10 that moved to Nigeria, only one got a good job in shell, the others ended in banks and other one man businesses. Out of 15 that stayed back and did security work, care work and other menial jobs while looking for a professional work, 14 have so far gotten professional jobs. Mind you, it is not easy as the last one got a job in schlumbeger UK last 2 weeks after 16months of job search and security work.
I myself did security work for 9 months and got a professional job in an oil and gas firm( TO GOD BE THE GLORY).

Please encourage others with your success story and tell people in Naija to understand that menial jobs are used to pay bills while searching for professional job. Do not laugh at people doing such jobs as most of the naija people in oil sector here did security or care work.

Interestingly I have lived in the UK for about 10 years and I have never had a menial job (thank God). I came to the UK as a student fully funded by my parents and while studying did not have a job as my parents thought it would be distracting. I never had as much money as my friends who had part time jobs or wealthy parents but I had enough and I was content. After my undergraduate degree (well more like during my final year), I probably applied for more than 50 jobs and did not get any job offer. Called home and begged my parents to allow me do a Masters - well more like fund it and they very reluctantly agreed. I believe I discovered nairaland during my masters some 6 years ago. Started my masters straight after my first degree and before I finished my masters, I had a good offer from an oil & gas firm. After some time, I moved on to financial services and steadily built my career. Speaking to my mum recently, she said "you are always lucky with these things" because all my jobs have literally landed on my lap and I thank God for the opportunities He has given me.

I think people in Nigeria are always so quick to put people abroad down for whatever reason and make comparisons to justify their own circumstances. When I compare myself to friends that moved back home, I really struggle to see how their lives are much better than mine. I have to admit though that I miss having help - driver when you are tired, maid to clean &cook after a hard day's job. But would I trade my life for the madness in Nigeria - not too sure but home is home so at some point I will look to relocate to Nigeria.

@Somebody, I am happy to hear your story. There are so many of us here that have very good stories to tell. I don't know about other places as i am in Aberdeen and almost every good oil and gas company has a Nigerian engineer at mid level - management. I wish i could get my friends to post their experiences as well. One of the reasons i opened this thread was to get people in Nigeria to stop putting down people in UK as if everyone flips burger and also understand that the ones that flip burger will get professional jobs with time. My friend that did security with me three years ago has been working for wood group as a snr engineer earning 600pounds per day for the past 15months (contract position). This is just one of the numerous stories.

Please guys keep it coming!!!!

Hi guys, im coming to study Telecommunications Engineering next month in london...i have a computer science bsc. Luckily my career path is one that favours pro certificatios and i have a string of them under my belt, CCNP CCDP and some others. Im thinking of coming and actually voluntering to work for free durig my msc despite my highly placed certs. This i hope can help me with an eventual job placemnt, referral or atleast just having the work experience. What dyu think? Thanks

@Zechy09, Aberdeen is actually one city that Nigerians should be proud of their success there because it is hard to see a layabout in Aberdeen. Its either you are studying, just finished studying or working professionally with one of the oil & gas companies.I know a lot of Nigerians in Aberdeen do quite well - I mean even Shell etc send their Nigerian staff on cross posting and provide housing etc so I know a lot of people live comfortably there. I know people can only relate to their own experiences but it irks me when people try to generalise and make it seem like everyone in the UK is suffering when that isn't the case.

How many Nigerians coming to the UK for a better opportunity take time out to do proper research on school reputation, career prospects for particular disciplines, work permit restrictions etc. I will be shocked if a Nigerian studied Petroleum Engineering at say Imperial College and can't have their pick of jobs in Nigeria or UK. Anyways, lets hope people coming to the UK learn to plan better. I always tell people if you can't afford a decent school in the UK, just forget it and don't waste your money because you will join a million other youths who already have a distinct advantage over you - no restrictions on their residency.

@I am Fenriz, sorry I don't know about IT jobs. I do know that a lot of Nigerian guys are IT contractors and make a decent salary but I don't know what certifications are required. You can do an internet search for vancacies for IT contractors and see what their requirements are.

@somebody thanks alot ma'am...ive been doing my homework well and i found out that MSC graudates that want to settle in london now have two choices, either to get employed by a company willing to sponsor them, or they can startup a business and apply for visa extension under the Tier 1 Graduate Enterpereneur scheme. That said, what are the chances of getting a job with an engineering masters and if threading the business line what are the chances of coming up with a business that the UKBA will see as one viable enough to contribute to the countries GDP? Cos frankly any encouragement from you guys will be appreciated based on the many discouragemnet ppl give me on working in UK. Frankly im making plans to just run to the US immediately after the masters. Soemebody, i wldnt mind connecting with u wen i arrive...

Consoling should be more like it.

There are opportunities in UK I agree but certainly not as much as there used to. Take away the insecurity and infrastructural challenges, which in themselves represent another platform of opportunities, Nigeria is the virgin land of great and unharnessed potentials

Educate me about the bolded. How many people have been able to tap from this? Or make use of this? How many people are able to utilize resources the way they ought to or desire to?

You guys have been truly blessed.

I hope I can have a similar testimony, although Her Majesty's Govt or whoever have made it almost impossible to get a good job now. I hope you guys plan to go back home someday with the years of experience you have gained!

Holy crap ! Familiar stories of "oil and gas industry".

Now this reminds me of a honest guy in NNPC , Abuja who said that our diaporans are consciously and unconsciously being used as mecenaries in our oil and gas industry.

Now MOD's, are you guys gonna hide or ban my post from saying it as it is ?

Quite clearly you are missing the point @op.

The MAJORITY of people who leave this shores like you do not have sponsors, do not have placement in the upscale schools and have no werewithal to live well.

The point poeple try to make is YOU & VERY SMALL GROUP OF COLLEAGUES are a distinct minority. I daresay even if you stayed in Nigeria, you would have a massive advantage.

Do you have any idea the number of people who emigrate yearly to that same UK, Scotland etc? Do a head count of the "successful“ and do a ratio to the "unsuccessful“ ! Take a conservative estimate of 2 thousand a year.

It didn't matter where you are, but most people start small and struggle for a while till a breakthrough. There are success stories everywhere, however its tougher abroad where many Nigerians are either not citizens already or don't have those deep family connections or network.
I have worked cutting grass and having dog shit over my face, and that is as a graduate but today I'm a very happy man. It took longer than planned but it happened.

UK still rewards merit. I do not know any Nigerian who graduated with a 1st class in a UK university and is jobless for a long time. 3 of my friends got offers within 2 months of graduation. Some of these companies help them sort out visa issues, but not all.
Having said that, things are changing a lot. UK is going broke, and that is obviously having its toll on foreigners, no matter how intelligent you are. Just last month, an advert for job was put up by the coy I work for. We needed 4 grads and got over 200 applications. This is a specialised field and the requirements were strict in the first instance. I was highly surprised by the number of applications. It used to be that once you get a 2:1, you're safe. Now 1st class is no longer safe, so I think folks must be ready to go extra mile.

If it was Nigeria. There would be 10,000 applications for 4 vacant positions.

You don't have the business acumen nor the mental capacity to thrive in Nigeria that is why you went to a distant land to wipe their asses in order to be elible to crumbs thrown from their tables.
