Egypt leader Mursi orders army chief Tantawi to resign Relations between Mr Mursi (left) and Field Marshal Tantawi (right) have been tense Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi has ordered the retirement of the powerful head of the country's armed forces, Field Marshal Mohamad Hussein Tantawi, a presidential spokesman has said. He also said a constitutional declaration aimed at curbing presidential powers had been cancelled. Mr Mursi, who was elected in June, is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Relations between the Brotherhood and the military have been tense since the fall of President Hosni Mubarak. It is not clear whether the president has the power to sack the head of the armed forces, or whether Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi will accept the moves. The BBC's Yolande Knell in Cairo says the president's intervention is clearly an attempt to take decisive action in his tug of war for control with the armed forces. Constitutional question Under an interim constitutional declaration issued before Mr Mursi was sworn in, the president cannot rule on matters related to the military - including appointing its leaders. The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (Scaf), which issued the declaration, also dissolved the Egyptian Parliament, which is dominated by the president's Islamist allies. As head of the Scaf, Field Marshal Tantawi became Egypt's interim ruler after President Mubarak was ousted following mass protests in February last year. Sunday's presidential announcement also said armed forces chief of staff Sami Annan was retiring. Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-19234763#FBM110892 |

Good move by the president. field marshal Tantawi is a dictator an ally of the former president Mubarak. the president now retains power as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and the parliament can now reconvene. |

na2day!: Nigerians won't grasp what you talking about. You are very enlightened and understand global politics. A lot of us didn't even know who kept Mubarak in power for all those years. No Dictator stays in power that long without the support of some powerful nations. I can assure you if Abacha had been cooperative with western nations; let them have their way with our resources, he would have been in power till today. 2 Likes |

Lordave: elucidate please. My brother, this situation is going to give even the American secretary of state(hillary) sleepless night tonight! We all know, the Islamic brotherhood are chameleons (after the revolution, they promised not field a presidential candidate, but when the coast was clear, they immediately fielded Morsi). They have links with many Islamic hardliners like Hamas, Hez et al in the middle east. Imagine the scenario where they control the army? That means - Sinai is no longer safe (It hasn't been safe anyway since the revolution) Hamas will now have official pass to bring in their weapons instead of tunneling like rats The Sinai will immediately become a staging port for terrorist attack into Israel. |

ebamma: israel has never and will never be afraid of egypt, the first war egypt fought with israel, the lost, israel has got more advanced weapons than egypt and in case of a war israel will beat egypt hands down War is not as easy as you think, we are not talking about weapons now, Are you aware the same America that is arming Israel with advanced weapons is also arming Egypt? Sane Governments do their best to support neighbors that will be friendly to them and go out of their ways to undermine those who won't. If Morsi have his way, Israel will become a giant Bull's eye pinned to the wall. |

That is a very neat political move. As soon as he resigns, next phase should be massive retirement of the rank and file of the military. |

muslim brotherhood is looking for power. Agreed the president should be in charge of the army but his party's rhetoric for the past few days has been taunting and provocative. They don't want the peace treaty signed by the two countries any more. these guys are going to use their fanaticism to kill themselves. 2 Likes |

Billyonaire: That is a very neat political move. As soon as he resigns, next phase should be massive retirement of the rank and file of the military. I still think Morsi has just shot himself in the leg! Tantawi cannot be making mouth without the support of the US, they will rather destabilize Egypt again than allowing anything to threaten Israel. 1 Like |
