The Anambra State Government has concluded arrangements with world football governing body, FIFA, to build an international standard football stadium to boost the game’s development in the South-East.

The project is part of the ongoing FIFA Goal Project in the country, which is meant to re-enforce the development of football in rural communities.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Dr. Edozie Aroh, gave the information to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Ogidi near Onitsha on Friday.

Aroh said the government had provided a large expanse of land in Ogidi in Idemili North Council Area for the project, adding that the land was previously used by footballers for training.

“We have got approval from the state government to site an international stadium here in collaboration with FIFA through the FIFA Goal Project.
“So, soon it will come to be. We already have existing provisions, existing land which belongs to the government and which we are going to convert for the project,” he said.

The commissioner said that Ogidi was chosen because of its central location and proximity to abundant human resources as well as a good transport network.
“It is accessible to people who are needed for the project by virtue of its proximity to populous towns like Nkpor, Okpoko, Awkuzu, Oba, Onitsha, Nnewi and Asaba.
“It is near the airport in Asaba and that will make it accessible to people coming from outside Nigeria.
“Anytime it is completed and programmes are taking place there, we expect that a lot of people will attend from within and outside the country,” he added.

Aroh said the state government was keen about the project and was following it up with FIFA.
In his contribution, the Chairman, Transition Committee of Idemili North Council, Ralph Nnabuife, lauded FIFA and the government for locating the project in Ogidi.

“It will help us a lot to contain vices among youths as well as create jobs and commerce opportunities in the council area for traders and crafts men and women.

“As you know, football today is a big profession that has huge financial benefits, and we believe our youths will take advantage of the project to better their lives,” he said.

More than 65% of the professional footballers in Nigeria are Igbos so there is no reason not have this in Igboland

Nigeria as a whole does not need any new international stadiums or airports as existing ones are grossly mismanaged and underutilized.
Re: FIFA, Anambra Govt. To Build International Stadium by GAR3TH(m): 10:17am On Aug 17, 2012
Complete waste of funds and misplaced priorities. I still dont understand why these people build stadiums that no one can even afford to watch, just look at NPL matches. When the bulk of Anambra is yet to see any sign of development the state government will rather waste billions on a stadium. Pathetic

It's a good development, for those complaining that it's a waste of state funds, I beleive it's being funded by FLFA, not state government. Perhaps the new stadium will motivate the building of infrastructures, if anything, in that area. Anambra deserves a stadium

Great development.

Anambra deserves it, but on one condition if only they will not embezzle the money as usual.

Just like Airport project in Oba then.

Rubbish mr Obi and Fifa u guys should go get another place for ur project cos that land is the only land left for us after a land dispute between Ogidi and Nkpor people. Are we even sure Mr Obi is telling us the truth from what am seen that is the stractagy they want to adapt in settling the land dispute. Honestly they are not going to build anything they are just desiveing my kings men.

And you think the international stadium when built can not bring about this ur so called development? Listen serious govts do not concentrate all attention on one sector alone, diversiication is key to national development. Pple have kald for international world class sporting facilities to improve the dev. of sports in the country, why u cant view this in line with dat call is only known to you. I will say good job Obi, bring it to fruition and my Imo will tap in.
