too black too strong! Julius Malema calls for Jacob Zuma to resign over "massacre" of 34 striking miners South Africa's firebrand youth leader, Julius Malema, has called for President Jacob Zuma to resign over the of "massacre" of 34 striking workers near a British-owned platinum mine last week ![]() Peta Thornycroft in Johannesburg 4:18PM BST 18 Aug 2012 Mr Malema, who was expelled from the African National Congress four months ago, made his comments during a visit on Saturday to the Marikana platinum mine in the country's north-west, where the miners died during clashes with police on Thursday. Backing the miners' call for a higher pay from the mine's owners, he said that South Africa's mines should be nationalised and that the strikers should not return to work until they were paid more than double their present salaries of around £400 a month. The involvement of Mr Malema will dramatically raise the stakes in the controversy. A firebrand politician, he has accused Mr Zuma of doing little to help South Africa's poor, many of whom claim the ruling ANC has enriched only a small black elite. The ANC's reputation has been put at stake because the union that has led the strike, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, has accused the rival National Union of Mineworkers, of being too close to both the ANC and the mine's owners, Lonmin PLC. Mr Malema said President Jacob Zuma had presided over the "massacre of the people of South Africa. How can he call on people to mourn those he has killed? He must step down." As a police helicopter hovered above a bare field where the miners were killed, a list of those who died was released by Lonmin. Related Articles The list was posted up outside the nearby Andrew Saffy Memorial Hospital where many of the injured were treated after police opened fire against striking miners. As Mr Malema went into Wonderkop Village, as the shack settlement is called, near the Marikana mine, his aides called on the police to withdraw. Police moved their vehicles further from the huge crowd which had gathered to hear Mr Malema, the wealthy former president of the ANC youth league. Ululating women welcomed Mr Malema with traditional ANC songs and a few were holding placards. One read: "R500 for killing police from Musina to Cape Town" A woman explained that her placard meant that anyone who could kill police officers from South Africa's northern boundary to its southern tip would receive a reward of about £50. Mr Malema's aide, Floyd Shivambu who was also kicked out of the ANC, criticised the police: "Most of the people were shot at the back, indicating that they were running away so police actions were not justified," he said. The massacre happened after days of unrest and violence at the mine in which ten people, including two policemen were killed a week ago. Police said they had been making progress until late Thursday and were negotiating with union leaders, but the crowd of about 3,000 strikers, gathered on a hill, would not disperse Police say some of the strikers had guns. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowd, and then as the strikers began to descend from the hill towards an informal settlement, police opened fire and within two minutes the dusty field was littered with bodies and injured men. "Miners around the country should stand in solidarity with the miners at Lonmin," Mr Malema added. Political analysts say Mr Malema's intervention among tense miners and grieving families was part of his campaign to discredit Mr Zuma, who is seeking another term as president of the ANC at its congress in December. Mr Zuma was called back to South Africa from Mozambique on Friday, where he was the main speaker at a regional summit. At a press conference on his return, he said he would order a commission of inquiry into the deaths at the mine. |

panafrican: You are a fucktard! I will celebrate the demise of moronic savages. panafrican: Fucktard, go and get white people that murder others and then challenge authorities with weapons and see whether they will not be slaughtered. Go and read on WACO! panafrican: Zuma can be proud, his government is drinking the tears of widows grieving for the loss of their husbands. Next time, they should marry human beings. If you had a brain, your sympathy would be with the innocent people their husbands helped kill. Those innocent people's wives, children, brother, sisters and parents are mourning about their senseless death. |

africaunite: To answer a question why they were armed, I would start by saying there's no strike in south africa without traditional weapons, its a traditional thing. You can even google search that a south african man especially zulus are inseparable from their traditional weapon, every man has a spear its their tradition, just like every christian has a bible. Don't talk nonsense majority of protests in SA are peaceful but media always go for the ones that creates sensation to create the impression that africans are a bunch of violent uneducated people and that africans will never progress. Talking about zulu's the majority of the people who protested are migrant workers. You watched a few Zulu cultural documentaries and movies now you come here and tell us who live with zulu people that they are savage backward people who can't solve there problems without resorting to violent means what a joke. The westernized propaganda machinary has certianly influenced your way of thinking and aproach to south africa and africa without you looking at the western companies expliotation of africans as the main cause of what transpired my brother. |

panafrican: Do you have a problem homosexuals in south africa that got the right to do whatever they want. South africa's constitution gave them the right to do as they please you Tree Hugging Baffoon. You call yourself a Panafricanist yet you deny people who has a different view the freedom to associate with whoever they so choose how ironic and conterdictary. I guess that's how you were raised you still think that woman must cook and clean and they shouldn't work or earn a decent living. Panafricanist still embraces poligamy yet you talk poo abt Zuma who still practise this today. South africans didn't vote for Zuma they voted for the ANC this just shows how silly you are. The SA parliment and civil sociaties create policies in SA not Zuma. Hiv is a worldwide even in america. India has the second highest hiv population and one of the highest infection rates in the world but does the media report on this NO, and yet a Bleep like you wanna talk poo coming from your anus ignorant baffoon. I hope your children will be gay one day and then you can send them to SA cause we accept people for what they are and there what they contribute to sociaty not there intimate orientation. Get out of your TREE cause the world and africa you espire exist only in your unevolved baffoon brain. |

cheikh: snydergp My dear, I'm a black south african born in the 1980's and as a child I've seen what apartheid whites are capable of. I've been in war situations in DRC as as a UN peacekeeper and and I've even been shot at by rebbels. So don't tell me about not knowing the tragic and inhuman effects of war and no amount sweettalk can ever justify any human death especially if they don't have the means to defend themselfs. We will have our different views that is because of our experiences we have in dailly life. The amount of force SAPS used was accessive and I've said that before in my earlier comments, but for you to say that actions like these has taken place in new south africa before is totally wronge. I've seen police being killed by "criminals" where they were ambushed and shot and there firearms being used to to kill other innocent people as we speak. You can never tell to me that the new SAPS is just as bad as the old SAPS cause that's a lie. What I said was with the unions and the lack of training of SAPS members to handle situations like this did also contribute to the sad loss of life, eventhough I still think this was a once off. |

Olodostein: Ahhh, South Africa is a fundamentally flawed society. Atleast we in SA with our socalled "fake democracy" can still go to our "fake Courts" and force our "fake goverment" to provide for our poor and even sue them when they miss treat us something that's still a pipe dream for rest of Africa even in Nigeria. This "Fake Democracy" are and has provided those very poor striking mineworkers children free education something that most african goverments an Nigeria has never done for its citizens so just shut up and do your research before you can tell us in SA that we are fake. We have a lot of problems and will still have unemployement poverty for years to come but that doesn't mean that we haven't progressed since apartheid. Stop this african "black" mentality that we must always wait for a goverment to improve our lives. If the goverment don't build u a house go and buy or pickup old bricks and build a house yourself. Next you gone tell me that americans with all its riches who can't even get there 10million street dwellers of there streets has a better democratic goverment than we in africa please go suck on a lollypop |

Afro_Blue: too black too strong! Don't talk nonsense those miners earn $625 a month. no company even the US and Europe would double there employees salaries in one year its impossible. Most of you socalled educated Africans go to Europe and earn $400 a month working two jobs cleaning the whitemans toilets and picking up garbage from streets something that whites will never do in there country. Stop this generalisation. Malema is just another corrupt wanna be politician who prey on poor people. Does your BBC tell you that Malema who is a pro poor activist owns a $1,8 million house in a rich suburb in Johannesburg North no, Malema spends $100,000 on parties on his youth league friends paid for by poor taxpayers tell me did he invite any poor mine workers no. He's also under investigation from the NPA for his corrupt dealings in tenders to build roads I guess no one told you this to. I agree with Malema on to nationalize mines but as things stand currently only Malema and his BEE Tenderpreneurs crownies will benifit not the poor. |

snydergp: You've got a point,it is not ZUMA that must resign but the ANC as it is their policies that allows the imperialist to exploit the poor people. And ANC member cyril ramaphosa hold shares in this mine compony. So ANC have failed the people not zuma, what is zuma anyway. What influence he has as he is running south africa the way he's told by the business sector. |

Sagamite and snydergp are two confused desable people. africaunite:So Cyril Ramaphosa had shares in this company !!!!! You nailed it down here. Now we all understand why the mining compagny is being arrogant after slaughtering scores of miners, it gave monday August 20, 2012 as deadline for the employees to return to work or be fired. Can you imagine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Olodostein is 100 % right when he wrote: Olodostein: Ahhh, South Africa is a fundamentally flawed society. Mugabe would never stand idly while a mining company slaughters miners in zimbabwe, as you can see your DEMON-cracy is worse than what you wrongly call a dictatorship. @syndergp, you are probably the only one in the world who dismisses stereotype with stereotype. Who says we do not give free education to our citizens? I do not think, i stand to be corrected, there is any govt in the whole of the continent that has given free edu to as many people as the various levels of govt in nigeria. In some states, education is free at the primary and secondary level. you can imagine how many children there are. FYI, the nigerian govt gave free edu to your compatriots during the days of apartheid. Many of you were scatered all over our universities. We gave better jobs to your uni teachers who could not get jobs in the best unis in sa at the time. NB: the naija govt sponsors its citizens abroad to study what ever they feel like in any uni of their choice. So you can see all of our public fund is not stolen afterall! My advice to you is to do some research about naija before you come here next time so as not to embarrase yoursellf by claiming false exeptionality. And you are not exceptional in any way. |

Its not about stereotyping per say but its about knowing what's happening on the ground and what people exsperience in SA on a dailly bases. We got to be carefull on what we read or think is fact about what happened. Malema has an agenda and he's just an political oppotunist. When things like this happen tragic as it may be it has puts the spotlight on the very core of societal problems in SA and will change the way mining companies, unions, workers, police and goverment operate in future. My point is that people on this forum should stop to sensationalize death, opression and lawlessness in general and that we should look at a problem holisticly before we comment or spew sh.t and untruths that's all. Cheap politics and blame games never solves problems in society but our actions towards solving and prevention changes societies. A Judicial investigation has been set up to probe what happened and I have better faith in south africa's jugdes then I have in politicians. So untill we know the full facts all of us should refrain from making false aligations and general STEREOTYPING. To diagnose a problem without administrating a cure is useless especially when it comes to a diverse country like SA where we have first world policies and third world implimentation. |

@Panafrican are you talking abt the same Mugabe who is still in power for over 28years, a presendent who allows torchers opposition leaders who don't sing his prays. The same Mugabe who has over 3,5million of his citizens living in south africa the same Mugabe who took his country from who had africa's best education and health system to one of africa's wurse. The same Zimbabwe who was once one of only 6 african countries who could feed its people without any food imports and now imports almost everything from SA, the same Mugabe who went to Singapore for medical treatment while his people suffer die in his failed state hospitals. If you want that in south africa and africa as a whole then you must really be the most tragic mistake known to humanity, your a true definition of a Supreme First Class Village Clown trully one of a kind. Pffff!!! CNN and BBC propaganda. Zimbabwe is stable, this is a fact they cannot hide, moreover there is no "democratic" Nato bomb blowing up hospitals and residential buildings "by mistake " in Harare , Bulawayo or Lupane. Is Mugabe in power in Greece? This Country is in shambles. Does Mugabe manage the Euro currency ? No, still this currency is in big trouble. Is Mugabe in power in Iraq or Libya right now? No. The mainstream media are hiding zimbabwe successes under Mugabe because he hates promiscuous practices and he took back the stolen land. Do you know how many Indians ( from India) are abroad? do you know how many Chinese, kosovar albanians , French and British are abroad looking for jobs? the world today is a global village. You go where you want to be. Chinese are going to the united states while americans are going to china. Mexicans are fighting their way to Texas, Arizona, California in the U.S while americans are leaving those states to go to Mexico. Besides that what is wrong about being in power for 28 years? Some are in power for less than 5 years, and their government is shooting miners like deers. |

Cretins like these die and fight for the kinds of leaders we have in Africa, that have made Africa what it is today relative to the rest of the world. In an ideal world, fucktards should be eliminated when a chance occurs and should not have a right to an opinion, talkless of a vote. LOL... I think everybody in here should just take a deep breathe. Breath people, it is okay... it is not the end of the world yet:-) South Africans always manage to sort out their issues... they are no perfect, but they are trying to be different from the reso of Africa. It is difficult because they are treading on unknown ground.. it's like being on a journey and never knowing what awaits you around teh corner. No one has ever travelled this road so there is no point of reference. They are learning all the way. Nigeria is a country full of highly intelligent, educated people. They must just put aside their hatred for each other (Christians vs. Muslems) and learn to hold their leaders accountable. Zimbabwe is a beautiful country that is still full of potential. They are recovering steadly and hopefuly one day very soon they will all be able to return home (because we know they despite SA and everything it stands for). I can never understand why every discussion amongst Africans turns into a Country-bashing session. I woudl jus like to be a fly on the wall at these leadership meetings (AU, SADC, etc) to hear what really goes on :-) P.S I didn't know there weer so many South Africans on this forum..... |
