LONDON (AP) — Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu called Sunday for Tony Blair and George Bush to face prosecution at the International Criminal Court for their role in the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq

Tutu, the retired Anglican Church's archbishop of South Africa, wrote in an op-ed piece for The Observer newspaper that the ex-leaders of Britain and the United States should be made to "answer for their actions."

The Iraq war "has destabilized and polarized the world to a greater extent than any other conflict in history," wrote Tutu, who was awarded the Nobel prize in 1984.

"Those responsible for this suffering and loss of life should be treading the same path as some of their African and Asian peers who have been made to answer for their actions in the Hague," he added.

The Hague, Netherlands, based court is the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal and has been in operation for 10 years. So far it has launched prosecutions only in Africa, including in Sudan, Congo, Libya and Ivory Coast.

Tutu has long been a staunch critic of the Iraq war, while others opposed to the conflict — including playwright Harold Pinter — have previously called for Bush and Blair to face prosecution at the Hague.

"The then-leaders of the U.S. and U.K. fabricated the grounds to behave like playground bullies and drive us further apart. They have driven us to the edge of a precipice where we now stand — with the specter of Syria and Iran before us," said Tutu, who last week withdrew from a conference in South Africa due to Blair's presence at the event.

While the International Criminal Court can handle cases of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, it does not currently have the jurisdiction to prosecute crimes of aggression. Any potential prosecution over the Iraq war would likely come under the aggression category.

The U.S. is among nations which do not recognize the International Criminal Court.

In response to Tutu, Blair said he had great respect for the archbishop's work to tackle apartheid in South Africa, but accused him of repeating inaccurate criticisms of the Iraq war.

"To repeat the old canard that we lied about the intelligence is completely wrong as every single independent analysis of the evidence has shown," Blair said. "And to say that the fact that Saddam (deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein) massacred hundreds of thousands of his citizens is irrelevant to the morality of removing him is bizarre."

However, Blair said that "in a healthy democracy people can agree to disagree."

In Britain, a two-year long inquiry examining the buildup to the Iraq war and its conduct is yet to publish its final report. The panel took evidence from political leaders including Blair, military chiefs and intelligence officers. Two previous British studies into aspects of the war cleared Blair's government of wrongdoing.

The Iraq war was bitterly divisive in the U.K. and saw large public demonstrations. However, Blair subsequently won a 2005 national election, though with a reduced majority

The piper dictates the tune....there are blood thirsty forces governing international politics and Tutu should know better that Bush and Blair are PRINCIPALITIES as long as ICJ and UN is concerned...These men are memebers of the few elite who are untouchables...Tutu should even know that the more he speaks out the more he is closer as their next hit target....The New World Order has come to stay..bringing us closer to the end.

''Those terrorist'' included 1 million Iraqi men, women, and children who sat in their homes minding their business until US bombs arrived to slaughter them based on a pack of lies, correct? That is how you'll sit there brainless while these imperialists concoct all sorts of lies to own you.

Is that all you have to say? I bet an intelligent mind would have used the war of aggression case to counter Tutu's argument. It's there in the post. Learn to read before you make comments. You're better than the comment you made above.

I've already concluded there's nothing like international justice unless Bush & Blair get prosecuted for their crimes in Iraq.

The international criminal court in the hague was built for only people from third world countries especially in Africa and Asia. It also absolves friends of the US from facing persecution for crime against humanity. That's why people like Obasanjo who should have been hanged alongside Sadam Hussein are still walking free.
Re: Desmond Tutu: Bush & Blair Should Face Trial At The Hague by greaterlove(m): 5:05pm On Sep 03, 2012
I totally agree with Desmond Tutu, the war on iraq was really a dumb war, it was like using a bazooka to kill a mosquito. If america and britain do not tread on the path of reconciliation this polarization will keep on widening. Its good Obama has refused to be dragged into another war in iran but more still needs to be done.

Now the same US will collaborate with its allies to use the ICJ to harass and oppress African leaders while their own citizens cannot be brought the same court

You know the popular saying, might is right. America is the greatest threat to world peace now.
The model of government that works for them (democracy) doesn't necessarily work for others.
Arabs are stubborn people that need firm leaders. Authoritative as those deposed arabs leaders were, they kept there people in check and there was relative peace and stability in the region and decrease in terror groups then.
Afghanistan and Iraq has yet to be stable since america/NATO went there and there is not certainty of peace for many more years to come.
The so called arab spring revolution started in Iran after the second term victory of the sitting president (ahmedinjihad) but it was crushed and Iran accused CIA of sponsoring the unrest then. I doubt if there would be total peace and stability in libya, although Egypt seems to be doing well.
America should use their big brother status and might promote unity and be impartial. Even if saddam had weapon of mass destruction and Iran has nuclear weapon, there is no need for america to be worried if they are clean and maintained cordial and neutral relationship with them.

Mr Tutu is a credible figure & thus his position on dis case should b critically considered... The Western govt armed Sadam to commit all d crimes he commited... They only turned d table against him when he became defiant & they disguisley invaded in d name of Operation Iraqi Liberation(OIL)... Iraq will never surmount d problems Bush & Blair has caused dem cos there's been waves of bombimg since almost a decade.. Till today d West have not been able to justify their claims of invasion.. Mr. Tutu's have only expressed d minds of d world citizens by calling for d prosecution of Bush & Blair because they've damaged d middle-east & d world at large.
