'Innocence of Muslims' is a 2012 independent religious and political film.

The low-quality film was produced and directed by Sam Bacile, a 56 year-old real estate developer who identifies himself as an Israeli Jew.

According to Bacile, he produced the film to call attention to what he called the "hypocrisies" of Islam and it was screened in full just once, to a mostly empty movie theater in Hollywood.

The film has been promoted by Terry Jones. Media reporting of Jones' burning of Qurans previously led to deadly riots around the world.

Jones said on 11 September 2012 that he planned to show a 13-minute trailer that night at his church, the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida.

"It is an American production, not designed to attack Muslims but to show the destructive ideology of Islam," he said in a statement. "The movie further reveals in a satirical fashion the life of Muhammad"

In july 2012, a 14-minute excerpts from the English-language film was posted on YouTube. By September the movie has been dubbed into Arabic and was brought to the attention of the Arab-speaking world by a Coptic blogger.

Muslim leaders criticized the film's depiction of Muhammad. The Daily Telegraph reported that it portrayed Muhammad as an advocate of pedophilia and a homosexual, showing him having sex.

Reaction
The Arab version of the film led to a series of attacks on US embassies in the Arab World. The embassies in Cairo and Benghazi were both attached with the Benghazi attack resulting in the death of ambassador Christopher Stevens.

Bacile has gone into hiding fearing that current actions could be used as an excuse to harm him. He continues to defend the film. Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi urged the United States government on Tuesday to prosecute the 'madmen' behind the video."

The film allegedly triggered the September 11, 2012 storming of the United States Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, and a rocket attack on an embassy personnel car of the United States Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, resulting in at least four deaths of U.S. diplomatic personnel, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Murky background of film in question

The film at the centre of the protests in Libya and Egypt is called Innocence of Muslims and was apparently shot in the US.

The full version is said to run for two hours, but so far all most people have seen is a collection of extracts found on Facebook and Youtube - with one trailer running to 14 minutes.

That inevitably makes the storyline hard to follow. Early scenes are set in the modern world and appear to show Egyptian Coptic Christians suffering at the hands of militant Islamists.

The latter, highly amateurish part of the film is set in the past and appears to depict the Prophet Muhammad, played by a young American actor, as a philandering, womanising caricature.

But a more complex picture since emerged since the early analyses of the film as a crude anti-Islam diatribe. It now appears likely that all references to Islam in the dialogue were spoken not by the actors but were dubbed over in post-production.

It now appears possible that the actors did not know the film would eventually deal with such controversial subject matter - and did not themselves speak the lines that made the film the provocative and insulting production that most commentators agree it is.

Early reports concerning the identity of the filmmaker, too, have been hard to verify.

Filmmaker mystery

The film is crudely made, with cheap sets and wooden dialogue.

Though the film was shot in English, a version dubbed into Arabic also now exists.

The performers are not well-known actors and some appear to be amateurs. The film was shot on video, much of it clearly against green screen with the backgrounds dropped in afterwards.

Initial reports - including in this article - identified the producer of the film as Sam Bacile, "who describes himself as an Israeli real-estate developer living in the United States".

The Wall Street Journal reported he had made the film with $5m (£3m) raised from 100 Jewish donors. In a phone interview, Mr Bacile was said to have described Islam as a "cancer", and said the film was political and not religious.

But extensive efforts by BBC reporters to trace Mr Bacile - through his credentials as a filmmaker or a real-estate agent - have so far proved fruitless.

Israeli officials quoted anonymously by Associated Press have also said there is no record of an Israeli citizen of that name.

The Atlantic spoke to a man identified in multiple media reports as a consultant to the film, Steve Klein, who claimed that "Mr Bacile" was, in fact, not Israeli, probably not Jewish, and that the name was a pseudonym.

The only reference to Sam Bacile on the internet prior to last week was the Youtube user "sambacile" who posted the 14-minute trailer of the English version of the film at the beginning of July.

This user's account was set up on 4 April 2012, according to Youtube information.

After the trailer was posted on Youtube, it was then picked up by some Arab TV stations and talk shows.

On the religious Egyptian TV channel al-Nas, presenter Sheikh Khalid Abdallah included a few scenes from the trailer, dubbed into Arabic, on his talk show. A clip from the talk show including scenes from the trailer posted online has been viewed 300,000 times.

The film has already had explosive consequences including the death of the US ambassador to Libya.

But at present it appears that fundamental questions remain about who made the film and why.

toria1980: and i hope this topic wont cause any trouble for NLers o

Why should the topic cause trouble for NLers? Maybe the insinuations made in all this movies and cartoons are actually true and factual in the quran and hadith. that's why they (muslims) get angry when confronted with such stories. you know that kind of feeling, when your past hunts you but you just want to forget it. just thinking......... I've never seen a muslim try to explain to non muslims. the only thing you hear is behead him, behead her even the educated ones, but the cover their faces when making such claims because they know it is bad.

btw

Hundreds of brainwashed Muslims will start defending this heinous and devilish act on this forum now. There's nothing moral about killing of people for religious sake.

Ok, accepted, the Movie shouldn't have been made in the first place, but why not criticize or even ask for apology from the producer? Or don't we still have virgins in the world anymore that you so crave for that 70 virgins which your Allah promised you?

Religion is a cankerworm, not worth it. It makes you blind and deprive you of that true love that bond us together as people. It is a better to be an atheist than join a religion where killing is justified.

American embassy in Yemen is currently on attack. There's something missing and wrong with this sect. Can't Islam sort thing out by way of dialogue rather than violence?

Islam is a religion of depravity and murderous intent to non-muslims. Anyone claiming that it is a religion of peace is deluded. Basically, Muslim countries should be cut off from the greater international community and allowed to follow their own cultural mandates with no input, technology, culture, food, etc from outside of their own countries. Let them stew in their own religious idiocy.
