Dr young: i have always have issues with comparing one profession to the other. They all have their different department and are specialist in their various fields. I believe and i have learnt that the same way we have specialist in medicine so also in nursing and in physiotherapy. I do not know what you mean by nurses not being highly skilled: as in skilled in physio or medicine. You want them practising medicine or physio to show they are skilled. Let me say this, if they are not skilled they wouldn't be given charge of the ward for 24 hrs and to call us if things start getting weird. In US, most of them are even usurping the functions of family doctors , anaesthesiologist etc.
@ Olu,better go for medicine if you dont want somebody looking over your shoulder while you work. Medicine is not fulfilling for everybody, so if you feel you won't be fulfilled as a doctor then take up physio to doctorate level and lecture.

Of course they have specialties too, but does that mean a surgical nurse can perform surgery, or take care of the theatre by cleaning it, sterilizing instruments, etc...

And mind you, nurses are NOT in charge of the wards... The doctor is always in charge, that's why house officers are always there...

If you follow the current primary health care policy ,you will know about midwives scheme or whatever is it's name and it successes because of the skills they possess in managing obstetrics cases.
Let us young doctors get down from our high horse and know that without any of these participating professionals: pharmacists, nurses,midwives, Chews, lab scientist,physio to mention but a few, the diagnosis and management of our patient will be difficult.

In the lab for example, the head is still the doctor that specialized in hematology, chemical pathology, microbiology, etc.... If any test enters the lab, the lab scientist conducts it and sends the result to the doctor in charge, he checks for mistakes, errors, etc, when confirmed, he gives his diagnosis and sends to the clinic, the clinician sees the result and gives his clinical diagnosis, prescribes drugs and the nurses administer the drugs...


In essence, ONLY DOCTORS HAVE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY TO DIAGNOSE AND TREAT DISEASE, the nurses just act on the prescription of the drug treatment...

We diagnose and treat patient THAT IS CERTAIN, it is our duty and right. Maintaining a good interpersonal relationship between my co-workers and myself for efficient management of our common goal which is healthy patient is my ambition. We all have a role to play and i have to appreciate others who make an impact on the team. Cos it is a team which i am the HEAD.

You see, things don't work out the way it supposed to be.....

In my area too, there is a nurse that also owns a private hospital, also has a theatre, that's because he has trained under a doctor in a private hospital, acquired a lot of skills, and had enough money to establish on his own... But, can that ever work even in south africa, talkless of USA, canada, etc...

Where there is no law, we do what we like. In fact, this power tussle is what is affecting us in our school now. We can't write our clinicals today cos nurses are on strike... WHY? BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE PAID LIKE HOUSE OFFICERS!!!!

Nah CGPA ain't required, but at times, u wud really wish it was required. ♏ on a 4.82 GPA (first semester) yet ♏ not certain I will cross, its this semester's result that will determine.
Courses are grouped into Physicals, Chemicals and Biologicals, and a cumulative average of 50 is required in each group to cross to Idi-Araba. Just work hard and try to score as high as you can in each course as the grading system of A, B, C, D ...... Is pretty useless in our case. CONCENTRATE more on the physicals, that's where most students falter. Don't worry, you will be given orientation when u resume. You are free to ask me any question, hopefully, I'll be able to answer. Congrats on ur admission o, pop enough champagne o, its not easy

thanks, yeah we need to pop champagne,but dat will be sm oda tym.it wasn't easy at all to beat d cutoff,it went thru hell...thank God i made it thru dat rigorous admissn process even though it wz my first attempt at JAMB.as for the physicals,that won't be any problem by God's grace.ur CGPA of 4.82 is totally impresive,i'm sure u'll cross over nxt semester.

parkinson disease from the little av learnt...it is an inborn error of metabolism owing to the dopamine produce by the substangial negra of the brain not equalising the acetylcholine at the muscle end plates....hence the individual have motor movement problem....*i heard una 1st lady get am*....atelactasis or patchy atelactasis...what i know is dat it is the collapse of the lungs owing to the alveoli type 2 cells unable to produce surfactant which prevents the alveoli from collapsing....beractant can be administered to help a little....i think dat is the little i know from medical biochemistry and resipatroy physiology...sorry i dont know much am stimm in pre-clinicals...EBSU CHS...

Yeah, admission process in Unilag is always rigorous, you guys were even lucky, the cut-off was 76 during my time. I thank God I made it though. Lol, Amen and amen by God's grace. Yap, dat's correct!!! Thnks. Do u also know that most babies born prematurely are at risk of being deficient in surfactant.because it is produced in d foetus at abt 23 wks old and therefore premature babies suffer from high surface tension in d alveoli.
