President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday night brought bright smiles on the faces of Nigerian sportsmen as he hosted the victorious Nigerian Reps to the 2012 London Paralympic Games at the presidential Villa, Aso Rock, Abuja. During the event, the president announced a cash prize award of N5 million, N3million and N2 million to each of Nigeria's Paralympic Gold, Silver and Bronze winners respectively.

He also announced the conferment of the national honor of Member of the Order of The Niger, MON, on the six gold medal winning Paralympians.

“You represented our country to the best of your ability, we thank you,” Jonathan told the Paralympians and footballers at a reception hosted for the two contingents.

The physically-challenged athletes won a total of 13 medals, including six gold at the London Paralympics, placing Nigeria 22nd on the medals table and third best in Africa after Tunisia and South Africa.

The female football team, the Falconets, battled to become world fourth best at the U-20 World Cup in Japan.

Jonathan announced the different cash gifts for the athletes at a reception held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa on Saturday night.

Team Nigeria contingent to the London Paralympics was made up of 29 athletes who participated in just four sports.

The Team swept many medals in the powerlifting event with at least four Nigerian athletes, Yakubu Adesokan, Esther Oyema, Joy Onaolapo and Folashade Oluwafemiayo not only winning gold medals but also setting new world records.

The President announced what he called a token cash gift of N1 million for each member of the Under 20 female football team popularly known as Falconets while noting that though they did not win the championship, they gave Nigeria good representation from the qualification stages and during the tournament.

The Coaches and other officials of the football team were awarded N1.2 million each by the President.

For the Paralympians, President Jonathan announced a cash gift of N500,000 each for non medalist in the team, while Bronze medal winners will receive N2 million each.

Silver and Gold medal winners were given cash award of N3 million and N5 million respectively while the coaches and officials of the Paralympian team will also receive N2.5 million each.

In addition the gold medal winners will also be conferred with national honour of MON at the National Award ceremony scheduled for Monday.

The President who lamented the poor performance of Nigeria’s team to the 2012 London Olympics who failed to win any medal said the situation must not be repeated.

The President therefore asked the private sector and each states of the federation to join in the battle to develop potential medal winners at the next Olympic for Nigeria. The President said he will soon convene a national retreat that will address critical issues in Nigeria Sports.

Nice one! Especially the part that he will soon convene a national retreat that will address critical issues in Nigeria Sports....

After watching american movies and seeing how they inculcate sports into their daily family lives and school curiculum I think nigeria has a lot to learn...we should build at least one sports court or pitch in almost every street in nigeria! There are open spaces available and if need be people houses should be bought by govt and converted to an open space for sports....just like redeem church is in almost every street in lagos.

When these streets sports become popular, believe me individuals or coporate bodies will rush to sponsor them cause it will present them traffic audience to promote their products or services, cause when I come back from work I can decide to walk down to d sports court to watch a game which can be played both day and night, providing me a place to go and relax and be entertained....and these street sponsored tournements will grow from community/area to local goverment to state to national tournements, and you can imagine the talents that will be produced for national teams and individual sports from there...this should also be done in schools...I think every growing child should have one extra curiculum activity to be doing while schooling e.g sports music, art, acting, comedy, dancing etc, cause God has inputed at least one talent in everybody.

And why is nigeria lottery industry money not being used by govt to grow our sports All those baba ijebu and coporate bodies promos taxes should go to sports, Cause I knw billions of naira can be gotten from there.

please the government should stop this attitude of giving cash rewards to our athletes,no country in the world does this, even the spanish team that won the euros and the world cup were not given cash prizes by their government.

Haba, N5m (less than 20,000 GBP) cant even buy a disabled access vehicle. Why do we continue to insult these good men and women who flew the flag and did us proud as billions watched world-wide? Meanwhile, our information ministry will gladly pay millions of dollars for a 30 second CNN clip on "Nigeria, good people, good nation" story. The Gold winners deserve disabled access vehicles and N20m cash in 5,000 naira notes please. wink

Below For Your Information Sir (source is Reuters but you can google it)

The Spain captain, Iker Casillas, has hit back at criticism over the cash bonus each player will be paid if the European champions win the World Cup in South Africa.

Reports in Spain suggest Casillas and his team-mates will each get €600,000 (almost £500,000) should they win Spain's first World Cup, the largest bonus among major contenders.

A spokeswoman for the Spanish football federation would not confirm the amount, which was negotiated with the federation by Casillas and his two vice-captains, Xavi and Carles Puyol.

I apologise to you my "superior" for even attempting to post an opinion on the matter when custodians of knowledge such as yourself are on this forum. But rather than insult sir, why dont you deliver a superior argument or position? But perharps you are more comfortable with raining insults on a Sunday evening?

in as much as we like to reward people that perform well,it would also be counter productive to make their reward a one-off investment.paralympians have the ability to attend up to 5 games during their careers.by rewarding them this time, they'd work harder in Rio to win more medals.but to expect the government to literarily pay them off is to expect them to get lackaidasical towards the next games.
