The federal government plans to scrap several government agencies next year, the 2013-2015 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) sent to the National Assembly by President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed.

The document shows that government will also rationalise a large number of agencies next year in line with the recommendations of the Steve Oronsaye-led committee.

"The reduction in size of government will be achieved through stricter rationalisation of available resources including sustaining the reduction of overhead votes. The figure for overhead decreased from N536bn in 2010 to N266bn in 2012. It is expected to further decrease in 2013 to N230bn or 4.6 percent of total expenditure," the document read.

Government has also set the cost of crude at $75 per barrel as President Jonathan promised that the 2013 budget would be a continuation of his fiscal consolidation.

The government also noted that following its initiatives and in line with the trend since 2011, the share of recurrent spending in aggregate expenditure would further reduce from 71.47% in 2012 to 68.7% in 2013; while capital expenditure as a share of aggregate spending would increase from 28.53% in 2012 to 31.3% in 2013.

According to the paper, the government will streamline the management of the subsidy scheme through the strengthening of the audit and verification process, adding that these will yield results in 2013, just as the SURE-P instrument will continue to be used as an intervention window to mitigate the impact of the partial subsidy removal.

"The government has also introduced the integrated financial management information system to make the process of budget preparation and execution more efficient and transparent," the paper added.

Not a bad idea. Plus it'll also be a smart move if they'll scrap one of those two chambers of the law makers.
May be instead of removing subsidy on petrol, it would have been more reasonable to reduce the amount spent in running of agencies and the senate.
Make the presidency seat, House of Rep, a no profit making post, cut the allowances by 50%, make the rich pay more tax, subsidize education, transportation and agriculture for the poor. Then we'll know they have the people they're governing in mind.

If you look at the Govt agencies and parastatals, you fine unnecessary duplication; two agencies performing the same responsibilities and so on. This move should be greeted with commendation. Atleast the country will have more fund for capital projects.

There was so much duplicity in the system. I guess Nigeria's past Presidents were merely fooling around on the job, creating a lot of mess and leaving every mess to be cleaned up by GEJ's administration. So much more to be done before 2019.

Agreed, Public servants such as ministers and senators have no business earning more than N500k per month. With such "unattractive" salaries, our politics will start diverging from its current "do or die" and rigging trajectory to one of selflessness and transparency. Individuals and corporations that earn more than N100m should be taxed at 40-50%.

Some pple are talking as if our problem is lack of fund to execute capital projects. There is virtually no project Nigeria cannot embark on if we have the political will to do so. Scraping agencies/parastatals is just a way to make more money available for our leaders to embezzle. We have the cash and other resources any country can dream of. If we take cognizance of the trade-off (unemployment effect) of such policy, we will realize that it is better to leave those agencies in order not to escalate the high level of unemployment in the country. There is no guarantee that money saved from this policy will be channeled towards developmental projects, instead of widening the already large gap between the rich and the poor.

GEJ promised to cut down govt cost of spending after the january protest but went on to create new offices like appointing an s.a on public affairs(Okupe) when he already has one on media(Abati).Rather than creating more unemployment by scrapping agencies,he should start by reducing his special adviser's,special assistant's,ministers etc and make existing agencies more efficient.

Gbam!!!
I had argued with friends a while back that nigeria can run on 5-6 ministries and she would not collapse. All we see @ the parastatals and agencies are basic expressions of waste. I argued then and still argue now that all we need to do is merge some mins together and turn others into depts. Why cant the ministry of interior... Be under d min of defence as a dept? Why must min of sport be diff from youth and women affairs? Why should productivity be outside min of power? Why shld min of raw minerals be outside agric? It goes on and on. The staff in these mins need not be sacked, no, prudent evaluation of the staff strength will reveal ghost workers and over aged staff and they should be dealt with appropriately. If this is done, then this govt would have achieved a milestone and would deserve my kudos though i will grudgingly give it. It should not be the transformation agenda but part of it. Keeping my fingers crossed.
