ChinenyeN:
400. This is where traditional count stops, before million, billion etc. became recently introduced.

Not necessarily, the word for a thousand billion now (Ijeri, Ijeli) comes from the same word meaning eight thousand.

. . . And what's "uma" ? Half?

I think 250 is ofu Akpa ego na uma/okala.

But then there's "uma ato, uma ise etc"

Is uma half?

1. You mean ijeri is traditionally eight thousand?
2. Which area/group did it originate?

lol It's funny how Igbo just took over this thread. It's as if other groups don't know their own numerals.

I know uma as 'surplus'/'remainder', like in math.

I think Igbo people have become the most enthusiastic about language because of all the somewhat justified paranoia.

In Aro, 40 is ivu abuo. "Forty something" is "ivu abuo na uma". Uma means remainder/change.

Nnu as 40 is just odd to me. Imagine if you visited some market in the Ngwa-Ikwerre axis and requested for "nnu ji", only for the trader to attempt to get you to pay for 400 yams. grin

What is the Efik word for "children?" I spent 1955-1960 in Nigeria (Abak & Ikot Usen). Thank you!

Are you a copywriter, proofreader, interpreter, teacher, student or just someone who works in Yorùbá Language?

Translate those figures and numbers to words in standard Yoruba Language at YorubaNumeral.com at no cost.

It also aids learning the yoruba numbering system by providing detailed explanation for each number translated up to 25 billion.

You all should check this site out YorubaNumeral.com

Just input your desired number and get the translation immediately.

Saves you a lot effort especially if you need to do this frequently
