UK Or US: Your Preference And Why? by phoneman(m): 4:45am On Apr 14, 2006
It has come to my attention that a lot of nigrns in the UK would love to be in the US. I bring this topic up because I was thinking of relocating to the UK because there is a greater nigerian concentration (I'm fibbing I know there are more nigerian women ohh wink). I go there once in a while besides the annoying posh accent its all good. Oh before i forget I heard UK taxes are outrageous. US is typically between 28-35%. Speak to me.

It depends on what you looking for. If its for education (university education is not as expensive as the states), health system, greater concentration of nigerians to help you start afresh i think the UK is a better place to be but in terms of jobs, cost of living USA is better.

I've been in the UK for nine years now, well i like it but interms of jobs finding i think its harder maybe because of the course i'm studying in university. So as for me i'll prefere to be in the state to locate a well paid job then again the competition. Anyway sha i'll rather be in Nigeria.

I love it here in the US. Do not like the UK system of government, healthcare system nor the cost of living. To be honest, i do not know why anyone would want to live in the UK. I would rather live in SA than in the UK anyday. Everything is so bloody expensive and yet Africans are begging for asylum. Beyond my comprehension! And plus there are too many Arabs in Birmingham and London for my liking, i cannot live with people who blow $hit up in the name of Allah. Call me racist, i do not care. That is the 411.Dare i talk about the stingy Indians and Paki's. You guys are bold.

Uk any day, any time. Transport system, security, social life, Education, Health care, etc are far better in the UK than in the US.

I prefer the UK (more Nigerians, lovely British people and I would die for the british accent grin: it shows that you are sort of more "educated" and intelligent; American English: just 500 words and that´s it, in order to get along in the US). I deplore the weather in the UK, but I love London for its cosmopolitan touch. (why has someone be so insulting towards the Arabs and Indians) angry this is not nice, ooo angry sad

Moreover, why do Nigerians only know two destinations in the world? Always UK and US. Man, the world has more to offer and explore. grin

I have Lived in both and you guys can have the UK. Healthcare with waiting list is better than HMO or PPO? Wow you guys are something. Better social life, better education? Please! You guys know better. Has any of you visited the US? The UK is an American wannabe.Someone said Transport system is better, we drive here God dammit! You have to be on a train or bus everyday and then here comes the bombers. The USA has more than 6,000 Universities and has the world's best colleges. Big Homes, big cars, massive freeways, huge malls, Amusement parks, casinos, sports stadiums everywhere, relatively low taxes. Best of all as long as you are born here you become an instant US citizen, regardless of where your parents are from.

All the good shows in the UK are American, everything the US does, the UK wants to copy. I will let you guys have the UK and dwell in that moshpit. Please!!
Re: UK Or US: Your Preference And Why? by LoverBwoy(m): 5:15pm On May 26, 2006
why u typing with hatred?  grin

there are no bombers in america not at all
not everybody wants to be a citizen of the country u know, as long as you've got stay ur okay- [sub]thats my own way of seeing it anyway[/sub]
u must have been watchin too much news to talk about the waiting list - its hype if u need operation u will get it if u need hip replacement u have to wait  grin

transport system, i don't really care as long as i can get to where iwant and plus the country is very small and very environmentally conscious so everyone is encouraged to use public transport thats why billions is spent to improve n maintain it.

big homes, big cars, massive freeway- why will u make comparison with the uk on these? have u seen the size of this island?  grin  grin  grin theres basically no point

No hatred here bro. I have lived there long, long time ago.And i do not regret my move. Plus too many Camera's (CCTV) everywhere. Too many Arabs/Muslims. Life is hard there and i am went back recently and wandered how people survive there. But i must say i do "Hate" the whole Monarchy Bull$hit".
Re: UK Or US: Your Preference And Why? by babwilms(m): 5:59pm On May 26, 2006
I don't think their are too many arabs. Infact they are not arabs, they are indians, pakistans, bangledesh you are calling arabs. People often get the missed together. I think you should be saying too much Nigerians in London.

But i still believe UK is still the best place to be, the degree is well recognised all over the world compare to the USA. The health system is good. The only thing i hate about the UK is the struggle to get on the property ladder and the cost of living.

Dude

As far as i am concern i see Arabs in London, Iranians, Iraqi's,Saudi's,Paki's and all those with long beards and wearing that white dress and a rag on their head. They are all over London and they run the stores, newspaper stands and are mostly British citizens . I do not care whether they are Sikh,Muslim,Buddist ETC. All i know is they are too many in the UK and they are more loyal to their home than the UK. That is why they blow $hit up and continue protest with hate filled speeches and sermons. People like the one eyed cleric, and his followers. That mess would not fly here.

Not to talk of the cost of Living, 2gig Ipod in the US is $149, the same Ipod in London is 150GBP. Like i said Nigerians run there i guess because they do not have a choice. If you have a choice and you are still there, more power to you.

Simple scientific experiments to answer the question:

1) Go to US embassy on a typical day and see those standing in line wanting to emigrate to the US. Then go check out line at UK embassy

2) Where do most Britons do their shopping, especially for electronics and clothes. Y? The good old US of A. I have worked with a few. They all say the same thing - Cost of living is high as hell in the UK.

3) Would you rather be in a country where, as I understand it (if I am wrong, let me know please), you may have to wait in line to be treated for even the most common of diseases because its run by the government OR would you rather have the option of being able to be treated regardless of who you are and how minor your condition may be?

4) Would you rather have most of your money "stolen" from you in the name of social services that you may not even use (such people usually get sucked in to believing that their education and health etc are "free"wink OR would you rather live in a system where you get most of your money back for you to spend as you choose?

5) Would you rather be in an environment where some people get by just because of their "blood" or in an environment where regardless of where you came from in life, you at least have the opportunity to succeed?

Very interesting question for which I expect very interesting answers grin

Note: Some people here will answer one way or the other based on emotions and indoctrination, not because they are willing to reason and be unbiased in their opinions. Let the flaming being wink
Re: UK Or US: Your Preference And Why? by Constantin: 7:27pm On May 26, 2006
Old Glory, Well I am perfectly comfortable with the UK. I like the British, their way of life, their culture, London and yes even their food at times. All is quaint and full of history here in England. Ask rich Americans where they want to live? They will all say UK or Côte d´Azur in France. Europe is full of security and history and it is very compact. Highways in US are just around the big cities, in UK, France or Germany you have got multi-lane highways where you can easily drive around. american roads outside the big cities are awfully pot-holed and people are by and large so ignorant. They still think that there is a bridge which connects London and New York (Nigerians in the UK poke a lot of fun of Americans, you know grin)
In England you have got nice and trendy bars, fancy little shops and you can walk carelessly around town with your girlfriend or some relatives without the fear of being brutally knocked down or your purse being greedily snatched off by hungry people that fall through the American safety net. In America you just have the have and the have nots, nothing in between. It is almost like Nigeria!
I love the UK which is my second home and I would not exchange it for anything in the world (but Nigeria, of course), and certainly not for the US. grin grin grin grin grin

Constantin, I would probably rethink this line. It is totally stereotypical. Where did you go in the US? I don't say so cos I am in the US myself. I am actually being very very neutral. cheesy
Re: UK Or US: Your Preference And Why? by OldGlory1(m): 7:57pm On May 26, 2006
Constantin

Have you been to the US BEFORE? Or you are telling me what you see on TV? Trendy bars? Please!! Miami, NYC,Vegas,LA,Boston,Washington DC, Seattle. They Brits come here to buy stuff and move here at record rates. The reverse is not happening. Constantin i like you bro, but you have to be off today bro. You are comparing the US to Nigeria? Please rethink your statement, it just screams ignorance". That cannot even be an opinion.

@My 2 cents

You are damn right. Look at the embassies in NYC or DC and there is no one there, look at the US embassy in London and there is always a long waiting period.

@constantin which place did u go to in the U.S? is peckham part of the description of the typical u.k. scene. so does u.s have places like peckham too doesnt mean its bad. i've been travelling to u.k all my life but i have never wanted to school there or live there (i love u.k. regardless but prefer the u.s.). the houses are just too cramped up, expensive living expenses, and although i've never been discriminated there but i've heard too much stories. i'm in the u.s right now, and i prefer it. if your talking about social life, schooling and what not u'll find everything here like they have in the u.k pluz much more. if i had a lot of money to burn i would definitely want to live in one of the fashion capital of the world (u.k.) but i feel its better as a tourist attraction and a vacation spot rather than a place to spend a lot of valuable time in. (MY OWN OPINION BY THE WAY AND NOT A FACT).
Re: UK Or US: Your Preference And Why? by OldGlory1(m): 8:22pm On May 26, 2006
@Baby4u2

Mine is a fact! Too many damn Arabs, too expensive, too damn tight, welfare society, police look like wimps, too many Nigerians, too many pick pockets in London. Right hand driving is a fraud. The government system is a joke. When we sneeze here in the US, the UK catches pneumonia. Please even Blair does not have a mind of his own. He foolishly followed Bush into Iraq and now Labour is in trouble. Hey baby by the way are your twins real? If so Nice ones!! wink

Topic

It is a simple choice. Small cramped welfare state vs Large and free market society. This is from someone who have Lived in both countries. The UK as a whole SUCKS bigtime. And while you are it, throw in Scotland,Wales, Ireland in there for me . And for the record the Queen is a LovePeddler. The Monarchy is a damn fraud to keep you all in check. And the Taxes are just straight up inhumane.
Re: UK Or US: Your Preference And Why? by desiree(f): 8:27pm On May 26, 2006
It's very difficult to compare between the UK and the US but if i have to choose again i will choose the UK anytime any day. This is the only place where you get free and quality education, free(but not so quality) health care,  get to meet polite and decent people, very little occurrence  drive-by shootings and not as many overweight people grin grin.

Although it is expensive to live here compared to the states but who care as long as you earn a decent income and have a good quality of life---I won't give that up for anything else in the world.
Re: UK Or US: Your Preference And Why? by desiree(f): 8:33pm On May 26, 2006

Try to be objective and constructive and there is no need to bring racism into it. You can say the same for the states too many Mexicans, and Latinos, surely that doesn’t take anything away from the benefits you get from living where ever you live!!!!!
Re: UK Or US: Your Preference And Why? by my2cents(m): 8:36pm On May 26, 2006
This is the only place where you get free and quality education, free(but not so quality) health care,

I have said it before and I will say it again - those things are not free. You are paying for it through taxes. Taxes come out of your paycheck. As you said, the health care system isnt "so quality". Thatz because it is run by government. So there is no motivation to innovate, and therez a lot of red tape. If you let the free markets rule, (ideally) competition sets in to reduce prices and with many companies comes many people innovating to attract customers.

Please, please people: refrain from the word "free" with respect to social services. I know that such governments have succeeded in indoctrinating their citizens to that effect but IT IS NOT FREE (sorry for the caps, but it is true grin). The government is implicitly sticking a gun to your head and saying "your freedom (as in, you could go to jail) or your money!!".
Re: UK Or US: Your Preference And Why? by desiree(f): 8:44pm On May 26, 2006
You pay taxes in the US too, Don't you

I know people that haven't worked one day in their entire life and still get free health care for themself and their family. Just shows how humane the UK is, people don't die if they don't have health insurance.
Re: UK Or US: Your Preference And Why? by IykeD1(m): 8:46pm On May 26, 2006
OldGlory,

No offense, but I have come to notice that you represent America even more than the president himself!
Good for you. Have you really sat down to calculate the true amount or percentage of taxes you pay, I
may be wrong but I think we may only enjoy a marginal benefit here, not much after you have factored
in property taxes (School District tax, MUD or LUD tax, County Tax, City Tax), and Sales Tax.

I have only been to the UK once but have met and worked with a lot of them here in the US. Thus, my
comment will be based solely on my readings and interractions.

My2Cents,

You may want to recheck your scientific experimental questions, especially 3, 4, and 5. Last time I checked,
if you walk into any doctor's office or hospital here in the US, the first question you will be asked is "do you
have insurance?" If your answer is NO, chances are you will be waiting in that same line for a long time too,
maybe just as long as your UK counterpart.

I may be wrong, but you sound a bit like a Republican to me, what with all the talk about you getting the
most of your money back before you spend it? Are you advocating for a system whereby those that doesn't
have much are left to their own devices, you know, pulling yourself by the bootstrap kind of talk? I hope not.

Common now My2Cents, you honestly think our current leader got to where he is today based on hardwork,
no blue blood privileges or connections?

The way I see it, every place has its strenght and weaknesses. America is great on certain things - emphasis
is more on what the individual can do for self. It works great if everything is going well for you. Of course, in that
case, why would you want to trade places? I believe the UK tend to focus more on trying to achieve a more
equitable society, at least in its attempt to cater to the greater good of the masses, hence the universal health
care approach and the likes. That also has its drawbacks due to government inefficiencies. Now, if you are on
the lower income bracket, it makes no sense to trade places with America.

There was a recent study that claimed that older people in the UK are generally healthier than their American
counterparts? I wonder what similar study will say for younger people (30s thru 40s), but I will suspect that
the reverse might be the case.

Back to the original question, US or UK? I will take US any time, but rest assured that my experience will be
different from yours. You may or may not like it!
