There may not be hiding place for politicians with fake certificates anymore as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has post online the results of all its candidates between 1980 and 2012 for public verification.

The Head of National Office, WAEC, Dr Iyi Uwadiae, disclosed this during the official presentation of WAEC online results verification portal in Lagos on Tuesday.

According to him, the new development will enable members of the public, governments, institutions of higher learning, embassies and employers of labour to check and verify the results of candidates, who took the council’s examinations, including politicians from May/June 1980 to date.

He further said that members of the public would no longer have to undergo the stress of physically visiting the council’s offices to verify their results.

“This is no doubt a very significant development for WAEC and good news for thousands of Nigerians who patronise its services. Apart from providing governments, businesses and the citizens access to better information to make well-informed decisions, it also enables more efficient processes and greater accountability,” he said.

Presenting the portal, the Minister of State for Education, Chief Ezenwo Nyesom, said that the Federal Government had no option than to support the idea as one of the ways to curb corruption and strengthen the integrity of the examination body.

“I want to assure Nigerians that the Federal Ministry of Education is even more concerned and is doing all that is needed in collaboration with the state governments and relevant stakeholders to ensure sustainable improvement,” he said.

On the state of education in the country, Nyesom said that a lot still needed to done through the collective efforts of all stakeholders to improve the quality of teaching and learning in secondary schools.

was satisfied with the rapid transformation and increasing accessibility and affordability of the results of leaders to Nigerians.

According to him, this will enhance economic opportunities and utilisation of ICT solutions and e-services by both the public and private sectors to improve service delivery.

“I have no doubt that the effective operation of this e-portal will allow for better and efficient access to WAEC’s secure database through which candidates results can easily be checked and verified for authenticity,” he said.
