According to statistics from the African Insurance Organization, Nigeria is now the kidnap for ransom capital of the world.

The AIO said Nigeria accounted for 25% of global kidnappings in the last one year.

The revelation was made in Balaclava, Mauritius, at the 18th African reinsurance Forum which was well attended by delegates from across Africa and other continents.

The report said, “The number of kidnaps for ransom in Africa continued to increase. In the first half of 2011, Africa’s proportion of the global total increased from 23 per cent in 2010 to 34 per cent. Nigeria is now the kidnap for ransom capital of the world, accounting for a quarter of globally reported cases.”

The organization said that the development had led to increased business for terrorism and kidnap insurance.

he spate of kidnappings in Nigeria has once again given the country an embarrassing reputation. Over the past few years, reported cases of kidnapping in the country has risen, with many cases remaining unsolved. In some instances, the victims are never found and the culprits are never apprehended.

The African Insurance Organisation (AIO), a non-governmental organization recognized by many governments has said that Nigeria accounts for a quarter of kidnap for ransom cases reported worldwide in the last one year.

The AIO disclosed in its newsletter at the 18th African Reinsurance Forum in Mauritius yesterday that Nigeria had been designated as the global capital for kidnap for ransom due to the huge record of kidnap cases reported in the country yearly.

In the report made available to Punch, the AIO stated, “The number of kidnaps for ransom in Africa continued to increase. In the first half of 2011, Africa’s proportion of the global total increased from 23 per cent in 2010 to 34 per cent. Nigeria is now the kidnap for ransom capital of the world, accounting for a quarter of globally reported cases.”

It further stated that kidnap and ransom insurance constituted the illegal taking and holding captive of an insured person and was triggered under the policy by a financial demand as a condition of the release of the captive.

Hmm.
So now they don't take the heads and privates anymore. They take and hold them for ransom.
Slight improvement, at least more people get to return in one piece. undecided

Everytime some useless group comes up with phoney stats to discredit Nigeria just to gain cheap popularity. Since when did Nigeria overtake Mexico and Colombia in kidnapping and ransom taking when everyone knows that the drug cartels and rebel movements like FARC in COlombia fund their insurgencies and operations with the money made from kidnappings?

I just don't understand this!

U don't need a crystal ball to confirm our now acclaimed status. I saw it coming! A high number of graduates are unemployed and even a greater number of illiterate youths are roaming the streets. Kidnaping is now the most lucrative and sought-after course in the "university" of criminals. This is bullsh*t! Mexico is number 1 , followed by Colombia, and then its Guatamela. In mexico, out of 10 people kidnapped, 7 does not come out the same(human). They either cut a finger or one of the body parts are missing or the victim might face some severe beatings for them to show to their client that they are very serious and can carry out anything upon the victim. This is how it all started for the gangs in the latin regions before they go into the drug business. Its all starts from kidnapping and extortion. I don't believe that article displayed by the OP.

Believe it or not, quite a lot are now being kidnapped regularly especially for ransom.
So many small scale kidnapping acts go under the radar that it is not reported. A friend's mum got kidnapped and not a whim was heard on national media. A heavy ransom was paid out to secure her release.

Least Mexico's linked to the drug war while Colombia is linked to FARC. What's Nigeria's link, pray tell?

It would be instructive to see data that examines the various categories of kidnapping cartels at work in Nigeria. We know that kidnappers require victims for four broad commercial applications which often overlap.

1. The first end-use of kidnap victims is as unwilling donors of human spare-parts that are traded amongst Nigeria's vast underground network of Juju/Voodoo practitioners.

2. The second category of kidnappers open up their victims to extract vital organs, such as hearts, lungs, kidneys, eye-corneas and bone marrow, that fetch top dollar in the shadowy underworld of fresh-frozen human organs air-freighted globally in beer coolers for medical transplant into living hospital patients on waiting lists.

3. The third category of kidnapper prefers their clients alive and in one physical piece, with the expectation that cash ransoms paid by wealthy relatives would exceed the spare-parts value of such captives. Randsom kidnappers do, on occasion, go ahead and part out their victims for retail human organ sales, even after ransoms have been paid, thus maximizing profit from two income streams.

4. Kidnapping for the sex trade is the fourth and final subsidiary of the Nigerian abduction industry, and, like the kidnapping for ransom trade, requires captives to be kept alive.

Kindappers in the house, please let us hear some of your insider summations about this emergent new enterprise on the Nigerian economic landscape.
