Passengers Exchange Blows In Moving Airplane by Truequest(m): 11:00am On Jan 23, 2008
In what could be described as total absurdity, two passengers threw decorum to the wind and exchanged blows as a Lagos-bound Chanchangi aircraft was taxing to take-off from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The incident, which shook occupants of the aircraft to their marrows occured on Tuesday afternoon at the Abuja airport runway.

Daily Sun learnt that trouble started when the cabin crew and the pilot announced as the aircraft was on the verge of taxiing that all mobile phones be switched off as it is the standard practice globally. Rather than obey, a passenger was said to be engrossed in a phone call, totally ignoring the safety instructions from the cockpit.

As he spoke wildly over the phone, a cabin crew member beckoned on him to switch off as the electromagnetic emissions from the phone interferes with aircraft navigational signals. Yet, he ignored the instruction a second time.
Rather, what he did was to throw abusive words at the crew.
At this time, another passenger sitting close to him was said to have been miffed by the development and ordered the errant caller to shut up. The caller was said to have faced his fellow passenger and rained curses on him.

Within seconds, the verbal warnings snowballed into fisticuffs as both passengers threw heavy punches at each other. At this time, the aircraft was said to have approached the holding point from where the pilot ordered that they disembark the aircraft.

Expectedly, the pilots called for the immediate arrest of the duo who became unwilling guests of policemen stationed at the airport. Media officer of the Chanchangi Airlines, Adamu Ibrahim who confirmed the story on phone expressed happiness that the fighting men were handed over to relevant authorities.

“It actually happened just when they were taxing, the noise from the passengers were too much she insulted the crew member, the pilot had to stop and they left the aircraft for safety of the flight. The flight later left Abuja without them”, he said. Also commenting on the development, the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr. Harold Demuren described the situation as unrully, pointing out that if such incidents were not strongly handled they could lead to forceful openining of the exit doors thereby casing a big disaster.

“It is very dangerous, it could interfere with safety. It is an unrully behaviour and this is one of the distruption of services we have been saying in aviation. It could lead to forceful openining of the exit doors and that could amount to a big disaster,” he said.

9ja generally lack mobile phone usage etiquettes! You can imagine despite the instruction given and considering the history of consistent plane crashed that had occiured in the past some foolish devil possesed human being could still be doing it!I feel they should first of all take him to an assylum home and lock him for 1 year to see if the culprit is mentally sound! but for real,I wont call that ignorance oooo, cause he had been infoprmed just trying to dare soem things and risking other people's lives! 9ja God go help this country ooooo! He should be flogged and then made to pay a huge fine he will never be able to pay thereby making to be locked up in mental home! grin grin grin grin grin Apani yan alai ni ironu ni man naa sha!
Re: Passengers Exchange Blows In Moving Airplane by uspry1(f): 4:44pm On Jan 23, 2008
I heard that before many times from media and it does happen to everywhere around the world on every airport.

All airlines---both domestic and international has rules where passenger is disrespect breaking the rules or unruly behavior toward crew, strewdresses or other passenger that WILL BE THROWN OFF his/her reserved plane seat before plane depart!! PERIOD!!!!

Even during flight on the air, it happens, then it will stop NEXT the nearest airport to THROW disrespected/unruly behavior PASSENGER OFF the plane. PERIOD!!!

Totally unacceptable!
Re: Passengers Exchange Blows In Moving Airplane by aysometin(f): 5:09pm On Jan 23, 2008
Nigerians behave like that everywere, very disobedient and noisy. On the plane i took from France to Nigeria recently, i was ashamed at what Nigerians were doing.
I mean why should it be so difficult to obey rules that are for your own good, na wa!!!!!!!!!!1

Oh well I once heard a story similar to this one. Both of them were whisked off to the police station in Heathrow upon landing.

Crazy heads.
Re: Passengers Exchange Blows In Moving Airplane by mahal(m): 7:39pm On Jan 23, 2008
The warning thing is just a precaution, cuz if using cellphones aboard an aircraft could cause a crash, no one would be allowed to board a plane with it. it would be controlled like guns, drugs etc, i once warned a fellow passenger using her cell, she said she wasnt really calling, just "flashing!".  grin

Well,i broke the rules once too, i wasnt calling or "flashing", just wanted to capture the ugly lagos scenery while approaching the MurtalaMI Airport

Both of them should be disciplined. It takes 2 to fight. Maybe d one with the cellphone will get many count charges for indecent use of language, assault, attempt to endanger the lives of Nigerian citizens, e.t.c. The other guy will get a lower sentence.

jassie, u no well. grin

Na true talk. Come to think of it, Naija people are unique. We do our things our own we we dont give a poo, but we still dey feel others.

Who won the fight? Sam Peters for like meet the guy. We have boxers in abundance. Ask Bash Ali. Old but still going.

Two strong IBO guys nearly fought over compartments.

You guys needed to be der to hear HEAVY ACCENT flowing freely.

One of my colleagues is fond of not switching off her fones anytime we travel.
Anytime the plane enters turbulence, i always feel its cos of her fone that is on grin grin

Chanchangihuh na wa o

The pilot shouldnt have ordered the arrest of the other guy now? he was just trying to save everybody.

Re: Passengers Exchange Blows In Moving Airplane by Bossman(m): 8:38pm On Jan 23, 2008
The bottom line is, as of now (that is about to change here though), that's the rules, and it should be obeyed. I just can't believe some of us sometimes. While the usage of mobiles will not directly cause a crash, they can interfere with the functions electronic instruments. And, it can be severe enough to cause problems for the pilot. Most phones(music phones, PDAs, etc.) have "airplane mode" and the phone can be switched to that mode. Most airlines on this end will announce to switch the phones of or to switch to airplane mode. As we speak, some airlines are already experimenting with allowing passengers to use their mobiles. Because it there is evidence that suggests there is not much interference from the mobile signals.

the only sad thing is that the guy restricting the fool from continuing with the call should'nt have been punished because sometimes it requires giving a fool a dazzling slap to save precious lives. cool
Re: Passengers Exchange Blows In Moving Airplane by Gemini25(m): 9:06pm On Jan 23, 2008
The thing about Nigerians is  that when the dude that was on the phone gets to a foreign land, he suddenly becomes well mannered and well behaved.

I have seen many instances of where Nigerians on getting to a foreign place outside the shores of the country will suddenly queue up, be orderly and take turns to do things in a civilsed manner

I am pretty sure that the fool that was talking on the phone would have obeyed the Stewardess if she were white or spoke with a foreign accent. If all our danfo drivers were to be brought to US to drive they would return back to Nigeria changed people,
There's something about the Nigerian when he is at home that  just makes it impossible for him to obey the Law.

The other passenger shouldn't have gotten into a fight with the guy, two wrongs don't make a right, God help Nigeria

No mind them. If they wash toilet finish or sell pepper and garri for yankee; or maybe sell weed small for London carry small coins show Naija, them go dey feel like Obasanjo and Atiku. If they spend 2 weeks them go run commot after spending maybe $2,000 like say na them be Bill Gates.

Me no send them. I can afford to bullshit them 'because I know lots about how Naijas live abroad. Moreover, I no dey lack coins for here.

ROFL ,I can imagine the accents in time of war.
In a related story one Alhaji almost took down a man in suit for placing a suitcase on top of his.
People wandered what the problem was,it was later realised that Alhaji had a copy of his Koran in his suitcase and didn't want anything placed above it.
This is a simple request that anyone would honor but lo,he approached it in the typical Naija aggression and almost caused a jihad aboard a local flight.

Yeah! I was a bit shocked whaen i saw this in the neews today but this could only happen in Nigeria and I remembered that this almost happened on my last flight just 4 days ago; it took the crew almost 15mins to convince a man to switch off his phone.
