when you talk of the nigeria, you have to redefine the nigeria army.. You see, the reason there are coup in nigeria, is because the nigeria army is a divided army. Loyality in the nigeria army is drawn into 3 division.

Northern nigeria Army 30 military barrack

Independent Western Nigeria army (IWENA) 25 military barrack
East army. 20 military barrack.

it as always been so from the start .. there were only 3 division in the army for many years..

loyalty in the army depend on where you comes from.

If you cross their path, they will gun you down even inside the army.. You dont want to be in the wrong place at the wrong time in the nigeria army. many officers have die for been in the wrong places in the army in nigeria.

and with this crisis , you better not have your family as an army officers in the wrong places. any reason officers who have his family in the north would have relocated his family. if they dont.. they will have them self to blame.

There is no loyalty to the nigeria state in the army.

Independent Western Nigeria army (IWENA)

Unfortunately there are some truths to what you are saying. Although, I believe that 80% of the soldiers are from the North, most of the commanders though are from all over the country. We need to be united to address this threat known as Boko Haram and other future threats that may present themselves.
Re: THE Top 10 Countries With The Strongest Army In Africa!! by manck: 5:44pm On Aug 14, 2014
Admission into the Nigeria army is not base on merit. It is based on a bias system where people who score 40 are given admission first before people who score 200.

In nigeria army state with 10 million people are made to have same number of army, police , airforce etc officers as state with 1 million people.

The military in nigeria and the police has the most bias admission and promotion policy in the world.

People who score less than 40 in admission are given prefer by Nigeria law over people who have got over 200 in examination..

The nigeria army is a divided army. Northern nigeria Army or police only represent the interest of the north in the army.. will kill anyone who is against their people interest

setting up Independent Western Nigeria army (IWENA) -- Independent Western Nigeria because international law allow Independent Western Nigeria to set up its own army. And anyone who is against Independent Western Nigeria can go and complain to ICJ

International law allow all independent country to own an Army, Western Nigeria is an independent country.

If Anyone has a problem with setting up of Independent Western Nigeria army (IWENA) , they should go and face this men, because occupation of another country is illegal under international law. Independent Western Nigeria is not a part of Nigeria. It got it independent on 15th November 1957. And Occupation is illegal under international law.

Every country has a mandate to protect its people, culture, history and territory. Western Nigeria inclusive. the north when in power have not followed international law.

onila: Here is some valid information due to recent estimations and studies.

1. South Africa: South Africa (South Africa has the most powerful army in Africa; it has more harmful weapons than any other country in Africa; it is the only African country that was trying to create the Nuclear weapon but was stopped by the US. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) this includes: South African Army, South African Navy, South African Air Force and South African Military Health Service. South Africa has recently lower their budge on army from $7.21 billion 2003 to nearly $4 billion 2011. Trained by Israeli, and British, South African solders are more armed and more trained than any other country's soldiers.

2. Egypt: According to recent study, Egypt is considered to be the second most powerful country in Africa. For many years Egypt has been the first strongest country in the continent of Africa. With number of troops exceed that of South Africa, and more suppliers from countries such as United States, Russia, France, China, Italy and United Kingdom, political instability has made an affect to Egyptian Armed Forces. This includes Egyptian Army, Egyptian Navy, Egyptian Air Force and Egyptian Air Defense Command. Egypt has increased their Armed Forces budget from $3.9 billion to $5.85 billion within the last five years.

3. Libya:

4. Morocco:

5. Nigeria: Nigeria has the second largest army by number of troops, but due to political instability and lack of equipment Nigeria has appear to be the 5th strongest country in Africa. It has been estimated that in year 2013-2018 Nigeria may get weaker.

6. Tanzania: Tanzania has the most powerful army in East Africa; The Tanzania Peoples' Defence Force (TPDF) (Swahili: Jeshi la Wananchi wa Tanzania (JWTZ) the one defeated Idi Amin of Uganda with big help form Muammar Al-Gaddafi of Libya and . The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) The Tanzania People' Defence Force includes Land Forces Command, Naval Command, Air Force Command, and Military Intelligence. Julius Kambarage Nyerere (The first Tanzania's President) prepared president Laurent Desire Kabila of DR Congo to take over the powerful Mobutu Sese Seko Nkuku Ngbendu WA Zabanga; also prepared his son Joseph Kabila. Tanzania has trained Congolese solders in Tabora and Kigoma region for Kabila to return in Congo and take over power. Both Kabilas father and son were schooled and lived most of their lives in Tanzania before returning to Congo. Tanzania Also prepared Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who also schooled and lived in Tanzania before the Tanzania and Uganda war that resulted in defeating Dictator Idi Amin. Most Uganda leader got help from Tanzania before becoming leaders. This includes: Tito Lutwa Okello, Yusuf Kironde Lule, and Bazilio Olara-Okello. Recently, Tanzania did not want to send his solders in Somalia but offer training to Somali solders who will soon return to protect their country. Tanzania sent 924 soldiers to lead the African Union Solders in Comoros's Island to take Colonel Mohamed Bacar of Anjouan off power. Tanzania has the 3rd largest army in number troops after Ethiopia, and Eritrea, and recently considered the second in equipment after Kenya, but with more well trained troops. The recent estimation shows that Tanzania is the country in East-Africa followed by Ethiopia.

7. Ethiopia: Ethiopia once was considered the strongest country in East Africa. After continues civil war Ethiopia has gotten weaker. Ethiopia is still has the largest army by number of troops followed by Eritrea and Tanzania, and the 3rd in equipment after Kenya and Tanzania. 2011 Estimation shows, Ethiopia is spending 2.4% of its GDP in military. This includes: Ethiopia Army and Ethiopia Air Force.

In 1981 Kenya was consider to be the 4th strongest nation in East Africa after Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Somalia. In 1994 Kenya was considered the 3rd strongest country in East Africa after Somalia and Uganda having both economic and political instability caused by war and dictatorship. The estimation indicates that Kenya will get even stronger within next 5-10 years. Kenya has the higher army budget in East Africa followed by Ethiopia. 2012 estimation shows Kenya is using 5.3% of its GDP in military. This includes: Kenya Army, Kenya Navy and Kenya Air Force.

10. Uganda:
pulling statistics from the @nus. How can a countries army that is presently engaged (gaining hardcore experience in desert welfare and CTCOIN) nah is presently being upgraded to face internal and regional insurgents both mechanically and in terms of manpower, how can that kind of force decline within you 2013-2018 given time frame. You see why i said the only reliable source you have of this material is your @nus.
Re: THE Top 10 Countries With The Strongest Army In Africa!! by manck: 1:41am On Aug 16, 2014
it is not an issue of weapon is an issue of what is right or wrong..

the reason why they have the crisis in nigeria is about the satellite picture.. and the only solution is to remove independent Western Nigeria which nigeria illegal occupied to protect the people. either some businessmen dont like it, that is their personal problem.

How in the world Ethiopia can list in the 7th this is not fair Ethiopia were strong and still strong. Ethiopia must put in the first for its military technical knowledge In Africa but Ethiopia is the second strongest( millitay equipment ranking) the ranking must start
1.Egpt
2 . Ethiopia(but In my views this is the first)
3. Algeria
You know what even countries with huge defense budget are unable to defeat Ethiopia like South Africa and Egypt because they lack technical abilities in which Ethiopia masters. Ethiopia in its history has never defeated, Ethiopia the first African to defeat Europian colonizers.

The fact that South Africa is number 1 is enough proof that the list us biased, do not believe that nonsense. Because they have whites there, they want to make it seem like they are somewhat stronger it the strongest which is rubbish of course

IMHO, until Nigeria upgrades its arsenal we are nowhere near the top at the moment. Jonathan made us militarily weak and goons like Boko Haram were able to threaten the security of the country.

Buhari is making strides in bringing us back to our former glory, but a lot has to be done in order to do so. We are using outdated military aircraft for the time being, however, thanks to Innoson, we may one day have some great engines to use in our own home-built military aircraft.

Currently, the following countries have superior aircraft to us:

1. Algeria
2. Ethiopia
3. Eritrea
4. Egypt

How the heck can those countries from a monetary point of view have better aircraft than Nigeria? Simple, they were not nearly as corrupt despite the obvious fact that Nigeria is a far richer country.

As long as we continue to get our acts together and continue voting for great leaders like Buhari who are not ethnic bigots, and are in for the best interests for the country, Nigeria will continue to proper and continue on the right path.
