William Shakespeare is an English poet but the English he used then is not what we use today, Moral: English keeps changing everyday... Anyone trying to correct another persons english, should probably go back to william shakespeare. We as Nigerians we have the right to our own english. English has evolved and it is still evolving, the Anglo saxons, the romans. Unless you are a regular writer and have nurtured your writing skills over a long period, I don't see how certain grammatical errors are completely unavoidable, especially ones for which words are pronounced exactly the same way to mean exactly the same thing.

MRbrownJAY: many may write I AM in such form to ease their typing by writing the word the easiest way possible.....I, for example, always write DONT, CANT, WONT SHOULDNT etc instead of can't, won't, shouldn't.......or better yet ITS instead of it's, and thats because its easier for me to write. now, if i have to write something more official then i certainly will know how to write these words properly.

I teach English Language in a private school, I want volunters readers to spot the remaining errors within the book. I shall post the book chapter by chapter everyday, I do not want errors in my work. Readers should include their phone numbers.

chreld_b: Speaking of wrong and careless usage of words, another disturbing trend I have noticed is the use of "molestation" in place of "molested". It has become so common on NL that I am almost beginning to think that people do it deliberately. You see sentences like these. "The bad men took her to the place and molestation her", "is it because she stole a blackberry that they molestation her". Now thats irritating.

I'm in university and proofread essays at times. Too many times do students get the above three confused. Either they don't know or they don't care to know. I'm convinced the falling standards of the English language isn't subject to Nigerians alone. That certainly doesn't make it alright, however.

Lol, Imagine the shocker you would have received when you click on submit if you tried to do over sabi to correct the person @ bolded. The sentence would have come out something like this. "Mumu some people can't even write properly it's not why did they molestation her, its why did they molestation her". For instance, I've seen folks writing "I [b]learnt [/b]that", I thought learnt wasn't correct but learned? Hey, if it fits their boat, so be it.

caukerzee: please, put more light to the 'being' and 'been'. I am one of those people who really forget the differences. Where do i use which?

ogugua88: I don't understand the "but it's not our language" argument. If you're learning English, then learn it well. We jump and shout when our names and words are butchered by foreigners. Don't mutilate someone else's language because it's not yours. Respect another's language the way we respect our own.
