Jega Admits Flaws In Ondo Guber Poll by PaulJohn1: 8:18pm On Nov 10, 2012
The re-elected governor of Ondo State Olusegun Mimiko, Labour Party candidate.
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Attahiru Jega has admitted that there were some irregularities and imperfections in the October 20, 2012, governorship election in Ondo State.

In an interview with LEADERSHIP WEEKEND in Washington, DC, United States, on Thursday night, Jega said: "To be honest, there were some imperfections and irregularities during the just-concluded governorship poll in Ondo State. The irregularities were very few compared to all the other elections we have conducted since April 2011.

"For example, in Ilaje area, we had a situation where some National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members disappeared on the election day and we had to cancel results in about 25 wards; the number of wards cancelled did not affect the final result but it is an unfortunate thing that there were such irregularities because these are people who have signed up for election duty and they disappeared when they were needed."

The INEC chairman stated further that there are always irregularities in any election but noted that the most important thing is that such irregularities should not constitute factors that can affect the success of elections.

Speaking on the allegations of the opposition parties that the election was rigged in favour of Governor Olusegun Mimiko, Jega said: "You know politicians can say anything they like and you cannot stop people from making accusations or allegations, but if they have any evidence, let them go and prove it in the court.

"It is clear and the fact of the matter is that we trained corps members. We knew they were supposed to come and collect materials and, suddenly, they did not come to collect those materials; they disappeared. And you know there was nothing we could do than to make sure that no election took place in the affected areas. If election did not take place, you couldn"t declare results in those places."

Earlier at a seminar tagged "Towards the 2015 General Elections in Nigeria", held at the Wilson Centre in Washington, DC, Jega said that the electoral body was striving to make 2015 elections substantially better than 2011 by drawing lessons and factoring them into the commission's preparations for the polls.

He also berated Nigerian politicians who often make use of their resources and influence to exhibit what he called "do or die mentality", stressing that INEC would continue to work on such politicians in order to achieve remarkable improvement in the 2015 elections in Nigeria.

He also said that electoral offences are often committed in Nigeria with impunity, adding that this was the reason the electoral body supports the calls for the establishment of an electoral offences tribunal that will be handling the prosecution of electoral offenders.

Speaking on the preparations of INEC for the 2015 elections, Jega promised that it would improve on stakeholders' consultations, increase civic and voter education, refine and improve use of technology and accreditation, improve in the training of electoral officers and increase transparency and integrity of the country's electoral process.

Irregularities are not uncommon during elections world over. If the result does not overwhelmingly or significantly impinge upon the outcome of elections, then the likes of A.C.N and PDP, who may be waiting for excuses to yell should channel their energy and strategy towards 2015 elections, rather than spend money for petition, which can better serve the common man on the street.

Why won't they run? when they know that there lives doesn't have a duplicate. We were told by our trainer (SPO) during the INEC training that Ilaje is the most dangerous place in Ondo State, that election materials are always hijacked by hoodlums and Corpers are always thrown into the river because it's a riverine area. I want to believe that many corpers were scared of the unknown, I just thank God that my ward in Ondo West (Ondo Town) was peaceful that day despite the bad records i learnt the place used to have. The most annoying part of the whole issue is that INEC hasn't paid us up to this moment. This country is not worth dying for, if you ask me.

Your question should be answered by friends and relatives of those youth corp members that were murdered in Bauchi state during the last presidential election.

... And you think you have any credibility left for you? If you can admit this in just a state election, could you just humbly resign before the D-Election in 2015. What pained me most about this fraudulent man is the stress he made us pass through during voter's registration and thereafter refused to release those biometric data to be used in court proceedings.

Key issues to note:

In an interview with LEADERSHIP WEEKEND in Washington, DC, United States, on Thursday night, Jega said: "To be honest, there were some imperfections and irregularities during the just-concluded governorship poll in Ondo State. The irregularities were very few compared to all the other elections we have conducted since April 2011. (i.e. there is an improvement in the electoral process)

Tuesday's US elections that renewed the tenancy agreement of Mr. Barrack Hussein Obama, the half-white occupant of the White House also had irregularities BUT they were not enough to affect the OVERALL success and outcome of the elections. And this is what matters.

Nothing involving human beings is PERFECT!
Let us get more involved so that OUR electoral process can CONTINUE to improve.
We cannot continue to leave it to godfathers who "invest millions of pounds" and local respected rogues to give crumbs money & gifts to illiterates and semi-literates to vote for their "annointed" candidates shocked
How many of us know our constituency's LG councillors, state assembly member and federal representative & senator

U must be really brainless.
Obasanjo and Iwu that bastardized the electoral process , did they even admit a single flaw in the face of massive glaring irregularities.
People are commending them for the election and he is humble enough to say he could have done more . All ur hatefilled heart could produce was that he should resign.
.
Go tell ur sponsors , he is staying beyond 2015

Exactly
Somebody spoke of voter suppression; now this is electoral officer suppression
25 wars means at least 25 corpers. They just did not show up! They saw a vision in the night? Where were they serving before the election
Somebody saying that the place is dangerous and corpers did not show up does not make sense. They must have known that the place was not safe before they accepted the job

Sequence - don't show up; result will not be declared in that place controlled by my opponent; this is your pay for taking the day off and using same time to watch EPL or Nollywood!

This is exactly the spirit of complacency and mediocrity that has brought this nation to her knees and unable to rise again. Hell we should never even criticise any of our so called leaders who seem to have developed a knack for stealing anything good in sight cos, afterall, they are just humans, and they arnt perfect.. Jega, we did not ask for perfect election. Just strive to provide excellent elections that reflect the wishes of the people. I think that tho Ondo and Edo elections were excellent!

Anyone not happy, please, take a look at your face on the mirror. You are beautiful or handsome 'shee', but take a hard look and you will find some imperfections. That does not remove the fact that you are still beautiful or handsome.

God bless Nigeria!!

This was a deliberate plot to rig in favour of Mimiko the incumbent candidate of the Labour Party. Why Ilaje that was the strong hold of OKE the PDP candidate? All thru the campaign there was no record of violence in Ilaje LG but OWO, ONDO and IRELE. Corp members showed up in those violent local governments only to disappear in Ilaje...
JEGA and INEC are frauds!
