Kalakuta Museum: Befitting honour to a music icon

November 3, 2012 by CHUX OHAI

The opening of a new museum dedicated to the life and times of the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti spells a new dawn in cultural tourism in Lagos, writes CHUX OHAI

On Oct. 15, all roads led to 7, Gbemisola Street, the home of the late Afro-beat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, in the heart of Ikeja, Lagos.

History was made  that day as the two-storey building was formally renamed Kalakuta Museum.

The new museum, arguably the first of its kind in memory of a departed music icon in this part of the world, is designed as a multipurpose facility. It is divided into different sections with specific functions, including a guest house with five bedrooms en suite, a library for music and cultural researchers, a restaurant and bar.

But the centre of attraction is the museum proper, which is located on the first floor where Fela lived till his death in 1997. It will contain the musician’s personal possessions, including his shoes, about 40 pairs or more, clothes and a saxophone that was used by him.

SSN gathered that the facility was designed by Theo Lawson of Total Consult and funded with a grant from the Lagos State Government.

In a telephone interview with SSN, Fela’s daughter, Yeni, said the family received the sum of N30m for the construction of the museum. “But we will need more money to complete the project. The construction was estimated to cost N78m. If we get the funds now, the museum will be finished by December,” she said.

So far, the Kutis have embarked on a drive to raise funds for the facility. As usual, the driving factor is the urge to preserve the history and legacies of the self-styled Abami Eda for future generations of Nigerians and indeed, Africans.

The opening of the museum marks the fulfilment of a dream long nurtured by Yeni, her brother Femi, and the rest of the Kuti family. “We dreamed of a befitting honour to my father, which eventually translated into a proposal. At the time we submitted the proposal to the Lagos State Government, we didn’t know that the authorities were also thinking of a similar thing. It didn’t take too long before the government decided to act on it,” Yeni told SSN.

Apart from its significance to tourism and cultural development in Lagos State, the museum is expected to go a long way in preserving the history of Fela, his philosophy, music, cultural activism, nuances, and documents.

Tourists, journalists and researchers are expected to find the library useful in their work, not only on Fela, but African music, history, politics, and culture.

In a recent interview, which he granted a major newspaper in Lagos, renowned graphic artist and designer, Lemi Ghariokwu, described the Kalakuta Museum as essentially revolving around the life and times of Fela.

“It is going to be a global research centre for Afrobeat and Fela. He lived a frugal lifestyle; the communal African life. He shared things with everybody. He had a simple room with just his mattress on the floor, no bed. He had his clothes rack, saxophone, rug on the floor and some other little things. The room is going to be glassed so that nobody will enter to remove or touch anything,” he had said.

Indeed, apart from newspaper clippings of stories depicting various stages in the life of Fela, his photographs and that of his wives and children, visitors to the museum should expect more to satisfy their craving for additional information on the icon and his works.

In her reaction to the notion previously entertained in certain quarters that the old Kalakuta Republic had changed ownership, Yeni said the property was still intact.

“It is not true that the property has been sold to the Lagos State Government. People should stop spreading false stories. The government didn’t buy the house from us. It only gave us a grant to complete the transition from a residential house to a world class museum.

“The property still belongs to the family. It is not even on lease to anybody or institution,” she said.

In its current state, 7, Gbemisola Street has been  remarkably transformed. A few years ago, it was a Mecca of sorts bustling with various activities and the favourite haunt of many artists, writers, musicians, cultural historians, journalists and other pilgrims desiring contact with the late music icon.

In those days, the defunct Kalakuta Republic was a melting pot of activities, often enlivened and busy, with scores of visitors mingling with members of Fela’s family and associates.

Apart from its immediate significance, Kalakuta Museum will nonetheless usher in a new dimension in cultural tourism in Lagos State.

It is a way of showing that he is listening to you, that he considers what you are saying important, it is also a mark of respect, you are meant to have your hands behind your back when you are talking to your elders.
