@ FSB,

thanks a great deal for the information. I have been looking for someone like you to help out. There is this lady i have been seeing for a while. I love her so much and marriage ASAP is already in my plans but there is the problem of genotype. This breaks my heart so much. I have gone for genotype test 3 times. First one i was given AC. Second was AA. Wanting to be doubly (or triple sure), i went for a third test and it turned out to be AC. Now my girlfriend also is AC. For me thats a problem. My parents are both AA. My elder brother is AA. So where did i get the AC from? I am confused. I love this girl but dont want pains for her and myself later when we start having children.

Please, i desperately need immediate advice. Any other Doctor in the house pls help.

My dear if both your parents are of the AA Hb genotype, u can't be any different. Go to a reputable hospital for hemoglobin test.

What kind of source is that? A Nigerian blog ..seriously? They first said HB CC was a type of a hemoglobin And went onto say it is Sickle cell Confused much?

Dont be misinformed Hemoglobin CC is a type of hemoglobin in its own own right and has nothing to do with Sickle cell.

Other rare hemoglobin variants are D and E

The popular ones are hemoglobin A and S. Hemoglobin A is the usual hemoglobin in ppl, although variants of the normal hemoglobin dont always cause problems
So a Nigerian blog is incapable of dishing out something sensible

Although I am not a medical practitioner like I earlier mentioned, time and time again you have proven you don't have a full grasp of the discourse yourself. Below is a journal by Murphy JR concerning the back and forth, and I'd really love to see you respond after this.

Hemoglobin CC disease: rheological properties of erythrocytes and abnormalities in cell water

Abstract

Suspensions of erythrocytes from patients with hemoglobin (Hb) CC disease showed an increased viscosity and decreased filterability suggesting a less deformable cell. Hemolysates prepared from Hb CC erythrocytes had an increased viscosity compared with hemolysates of normal cells, suggesting that the increased viscosity of Hb CC cells in serum was the result of an increased internal viscosity of the cell. These abnormal rheological properties of Hb CC erythrocytes were associated with a decreased content of cations and an abnormality of cell water. The fraction of the cell volume, which is water in Hb CC cells, was 95.5% of normal. The amount of cell water in Hb CC cells available for osmotic equilibrium, termed solvent water, was only 67% of that in normal cells. The smaller amount of solvent water in Hb CC cells indicates a greater amount of water bound to protein.

Altered rheological properties of erythrocytes with Hb AA, CC, and SC also were observed during pregnancy. Suspensions of erythrocytes in serum or plasma from pregnant patients resulted in an increased viscosity compared with suspension in serum or plasma from nonpregnant individuals. An increased viscosity during pregnancy is consistent with the increased severity of the hemolytic anemia in patients with these hemoglobinopathies during pregnancy. The studies reported here suggest that in Hb CC disease the mechanism of erythrocyte destruction, splenic sequestration, results from the increased viscosity, and less deformability of the erythrocyte with on increased internal viscosity.

How about we play a bit and run to Wikipedia? undecided

Haemoglobin C (abbreviated as Hb C or HbC) is an abnormal haemoglobin in which substitution of a glutamic acid residue with a lysine residue at the 6th position of the β-globin chain has occurred (E6K substitution).

Combinations with other conditions[edit]
Individuals with sickle cell–hemoglobin C (HbSC), have the gene for HbS inherited from one parent and the gene for HbC is inherited from the other parent: they are "heterozygous". Since HbC does not polymerise as readily as HbS, there is less sickling (fewer sickle cells). The peripheral smear demonstrates mostly target cells and only a few sickle cells. There are fewer acute vaso-occlusive events. However, persons with haemoglobin SC disease (HbSC) have more significant retinopathy, ischemic necrosis of bone, and priapism than those with pure SS disease.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemoglobin_C

In your words;
Dont be misinformed Hemoglobin CC is a type of hemoglobin in its own own right and has nothing to do with Sickle cell.

Guess what Wikipedia believes...

Arguments drain me, to be honest, and you have not really assisted a clueless noob as myself as far as genotypes are concerned.

To understand what AC is, I believe it'll be best you understand what the normal is?

The story goes,

What you have following in your blood are cells, the most predominant of which are called RED BLOOD CELLS (RBCs). These cells contain within them HEMOGLOBIN, a substance without which the RBCs are invariably useless. This hemoglobin itself is composed of 2 parts: a heme (don't bother yourself, this basically is a complex Iron-protein complex) and globin (2 pairs of protein chains, this is the important part).

There are 2 alpha and 2 beta globin chains - the pair, and there is a normal way the chains are supposed to be structured. The error happens when a protein substitution occurs in any one of these chains - but particularly in the globin chains (First of all, you have to understand that amino acids are the building blocks of proteins - so if amino acid 'x' is the normal, an abnormality occurs when instead of 'x' at a particular location along the chain, you have 'y'.)

That is as simple as it gets. These errors of substitution are given the big name of 'THALASSAEMIAS'. In reality, a substitution will occur at any point along either the alpha or beta chains but for the purposes of simplicity and to answer your question, we focus on the genotypes AS, SS, AC.

Genotype AA: At position 6 of both globin chains, the amino acid is GLUTAMATE
Genotype AS: At position 6 of one globin chain is GLUTAMATE and at position 6 of the second globin chain, you have VALINE
Genotype SS: At position 6 of both globin chains, the amino acid is VALINE
Genotype AC: At position 6 of one globin chain is GLUTAMATE and at position 6 of the second globin chain, you have LYSINE

I hope you can appreciate the above. This little substitutions can cause significant differences in the quality of life that you experience with a genotype.

I'll post this and continue with HOW DO PEOPLE GET THEIR GENOTYPES!!!

Very simple and self explanatory, I love it.......

Correct me but I don't think your calculation is correct. Rather, for every birth, an AS+AS couple has a 25% chance of birthing an SS child.
My advice: For any that can produce SS kindly be mature and refrain from such relationship.

Not quite. But i also believe it depends on individuals... Eventhough i'm AA,i rarely fall sick. I only fall sick when i overstress myself, physically and sometimes emotionally. But not a very serious one. I get well when i take warm baths and a lot of rest...

You lack understanding. When a person is heterozygous for HBSC then obviously you call it sickle cell-hemoglobin C undecided notice the hyphen.

But hemoglobin C as a hemoglobin variant has nothing to do with sickle cell. They are not the same. The symptoms are quite similar and sometimes overlap which is why ppl sometimes talk about one and bring up the other.

Why did you now skip this bit?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemoglobin_C
Hemoglobin C disease is not a form of sickle cell disease.
