Oyo State Government on Thursday met with
commercial drivers, operators of commercial
motorcycles, popularly called okada, and other
stakeholders in the transportation sector in line with the enumeration and registration of stakeholders in the state.

The meeting, which held at the Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan on Thursday, was to sensitise stakeholders on the enumeration and registration exercise billed to hold soon in the state.

Declaring the meeting open, the Special Adviser to
Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Information and
Orientation, Mr. Gbolagade Busari, explained that the initiative was aimed at improving the transportation sector.

The programme tagged, ‘Oyo State Transporters
Enumeration and Registration Scheme,’ is aimed at
providing training and safety briefing to drivers and riders in order to minimise accidents within the state.

Busari, who described the move as part of
government’s transformation agenda, added that the enumeration and registration of operators and their owners became necessary in view of crimes
committed with motorcycles and commercial vehicles in the state.

According to him, the programme is designed to
identify genuine stakeholders in the state transportation sector and also help government meet their needs.
Busari said, “We want to transform Oyo State and
change the orientation of the people.”
Giving details of the programme, the Chief Executive Officer, Synercom Group, Mr. Adewale Adebiyi, said, “All taxi, okada, tipper and lorry drivers would be registered on local government basis.

“They would enjoy free eye and blood tests and would be given free high visibility jacket that were already numbered.

“All these would help commuters and other members of the public identify genuine commercial drivers and cyclists as well as help government offer free medical service with up to N10,000 value in cases of accident.

The programme will cost each operator between
N1,500 and N3,000, depending on the category in which they fall.”

Can't anything be done within hundreds of Naira? Must everything always amount to thousand and above in Naira?

This is what the egg heads in lagos should have considered

Rather than frustrating young people when employment rates is at its lowest and traffic congestion is at its worst.

Regulation rather than an outright ban

The major problem attributable to the use of commercial motorcycle is the security lapse it engenders. It's very easy to commit crime with a motor cycle. That's why I support its ban in some states (especially the north).

but all in all you have to consider that generally road networks in Nigeria are so poor and . . . .

has any body ever connected the increase in demand for PMS to the ban on okada. It is a far cheaper alternative for the citizenry and even the nation
