Lagos arrests cart-pushing yam sellers

Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit has arrested 10 yam sellers for breaching the state traffic law.

The sellers were accused of conveying their products on carts along major roads, which Taskforce Chairman, Superintendent Bayo Sulaiman, said was an “eyesore and against the provisions of the state traffic law”.

According to Sulaiman, the yam sellers were arrested hawking yams in their carts on Ikorodu Road and Motorway end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway between Wednesday and Thursday.

The Taskforce boss said, “The ones arrested at Motorway were even pushing their carts against the traffic. They almost caused accidents.”

He said the enforcement of the law against using carts to convey goods and wastes had started, adding that the government would not listen to any sentiment in doing its job.

Sulaiman said, “Before now, government met the leaders of yam sellers in the state and warned that no one should sell yam using cart on roads in the state. They agreed to comply, but few days after, they went back to doing the same thing we warned them against.

“We called them two days ago (Tuesday) for another meeting. We told the leaders that we had started enforcement against cart pushing in the state. These yam sellers cause accidents on roads and obstruct traffic as they usually push their carts against the flow of traffic.

“Some of them would convey their yam to Ikorodu and Agege from Mile 12 on carts. This is not acceptable to government.

“The law of the state wants them to stop moving on the highway with their carts. Any time we see cart

pushers selling yams and other products, we are going to arrest them.”

He added that the Taskforce would continue to go round the state to make sure that cart pushing for whatever purpose was a thing of the past.

He urged other cart pushers to obey the traffic law by going off the expressway while using their carts for hawking and other purpose.

When our correspondent went to the state special court where the yam sellers were moved to, an official who pleaded anonymity said three of them had been sentenced to 24-hour community service, while their yams had been confiscated

I hate everything cart on the roads including barrow pushers. The ban should be extended to Port Harcourt ASAP. Nigeria is gradually changing. The use of Okada is now history in most major cities, next is cart pushing before hawking.

This is certainly a good time to be an Olopa in Lagos. I am sure most of them would be praying that the cart pushers continue to flout the directive given so they can make arrests of their own. Enough yam for them to eat pounded yam as they like.
Up Fashola for this!

Will you be banning them because they're disobeying laws or simply because they're selling porn movies?

By definition if they are breaking the law then they are already banned and if we decide to ban them that means new legislation? Logic. Come on you can do better than that The issue is one of law enforcement. Most of these issues are not new laws

There are a number of things that strike me when I see these guys.

They must be very fit because it literally is "not yam"(pun intented) to push a barrow of yam in the hot sun or rain from Mile 12 to Ikorodou daily or even several times daily.

Does it make business sense? Why do they not all come together and form a cooperative and establish a yam market in Ikorodu and pay for bulk transport

Will it be cheaper to the end user. I mean after all that "SUFFERNESS" they would want to accuse the innocent yams of all the sins in this world with the prices they apply.

We continue to accuse aboki of inflated population figures but the numbers of young men trooping down south daily gives the lie to this claim

I don't believe they need a new ban some things are already illegal and what is needed is enforcement. The road is a Motorway and pushing a barrow along it is like pushing a barrow or cycling on a train line. There is no need for a new ban

Some people have little kids in thier cars seeing such rubbish. I have nothing against porn...if thats what adults want to watch, thats their issue...but please keep it hidden from eye view until someone asks for it.
