AKURE—AFENIFERE, a pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Wednesday, challenged President Goodluck Jonathan to rise and act fast to stem the spate of insecurity and the wanton destruction of lives and property or face the possibility of hoodlums completely taking over the country.

Secretary-General of the group, Bashorun Seinde Arogbofa, said the rate at which kidnappers abduct prominent Nigerians and the Boko Haram menace had not only put the lives of people at risk, but also scared away prospective investors.

Arogbofa listed the recent abduction of the mother of Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the wife of former Governor of Western Region, Gen. Oluwole Rotimi (rtd), as examples, which had brought bad publicity to the country.

According to him, “nobody is any longer safe in the country. Just a few days ago, it was the elderly Prof (Mrs) Okonjo that was kidnapped; only yesterday it was the wife of Gen. Oluwole Rotimi, former governor of Western Region.

“In the Northern part of the country, the Boko Haram is in charge and kills with reckless abandon.”

The group asked the President to act decisively before the menace gets out of total control, while expressing concern over the President’s various reactions to insecurity in the country.

The group warned that criminals may take over the country if the government fails to act decidedly.

Arogbofa alleged conspiracy among the criminals and some security agencies in the country.
He said: “More than any time, President Jonathan must not only be seen to be barking but biting if criminality is to be brought under control in the country.

“The President should act, especially by giving red card to the nation’s security officers in particular the Police and prisons officials, while the Bar and the Bench must no longer toy with or rationalise obvious criminal cases.

“While it may be true as said by AIG Tsafe in Abeokuta that ransom paid to criminals to hasten the release of victims is mainly responsible for the rise in kidnapping, is that why the Police, believed to be aware of most criminals in the society, have not always acted swiftly and decidedly when criminals strike?

fingard02k: Who's fault?

It is not about looking for who to blame. We are where we are. We should all accept that. If drastic measures are not taken, the inadequate and lackadaisical efforts of government towards the security of lives and property will only hasten our march towards becoming a totally failed State like Somalia where criminals, terrorists and warlords control 'turfs'. With increasing criminality and lawlessness gaining an upper hand in Nigeria, we will all become victims, directly or otherwise, sooner or later.

Nothing new here! Hoodlums, brigands, cabals, despots, and rascals have ran and ruin this country for very long time. What we are witnessing now is the result of commulative damage to the country's commonwealth. The president can only do so much. Local leaders and state governors have as much stake in peace, security, and welfare of their constituency, and this include Afenifere itself. Rather than whining, complaining and pointing fingers, they should intensive effort in sensitising their immediate communities and society. FG cannot do it alone!

This is a very serious issue. My inlaw now drives around in a bullet proof 4x4 in port harcourt. It cost him a couple of $100,000s and he ain't even one of the richest guys there. People are spending a fortune on personal security with normal level rich men having to keep their families abroad. This is not good.

It is now official that oily soup causes retardation of the brain cells. So 2012, after 60 years of hoodlum rulership, Afenifere starts to sound warnings. Have they been asleep all these years or is this the consequence of free education?

I wonder why Afenifere is complaining now. This is one Nigeria that we all fought for, we are just enjoying the fruits of our labor. One Nigeria.

Criminals have been in power for decades in nigeria. The present senators are all terrorists and criminals, same are the governors, while the presisident caps it all.Yet they are blabbing about criminals taking over.

What is happening in nigeria today is the ugly result of decades of gross irresponsibilities in leadership.Nigeria was like a massive ship without navigational instruments, totally dependant on the mercies of the elements to cross the gigantic ocean.

One expects you to know better except you are just been mischievous
You speak as if the control of security lies in the hands of states
Such what you alluded to above can only be workable in a true federal system not the centrist model run by the FG

Its pathetic some dunces are using what is a serious national security issue to throw ethnic jabs on this thread undecided undecided
Would you rather Arewa or Ohaneze raised this alarm for you to applaud?
This is something happening all over the nation -North, East, West and South-
Nigeria has always battled with insecurity after the civil war especially but it was never this bad like what obtains today

There's definitely a rise in the spate of lawlessness in this country. Those of us that follow events in Nigeria know why.
Make no mistakes the Otedola VS Farouk Lawan saga and compensation to Niger delta militants is a catalyst to this recent huge rise in crime. Needless mentioning the consistent looting of our commonwealth by government officials.
................. Everybody now know that crime pay in Nigeria.

@Ochuko
what are you rambling about? Why not submit your theories as to how the problem can be curtailed? You alluded that only FG can tackle the problem of insecurity, pray say, why the do state governor recieve security votes from FG? Are they not supposed to augment FG effort with it? As for Afenifere and other local leaders, I insist they can play key roles in security of lives and properties within the area of influence. Same goes for Ohaneze and Arewa. So sitting somewhere and pointing fingers and whining like market women solves exactly zilch of the problem. I see no reason why you cannot grasp a simple logic that FG CANNOT DO IT ALONE! Well unless something is clearly missing somewhere upstairs or you are the one purveying mischief here!
