Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by spikedcylinder: 10:31am On May 16, 2006
Actually i think its a common misconception among non-igbo speakers and even some igbo speakers that those names are insults or bad in some kind of way.
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by Zahymaka(m): 11:22am On May 16, 2006
If Mgbeke is not pronounced right it could have a derogatory meaning.
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by kajad(m): 11:55am On May 16, 2006
Yeh your are right The names are now considered archaic.
Do you know that people also use eliza ‘Elizabeth’ in derogatory form or as a kind of insult too.

Yes. It should be Igbo. It was my grandmother's name. But my own mother doesn't know what it means. undecided My cousin is also named that (after granny of course). I'm thinking that maybe it's an archaic name. And we're from the country so. . .maybe it was never popular in other areas. Who do you suppose I should ask? Does it sound like another language to you? Which? Thanks for asking around for me.
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by mamaput(f): 7:00am On May 17, 2006
It could be that your grandmother was named after her grandmother who came from

The same with me my igbo name ended up not being an igbo name but from "Bendel" name.

Its also possible you come from one of there boarder villages were people will always argue with you were you come from.

CAN SOMEONE PLS TELL ME THE MAENING OF MY NAME? UGONNA?

MY BEST IGBO NAME IS CHUKWUDUMEBI cool cool cool cool cool
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by chinani(f): 8:28pm On Jun 23, 2006
Ugonna translates "Father's eagle".

Or if God is meant by "Father" than "God's eagle". (But then Ugochi translates to "God's eagle" spot on.)

I've also heard that the meaning of Ugochi is "Divine prestige". The divinity would be God's annointment persay & the prestige would be the eagle so you are the "feather in the cap".

So Ugonna could be "Divine prestige" or "Father's prestige".

Someone, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong. . . smiley
