Fine. but don't just assume that only elected govt officials are corrupt. the funny thing is that, the non-elected govt officials engage in huge corruption with the justification that the elected ones are corrupt. This in turn, puts pressure on the elected officials to engage in their own massive corruption.(after all, how will; Pam secs and directors be looting the money under my watch as a commissioner. the commissioner joins the band.)

those days Guys in PHCN (genco and transysco) complain that those in disco were too corrupt some say, contract staff of disco, were building houses and buying cars; hence want to justify their corrupt intentions. the guys in disco in turn claimed guys in transysco and genco had more imprest that were mismanaged. what happened, PHCN became drowned in corruption from top to bottom. rather than PHCN purging themselves of their corruption, the simply blamed it on the elected politicians. and the cycle continues. this is a picture of the corruption cycle in Nigeria. Every one is blaming the other.

Corroption will only reduce in Nigeria when each individual Nigerian realize that he is part of the corrupt system and stop his own corrupt actions. No anti corroption bill, Police,EFCC ICPC or any individual leader can stop corruption except the individual Nigerian.

I agree with you, Infact I would have written that, but since my comment was my signature it was easier copying and I assumed someone was going to write what you wrote.

Trust me, the judiciary is actually the most important arm of goverment when it comes to corruption issues.

If our judiciary is efficient, we can be sure all corrupt individual and officials will be dealt with severely.

If the judiciary is effective, corruption will reduce drastically, what it means that corrupt officials and individuals will be charged and their loots restored to the rightful owners.

All in all, I agree with your post, each politician was first an individual.

I so much appreciate the fact that you write with a calm spirit.

Now, you said he is not the problem and the corruption was existing even before he (GEJ) became the deputy governor. Let me tell you today that GEJ as a person in not really my own problem but I have always believed that for corruption to go away from this country, it must be start from the top and it will automatically cascade down to the bottom and not bottom-up

They at the top are the law makers and at the same time the law enforcer.

Bottom-up change only happen by revolution.

Our past and current leaders knows that we hate ourselfs and they are using it to promote enemity between us and they have blinded a lot of people with the mindset of that if its not someone from their region that's in power that the person is not qualified and that's the mindset 99% of Nigerians carry about and you can see evidence of it on this forum, a youroba or hausa cannot support an igbo presidency even if the contester is qualified because he is not from their region likewise other tribes so that's where our major problem comes from. The best way to stop corrupt is to build a corrupt free armed force and police who have zero tolerance fo corruption and a passion for nigerians growth who are ready to enforce the law or even kill corrupt politicians

ffo: It is a known fact that most Nigerians are corrupt.

I believe we have roles and part to play to clean up the system, no matter how small it may appear. If every body starting from everyone of us plays our part, corruption will reduce to some extent in the year 2013.

Fellow Nairalanders, what role do we play as Nigerians to reduce corruption in Nigeria?

Your opinions will be highly appreciated.

Thanks for your writeup. For corruption to go away, We as they people have to realize that our leaders are using tribalism to cheat on us while at the back door they shook hands and dine together but in the open they make us see them as enemies, now if he realize this problem and put an end to it, Next is the judiciary and armed forces, if they judiciary can be cleaned with the arm forces and they will do their work as they should do it, then corruption will be a thing of the past cause if you are caught giving or taking bribes and you will be arrested and prosecuted and sentenced to prison with all assets seized you will see that corruption will die a natural death.

For example, in the case of otedola and farouk, if they both were arrested and jailed for giving and taking bribe you will see that government officials will have a rethink on corruption. (Unless SSS can proof that they gave otedolla the money he claimed is marked then he can go scot free) but in this case.

The People are blinded folded with tribalism been promoted by the leaders.

The Judiciary is as corrupt as the Armed Forces coupled with the thief's in the house of rep and senates, Don't you see that there is no hope for this country? unless God intervenes.

Re: What Role Do We Play To Reduce Corruption In Nigeria? by mayoroflag(m): 11:29am On Dec 21, 2012
We need to encourage business at arms length. Another word for that is capitalism or markets system. This system does not eradicate corruption but it reduces it. It also encourages openness, competition and innovation and everybody see and knows why someone deserves something. Remember NITEL and all the 4 former government banks. Remember also that you usually have a choice to buy something cheaper for better quality because more than one option is always available to you. When government forces us to use only one means to access goods or services, it creates room for people to load inefficiencies on the customer who is forced to pay for it all. This why NEPA has not been successfully privatized all these years.

We need to question socialists in government, civil servants and labour unions who claim to be advancing the interests of the people while they are actually amassing ill-gained wealth. This also includes your NANS executive in your school.

I also believe that the police should be decentralized across to states, but they will form part of the judiciary rather than report to the governor or local government chairman.

We need to encourage government to use tax as its MAJOR source of revenue and not oil. With tax and a source of income, government (and its staff) will be forced to think of how to create wealth opportunities in every sector which can then be taxed. It will also need to improve its revenue generation drive to bring every employable Nigeria under tax. Why is this important? Because if everybody is paying their taxes, some, if not most, will be interested in what their money is being used for. In US, it was payment of tax that made its residents to begin to ask for independence from UK. The slogan then was "no taxation without representation". It might sound suicidal, but I believe we should now be saying "no representation without taxation" in Nigeria.

Also let us begin to ask the governers questions on what we have been committed to. For example, our constitution says "We the people..." and annexes the oil mineral wealth in Niger Delta in the name of all Nigerians. Yet the country does not run a free total National Health program, an Unemployment Benefits Programme, a free education programme and a retirement benefits programme that all Nigerians (even Niger Delta people) are entitled to....
