Good morning,

Jglad: why do we have boxing day?

The 'why' in boxing day is directly tied to the need for people to be charitable, especially to the less privileged.

Jglad: What is it about and what are we suppose to do today?

For some people, boxing day is a day when we open the gifts received at Chriistmas. That is, the gifts remain in their boxes only to be opened today. But for some others boxing day is a day of relaxation and may be a time to go out 'gaming'. Some others still, prefer to use today to visit those in the hospitals, orphanages etc in order to bring them the Christmas exerience. Whatever you decide to do today actually depends on you.

Jglad: What originated it?... I need to know

The origin is quite obscure but it is believed to have begun in the UK. Some school of thought believe it might have started in the middle ages and is associated with the Aristocrats of the time. That is, on every 26th of December the Aristos of the time permit their servants to visit their families ofwhich they are given gifts in boxes probably for their families.

Another school of thought are of the opinion that the practice might have started with the Anglican church where boxes are placed outside their churches to collect alms that are probably meant for the poor.

Though both events occured some time in the past, it is not entirely clear when it began.

However, for Catholic Christians every 26th of December is specially set aside as a day where the first Christian martyr (St Stephen) is remembered for his witness to Jesus, the son of God.

Thank you!
