Nigeria’s Lagos State Government has given 140 transformers to members of the state House of Assembly and the government Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals, MDAs, to ensure adequate power generation. Commissioner for Rural Development, Cornelius Ojelabi handed over the transformers to members of the Assembly on Thursday at the premises of El-Sewedy Electric Nigeria Limited in Badagry. He disclosed that the transformers and their installation cost N975 million, adding that while 132 of the transformers are for the 40 members of the Assembly to distribute to their constituencies, the remaining eight transformers are for government’s MDAs. The commissioner stated that with the handing over of the transformers, Governor Babatunde Fashola had fulfilled his promise to the lawmakers that he would give transformers to them in according to the needs of their constituencies. Ojelabi appealed to the lawmakers to ensure that members of their communities derived maximum benefit from the transformers. He lamented that several members of the Community Development Associations, CDAs, in the state had reneged in paying their annual fees of N5,000. He appealed to the lawmakers to urge CDAs in their constituencies to pay the fees as the transformers being distributed might elude them if they failed to do so. “El-Sewedy gave us one year warranty. Receiving the transformers on behalf of the Assembly, the Speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji commended the state government for the gesture, saying that the government delivered the transformers at the appropriate time. Ikuforiji, who was represented by the Chairman, House Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, Ibrahim Layode said the transformers would be distributed to the various constituencies, adding that the House would ensure that they were well maintained. He said the House would appeal to the various CDAs to pay their annual fees of N5,000 on time so that they could benefit more from the state government.
