I wonder what could be the meaning of the name in yoruba as the same name is borne by some tribe in the north especially hausa. Please, who knows the meaning?

How do you explain the fact that only Nigerian people bear the name? Other Arabic cultures use such varieties of the name as: Awwal , Aouar but not Lawal.

Lai is Abdullahi
Bakare is Abubakar
Mero is Maryam
Muama is Muhammad

I'd agree with you on Bakare and Muama being Abu-Bakr and Muhammad but then, I think…

Lai = Laiwola,
Mero = ?? (note: Maryam has neither 'e' nor 'o').

Second Muhammad is Muhammadu Thanni
Third Muhammad is Muhammadu Thalith

Yorùbá call Muhammadu Thanni= Sanni

Haven't you noticed that mostly Muslim Yorùbás or Yorùbás with Muslim father's are those that usually end up with the name Sanni and Lawal?

First Muhammad is Muhammadu Li-Awal. Yorùbás shorten it to Lawal. They shorten Thanni to Sanni. Most of the times there's no third Muhammad. Islam has been in Yorùbá land for almost 1000 years Yorùbás even call some Arabic letters with Yorùbá accent. So don't worry, Lawal is definitely of Arabic origin in Yorùbá tongue.
