Who Owns Port Harcourt? by goldenbrown: 8:09pm On Jan 04, 2013
The unusual silence between Okrikas and Ikwerres over the landlordship of PH broke recently when the Okrika presented their proposal for Oil Rivers state which also include Town Port Harcourt.. Over the years, the Okrikans have been known as trespassers who take advantage of every piece of land given to them by their neighbours covertin them to their permanent abode and even extending and then finally claiming their neighbours entire territory. This has also made the Okrikas become historical enemies with the Ogonis, Elemes, Ikwerres etc. The Okrikas have also laid claim to the entire Port Harcourt city where they were ones Tenants. As we all known that Town was a farmland belonging to Diobu, a single community in Ikwerreland before the city was developed and a port established in the then Eastern Nigeria. The Okrikas are Islanders, living in a small Island in Rivers state where they also caRryout their fishing activity in their ancient kingdom.how come they now own lands? The question now is "Who owns Port Harcourt?"

The point is, whoever owns land has the right of jurisdiction over it as well. The British entered into an agreement with both the Diobu and Okrika chiefs in 1913, and he Diobu chiefs subsequently entered into another agreement with the British solely in 1927. But legend has it that although the British first made contact with the Okrika due to geographic proximity as Okrikans are riverine, the British were forced to go further inland into Diobu territory be cause the Okrika land. Not suitable for the purpose of constructing a port and appurtenances. Chief Oju Daniel Kalio and Chief Gabriel Yellowe of Bakana (who served as District Interpreter in the 1913 agreement) led them to Chief Wobo of Diobu and other Diobu Chiefs and subsequently signed the agreement. The bone of contention is the actual pieces of land where some Okrikans reside were actually Ikwerre/Diobu land that was given as a gift or temporary abode by the Diobu people to the Okrikans in gratitude for the Okrikans bringing the white people to establish a port on Diobu soil.
