Please I need those with experience in this topic to help me with answers. There is this flooded chevrolet cobalt 2006 model I saw for sale its clearly stated that its a flooded car and sold as is. Though the seller never attempted to start the car. Am really tempted at 1500 dollars. Is it advisable I get the ride or I should stay clear?

Stay clear, Vehicle is sold as spares or repair !!! Not unless you are willing to take a gamble with $1500.00. There is always a better car around the corner !!!

I have plan to get one also, i have try to search for major issues of flood damage vehicle, Most fear are always for the future, fear of this or that might happen in the future. Based on my research you can try and avoid the one that were soak to dash board level, no the type of water the vehicle was immersed in. Sincerely i have read several post on the internet on flood vehicle and i have seen positive testimony mostly. Some complain about rusting but this has to do with the type of water (Salt water), few also complain about electronics malfunctioning. But if you are able to do necessary clean, am sure you won't experience all this except for the rusting parts, which might not even happen until two to three years. I plan to get one myself but for personal use sha. Most people are waiting for me to experiment..

Do not! I repeat!! Do not!!! buy a flooded car. The whole car has been immersed in water. that means you have to change engine and gear oil and might develop electrical fault also because the whole car has been submerged in water.

Usually the flooded cars usually come with a lot of dirt that are being deposited by the flood water, some areas that might be affected with the car can be hard to reach to clean up.

Advise, stay away from flooded cars.

So what happens to those who live in parts of Lagos susceptible to flood and whose cars get immersed in water when it rains so heavily in June/July? Do they throw their cars away?

Please educate me.

My guy, I have once witnessed a terrible flood that submerged cars right in their houses in Lagos. So what other type of hurricane style flooding are we talking about?

I wonder o! People's cars get flooded in places like Lagos every year. Do they throw the cars away? And we are talking about water with high salt and iron content too.

There is a reason why the cars are being sold cheap...and "as is". Salt water creates havoc with electronics and electronics control almost every operation in the car. Hurricane Sandy flood cars are being sold as junk...for either parts such as doors, windshields, etc or for their metal...scrap metal. ...mercedes..toyotas, etc...all in pristine appearance...all junk. Wonder why the owners are selling them for less than $1000.

After they buy flood damaged cars, don't worry. They come back on this thread or create another, crying for help !!!!

Nobody seems willing to address my question. In 2009, I was in FESTAC estate after a heavy downpour and I noticed that some compounds were submerged in water. What caught my eye was a clean jeep which was almost totally submerged in one compound.

My question is: what do owners of such cars do? Do they throw it away?

Well I don't know much about the disadvantages of buying a flooded car but what u wrote above is not a sufficient proof for anyone to go for it.. Unless the owner of those cars have actually confirmed to u that their cars have not been giving problems after flooding. A flooded car would still drive of course... but there may be more to the fact that its still driving.

Detail it very well and pass it on as "fairly used, clean jeep" to unsuspecting buyers

Buying a flooded car is usually a delicate decision and u have to be very careful, but atimes u could be lucky.
The last car I bought, a toyota camry 2007, was a flooded vehicle ffrom hurricane Irene, but till today thhe guy I sold it to has not made any complaints. If u have access to the car u want to buy, consider these following points -
- usually if it is a fresh water car, it is stated. That is usually at an advantage cos freshwater is not as bad as sea water
- before startinng the car, check the engine. Does it seem as if water entered it? Did the water get to the ECU(brain box)? Are all the fluids(engine oil, power steering fluid, etc) clear?
- does it drive? Make sure it runs and drives.

- watch out for funny odors in the car.

I hope this helps.

So becos the car drives that means it's in good condition? really?

Let's be clear: a flooded car is always a problem car. Wise buyers never give it a second look except for spares

Buy a floor car is ok I just bought a 2008 S550 for an insurance auction in NJ for $9,800 max I budget 5k to fix it that is the worst case senerio, car is about 40k dollars . When ever u buy floor car, always think the worst that u will buy a engine, chevy colbot engine 06 will run u about 400, u might not even need 1. Change the battery, remove the plugs, start crank the car, but don't start it, u don't want it to run. Everytime u crank it all the water from the head will busrt out. Next change all the fluids, oil, transmission, brake and powersteering fluid. U r good to go

flooded car is not good. My friends car was submerged in flood water at ejigbo, before he could get technician to fix the car it took him eight months after so many tries by different technicians until he was directed to tyre carriage at marshall kilo, yes they did try, fixed the car but after two months the car is not same again and as i type this he has abandoned the car. The car is nissan primera.

My answer makes sense since this is what most unscrupulous sellers in Nigeria will do. Full disclosure is an alien practice in Nigerian market

Canadian recently advised it's people not to buy flooded Sandy cars because they are classified as "non-repairable"

The only major damages flood can cause to a car is
1,Water in the Engine. If the water is drained out and a new engine oil in poured in you are go to go unless the engine had fault before the flood.
2.Electrical, the brain box is the major component if its damaged and it replaced, you are good to go.

Every other part of the car will get dried and the car would be like nothing happened.

This is a much better way to put across your point. However, we do know that "non-repairable" is an insurnce classification, and not based on the true state of the vehicle. In a flood situation, some cars will definitely be more damaged than others.

This brings us to another issue. WHO IS QUALIFIED TO HANDLE A FLOODED CAR? A roadside mechanic or a specialist car shop?

Was the repair checklist followed?

I had a car which was exposed to flood water in Port Harcourt. Though I got it out of the place after 30 mins, I had some jerking issues for 3 days after which the car readjusted itself and rode well till today. No mechanic work, nothing.

I guess the issue of flooded vehicles is one that we can write a dissertation on.

Hope you enjoy your car but here is the risk:

Flood-damaged vehicles can be extremely unsafe to drive because water — especially corrosive seawater — can compromise the electronic and computer systems that control every major system in a modern car, from the engine to steering, brakes and airbags.

Also, the cars could be contaminated by bacteria and unknown toxins from the mix of storm water and sewage from overloaded drainage systems. This very worrisome
