CASE STUDY:
Andrew Mupuya, Uganda. Founder, YELI
Age: 20

In 2008 the Ugandan government announced that it was considering a ban on the use of polythene plastic bags.
Andrew Mupunya, only 16 years old at the time, visualized an opportunity in paper bag production. He was still in high school, and his parents, who were both unemployed, were experiencing great difficulty in paying Mupuya’s school fees. With his savings and small monetary gifts from family and friends, Andrew was able to raise 36,000 Ugandan Shillings ($18) in startup capital- money he used to start making paper bags on a small scale.

In 2010 Andrew registered his company, Youth Entrepreneurial Link Investments (YELI), which is now the first local registered paper bag and envelope-producing company in Uganda. The business has grown significantly, and today it employs 14 Ugandans, including a 53 year-old father of eight.

YELI supplies paper bags and envelopes to local hospitals, small scale retail outlets, roadside sellers and local flour manufacturers. Within four years of its
launch, YELI has produced more than half a million paper bags. From the company’s revenues, Mupuya has been able to pay for his business bachelor’s degree at the prestigious Makerere University of Uganda, support his family and financially support his 14 staff and their families. But even more importantly, the young entrepreneur has given back. Through YELI’s social responsibility initiative, Andrew has trained over 500 Ugandans on how to make paper bags.

Through this initiative, 16 other smaller paper bag making operations have been established. Andrew plans to employ at least 60 people by 2015 and is gearing up to set up a paper bag making plant.

Andrew was the grand prize winner of the 2012 Anzisha Awards, an award which came with $30,000 in prize money. According to organizers of the Anzisha Prize, Andrew plans to expand his production capability and also build a paper recycling operation.

CASE STUDY: Brian Morgan, founder of Adventure Life

COMPANY: Adventure Life
FOUNDER: Brian Morgan, 35
LOCATION: Missoula, Montana
REVENUE: $11 million
EMPLOYEES: 16
START-UP YEAR: 1998
START-UP COSTS: $3,000 for two brochures and a laptop

In 1998, Brian Morgan traveled to Ecuador to learn Spanish and because someone he met in college once
told him it was beautiful. There he trekked in the
shadow of a volcano and rafted through the rain forest
to a soundtrack of monkey chatter and birdsong. It
would have been easy to put down roots in South
America: Morgan envisioned building a life there as a consultant. But heart and home were in his native
Montana. So, after some last-hurrah backpacking
around Bolivia and Peru, Morgan flew back to Missoula.
He hoped to land a job that would support regular visits south of the equator.

Then Morgan had an idea. "I thought I could put a
group of people together a few times a year and take
them to Ecuador -- show them the things that I found
most spectacular," he says. His nascent business,
Adventure Life, would lead travelers off the beaten path toward encounters with the land and culture. On some nights, clients would luxuriate in hot baths at a charming hotel. On others, they would rough it in a villager's plumbing-less home.

Morgan had just a couple thousand dollars in savings, though, so he accepted a software job and relegated start-up work to evenings and weekends. He printed 200 brochures advertising a single excursion and deposited them in coffee shops and sporting-goods stores near universities. No one called. Travel agencies waved him away. Concluding that travelers wanted more than one option, Morgan created a second brochure offering three itineraries with six departure dates. He also built a website, which looked like the work of an Amazonian howler monkey. Fortunately, a
graphic design student redesigned the site a few weeks later. Drawn by the brochure and the site, 100 people booked the first year.

:::How To Build a Business Like Adventure Life:::

Capital Requirement: N250,000 and above. The idea here is not owning yours but starting as an agent or affiliate to existing travel cruise business.

Families and Wealthy people usually take advantage of weekends to relax and have a nice time and most spend it with their loved ones together on a boat or ship cruise around the city or state where such rivers or seas are located.

Nothing sounds more exotic than having your cruise travel business. It immediately brings visions of white sands, blue beaches, luxury liners, pretty women, swaying palm trees and exciting lands. This is not gushing copy, but business need. If you want to set up cruise travel business you must first learn
everything about it.

How to Start:
Your research must obviously start on the net, where you find hundreds of travel agencies selling luxury cruises. Compare the rates being offered by them, and the ocean-based holidays that they are selling. Study the benefits each is offering before you decide to start your cruise travel business.

You should look at three points when starting a cruise travel business. The first is the location of the travel agency or shipping service that offers cruise travel. The second is what packages it sells. Would your customers be interested in buying these packages?
The third is your commission on every cruise that you sell. Based on this, you must become an affiliate of a travel agency or a selling agent of a shipping service.
Initially, you should become an affiliate of a large travel agency.

This will save you a lot of extra costs like buying your ticketing software or setting up your website. You can also collect promotional material from the travel agency and display it in your office. Not only this, you will be selling packages for a score of travel services, and not just one shipping service. You can always
set up your independent agency once you have learnt everything the business entails..

Costs and Income:
Your costs will be low if you decide to go with big travel agency. All that you need to pay is affiliation fees. After that you can use all the promotional material and software packages that
the travel agency uses. However, your income too will be less.
Instead of getting the full benefit you may get half the commission for every package that you sell. But then you should compare it with your start up costs.
You will still need an office, which should look slick. This means that you need to invest in either renting a smart office or converting one of your home rooms into an office. Either way you will need to spend a fairly large amount on the painting and furnishing of the office. You will also need two or three computers
connected to the net.

Publicity
A cruise travel home business needs to be promoted aggressively. You cannot sit at home and expect travelers to find you. Instead, you have to reach out to the traveling public with aggressive advertising. Billboards, fylers, newspaper page ads, internet, cheap local newspapers are just a few ideas on where you can advertise your business.
This will involve costs, and these costs should be
factored in the business plan. Otherwise, your cruise business will make a limping start.

HOW TO START EXERCISE BOOK PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA:

The market for exercise book is not in doubt, as note books are needed in our schools – primary, secondary, universities, college, polytechnics, offices etc.

EQUIPMENT Equipment includes ruling machine, cutting
machine and other accessories.

PRODUCTION PROCESS Production entails the procurement of the raw material paper, feeding the paper into the machine for ruling and cutting in the required sizes.
Production can be done in two ways depending on the capitals at the disposal of the investor.

First, Let me highlight the method of where the investor will produce without acquiring the necessary equipments that might be too expensive for small scale
investors. All the producer need to do is to buy the paper and contract the printing, ruling, cutting to an established printing organization. He pays the service charge and collects the finished products for distribution.

Any small investor can conveniently start the production of exercise book with as small as N65, 000 or more here in Nigeria. The quantity to be printed/produce will be determined by the capital at his disposal. Investors can also approach school owners for
the production of their school note books of various sizes and types.

Marketing of this product can be done through
book shops and other distributors etc. Willing investors can always find profitable entry point in this business.

Since, you are dealing with a branded exercise book, you have to be creative. Think of several things that
can attract a buyer and that should be what you
would have on the cover of your exercise book. Cutting machine is between N200 to N300 per
thousand, Final trimming is N70 per ream. Your
cost price is about N62,150. And you selling
price is N300 multiplied by N250 packs which is
N75,000. Hence, your profit of 3,000 units of
exercise book is N12,850. And when next you reprint you don't pay for cover page again and your profit rises to about N35,000 per 3,000 units. This is just an estimate though..

Technical Requirements For those interested in getting the machines for the Notebook Production business:

Machines can be sourced from India or China or even locally in Nigeria. Depending on the size of your investment and vision, and your anticipated production line, between N5 million to N200 million, you can put together what you need to start off your business. But whatever investment you are making must be hinged on the market demand of the product you intend producing and this you can get by doing some market survey, feasibility, business planning and all that.

Income Expectations:
There are about 6 million estimated primary and secondary school children in Lagos. For instance, if the average number of notebooks each child uses each term is 8, this means about 25 notebooks a year. Now if the average cost of these notebooks is just N30, that means a child in Lagos spends N750 on notebooks annually. The effective demand for notebooks yearly is therefore put at N5 billion. Imagine you capture one per cent of this business. We would be talking about N50 million demand every year. We have not factored in the notebooks bought by those in tertiary institutions, professionals, writers and other adults. For all you care, this business might be worth three times more in Lagos. Besides, this is just one category.

But before you embark in a small or large scale, do your research thoroughly or use consultants.

CASE STUDY: BECKY RYAN WILLIS (Candle making business)

Any successful business depends on filling a specific need or niche. Candles cover a variety of purposes, from practical to aesthetic. Becky Ryan-Willis of Country Keepsakes has discovered how to run a successful candle making business, offering an assortment of handmade candles and other items.

Entrepreneur Becky Ryan-Willis of Country Keepsakes knew that she wanted to start a niche business that would be practical to fill a need – but she also wanted to provide a product that people wanted. Prior to starting her business, she conducted thorough research into candle making, learning all she could about the process and the market for handmade, hand-poured candles. She decided to make soybean candles, as they were the “new thing” on the market at the time, and offered a cleaner burning, natural base.

Ryan-Willis also found a supplier in a neighboring state who offered most of the necessary supplies, meaning paying only one shipping cost for soybean wax flakes,
candle dyes, scents, and wicks. She also found a local business that sold different size jars and lids, another cost-saving step. In 2002, Ryan-Willis opened her business in a storefront near her home in Watkins Glen, New York. She started with four scents that
were popular at the time for “bakery” candles, including Cinnamon Buns, Vanilla Bean, Amish Carrot Cake, and Gingersnap Cookies. Today she makes a good living making candles.

HOW TO START A CANDLE PRODUCTION BIZ IN NIGERIA

Give an outlet to your creative faculties by making
beautiful candles at home and turn it into a profitable business by opening a home made candle store. Making candles at home is very very easy if you have free time available and you can make use of your skills. It can lead to a profitable business and the trends are changing now and people now prefer giving gifts that touch the heart with their beautiful designs and heart touching fragrances. You don’t even need lots of equipment to start a home made candle store. With only the basic things like wax, burner and wicks, you can start candle making at home, and as you make progress, you can buy advanced equipment and moulds for better and beautiful products.

This article will help you decide the best strategy for a good business and how to turn it into a successful enterprise. With their distinguished and sweet fragrances, candles, these days, are considered as one of the easiest ways to express one’s emotions. So, if you know how to make candles and have a creative side to your nature, its time to start a home made candle store and establish a business of your own.

Things to consider before starting Starting a business not only requires a certain amount of capital, it also requires careful planning and preparation. Planning and preparing
before actually starting a business are important as they provide an insight into what is needed to establish and run a successful business. While a home made candle store business does not require a big capital and heavy investment, it needs some planning and consideration on how to successfully launch it. Anyone who enjoys candle making and knows the art of moulding wax into different shapes and sizes with beautiful fragrances can get into this business. However, there are some important things to be considered before you start a home made candle store. Just making great smelling and beautiful looking candles at home is not the only thing important to start a candle store.

Some important things to be considered before home made candle making is turned into a full fledge candle store business are:
• Make sure your candles are unique and offer that distinctive touch which no other home made candle manufacturer offers. This will be one thing that will attract more customers as there is bound to be one home made candle shop in every area.
•Candle making process is not a complicated one,
but it requires time and attention to detail for safety reasons as well as product quality. Thus, you need to really focus on both the candle making as well as the quality control aspect when starting this business. You cannot expect to churn out the low quality or substandard products and expect them to sell like hot cakes.
•Decorate your candles well enough to make them look good and offer them as a gift pack. People love buying home made candles that not only look and smell good but are also very presentable as gifts.
•Candle making is a highly versatile craft; it encompasses unlimited opportunities for creativity. Candles can be dipped, moulded, rolled,
fused, layered, sculptured or experimented with any combination of processes from dyeing to paint or tinted. They can be scented or can have embedded materials such as beads or shells, coated or whipped to make them more beautiful and attractive for sale.
•You should have enough capital to start a home made candle store. While candle making supplies and scents do not cost much, running a shop can be expensive. You have to consider the shop rent, utility bills and other expenses till the profits start pouring in. For this, you need to have a good business plan that will give you an idea of what to expect when starting a home made candle store business. It is recommended that you give serious thought to all these things that are needed before starting a home made candle store business for a successful business venture.

Their demand in homes, restaurant, churches as well as gifts makes them a good business choice. Careful planning and complete information about operating things and managing them can help a lot in establishing and running a successful candle making store. The first thing to start a successful home made candle store is to find a cost effective supplier who can provide you candle making equipment and supplies at low cost. While a craft store is a good place to go when starting out and learning, as a businessperson, you will need to purchase from a wholesale operation in order to keep the business profitable and expenses low.

Make enough candles for a beginning stock in various designs, colours and scents as samples. As you are just starting the business, minimise the costs by creating candles to order, but you will need enough ready-made candles to demonstrate all the types you can make in order to get more business.
Determine the prices of candles very carefully. Assess the costs of your materials and your labour per candle and compare prices of similar products from other craft candle makers.
Don’t charge too much as overpricing can discourage them from buying if they can get the same type of candles at much affordable rates from somewhere else.
Create printed promotional materials of your candle store and play on the line that they are all home made to sooth the customers and light their lives. You will need high-quality photographs of candles and attractive business cards to promote your store. Consider hiring a photographer and graphic designer if you cannot do these things on your own. You can use these pictures on brochures and leaflets for advertising. This will all help in promoting your home made candles store and make it more successful. Promote your business among friends and family by giving them candles in gifts and ask them to spread the word about your store.

Another way to make your home made candles store more successful is by selling candles at craft fairs and small stalls in markets. They can really help you make good sales as people in such places are on the lookout for small but nice things to buy. You can also sell to other local shops apart from selling at your own candle store. Talk to other handicraft and arts suppliers such as salons, stationeries, among others if they are willing to display your candles for a small percentage of the sales amount.
Candle Production at home can cost about N20,000 - N50,000 to start

Candle Making On A Larger Scale:
Raw Materials
All the raw materials needed for candle production are cheaply available in Nigeria. They include paraffin wax, wick/thread, pigment, and stearic acid. Stearic acid is a solid saturated fatty acid from vegetable and animal fats and oil. A small quantity is required to
blend the paraffin wax. Stearic acid is available at the various vegetable oil making companies across the country.

Machinery/Equipment
The necessary machinery for candle production are in different sizes depending on the number of candle sticks required. They include:
(i) molding machines
(ii) paraffin wax boiler
(iii) automatic cooling system
(iv) industrial gas cylinder
(v) water tank.
All the machines can be locally fabricated. The moulding machines are in different sizes and the costs vary from one fabricator to another. The different sizes are:
24 sticks of candle making machine
50 sticks of candle making machine
100 sticks of candle making machine
200 sticks of candle making machine.
All the machines can be operated manually.

Production Process:
Candle making follows six simple production processes as enumerated below:
Stage 1:
A melting pan is filled with paraffin wax, stearic acid and pigment (if coloured candle is desired).
Stage 2:
Heat the whole mixture to about 120 degrees centigrade and not below 100 degrees centigrade. Too much or too low heat affects the quality and shrinking of the candles. Therefore, it must be ensured that the 120 oc maximum and 100oc minimum are maintained.
Stage 3:
Put wick into each candle mould.
Stage4:
Drain molten mixture into candle mould.
Stage 5:
Allow cooling of the mixture in the mould by passing water through the surface of the mould.
Stage 6:
Manually drive a piston plate into mould to bring out the end product.

Market:
The end product of the production process is packed in nylon bags according to already predetermined numbers and packaged in cartons ready for the market. Candle is a mass consumption item widely used for lighting and illumination in households, churches and other religious houses, hotels and restaurants. The demand for candles is on the increase in recent times due to incessant power outage across the country. Artistic and decorative candles also have
very good market potentials.

Profitability:
Great profit abounds in this business as research has shown that a 200 per cent return on investment is achievable in the first year of operation which guarantees short pay back period.

Interested investors can contact the writer for a cost-benefit analysis of the project.

Investment Cost Estimates N
Pre-operational expenses 50,000
Factory Premises 50,000
Machinery & Equipment 100,000

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY IN TOILET TISSUE PRODUCTION

Introduction
The toilet paper manufacturing business has been reported as being one of the fastest growing manufacturing industries in Africa today.it is a soft tissue paper used in homes, offices, schools, hotels etc. to maintain personal hygiene after human laxative or other organic processes. However, it can also be used for other purposes such as absorbing spillage and
decorative purposes. the product differs in texture
from other tissue, and is formulated to decompose in septic tanks, whereas some other bathroom and facial tissues do not.

Benefits/Advantages -
Cash business (depending on market sector, this can be up to 100%).
- Ability of producing SABS approved toilet rolls.
- Simple manufacturing process.
- Easy administration (very few product
lines and variations).
- High demand for product.
- Easy to market.

THE OPPORTUNITIES
In order to encourage local production of the
product and create the much needed employment.
The federal government of Nigeria banned the importation of finished toilet roll, serviette and face tissue in 2004. though local production has long commenced, the demand is still very high,
superseding the supply by wide margin.

About 800 million units of the product are required annually by Nigerians out of which local production can only meet about 105 million units. this wide margin in supply provides investment opportunity for savvy investors like you and I to exploit.

Opportunities also exist for the exportation of the
local finished product to other countries.
Nevertheless, one could also make money recycling waste paper into jumbo reels used as raw material for the production of toilet rolls.

THE PRODUCTION PROCESS
Wood Pulp and Dye
The first step in the process of making soft tissue
paper is creating paper pulp, which can be generated from recycled materials or new ones. Once the fibers are mixed with the wood pulp, they are bleached and then washed. the fiber is then placed in a mixing tank where the manufacturer adds any components that may be needed, such as dye. Tissue paper used for
household purposes is normally dyed white, while decorative paper can be mixed with an assortment of dye colors. Pressing Once the pulp is ready, it is pressed through two pressure rolls so that a majority of the moisture is squeezed out. Sometimes the pulp might be
pressed only between two rolls for thicker paper,
and other times it may undergo the pressure of
multiple rolls for thinner paper. this leaves the pulp in a manageable consistency for the next step, which will completely dry it out and scrape it down to a thin sheet. Creeping The pulp is processed with a Yankee dryer, a drying cylinder heated by steam. this dryer puts
the pulp through a process called creping; hence the term “crepe paper.” the hood above the roller dries the pulp with a forceful heat as the roller turns and a fine blade scrapes the tissue down to the soft, desired thickness. the tissue does not get completely scraped away, because the roller is first sprayed with adhesives.

Reeling and Cutting
The long length of paper is reeled and cut with a
machine, such as the Advantage Soft Reel, into
appropriate lengths and sections after it is dried and thinned. throughout the process of making soft tissue paper, there are times when the fibers are exposed to extreme heat. To keep the fibers from igniting, technology such as Met so’s Advantage Wet Dust is used to keep eliminate air born dust from the area and keep the tissue machines clean.

THE PRODUCTION PLANT
The toilet roll production plant is a stationary one
to be sourced locally. the plant is made up of the core cutting machine, core gluing machine, jumbo reel winding machine and band saw cutting machine.
The plant would be sourced from an experienced fabricator of plants in Nigeria, hence, the durability of the plant and spare parts would notbe a problem.

Toilet Roll business, is a big business and a
secret money spinner. Do you know that a unit cost per Toilet Roll cost just 15.00 Naira (Fifteen Naira), and you will sell between 150 to 200 Naira for Jumbo sizes,
which means 85% profit per tissue.

All you need is for this business are
1) Toilet Roll Rewinding Machine, fabricated in Nigeria and very efficient too, 180,000,00
(One Hundred and Eighty Thousand Naira)
2) Toilet Roll Cutting Machine, fabricated in Nigeria, 100,000,00 ( One Hundred Thousand Naira) both machines with installation cost.
3) Giant Jumbo Tissue Roll, either imported or made in Nigeria, very good quality at the rate of 120,000 (One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira) per ton.
4) Printed Flex package,
Beautifully designed eyes catching and very attractive water proof packets will cost 100,000( One Hundred
Thousand Naira) Only.

Total cost about N500,000

You can make a whole lot of profit from inside your home...

CASE STUDY:

EDUCATIONAL TRAINING SERVICES:
Today in Nigeria, we have plenty of Youths who write external exams in order to gain admission into tertiary institutions. Some of these exams to be written include:
WAEC
GCE
NECO
JAMB
POST UME
SCHOLARSHIP EXAMS
etc.
And the beautiful thing about these exams is that they are spread across the 12 calendar months in a year, and there will always be people who will write these exams. There is a category of these set of people who are writing for the first time, and another who are attempting over and over again.

Setting up an educational training centre is a big way to harvest in these categories of people. A well planned publicity, a good location and standard trainers are mainly what you need to get people interested in your centre.

Costs:
A fairly large hall may cost you about N20,000 a month in a busy city.
N40,000 or more will construct you chairs and desks to meet about N200 seaters.
N90,000 may pay 6 teacher's salary for a month.

So for the first month, total Start cost may be: N150,000
If a your charge per student is N1500 per month, then your total realizable amount Will be N300,000
and profit is about N150,000

Besides, you wont need to keep constructing chairs after the first month, and you can do other services like sales of Jamb form, WAEC, neco etc forms and registration.

CASE STUDY: UGOCHUKWU OKOLI, CAR WASH BUSINESS

Recognising the immense opportunity of the gradually growing car wash industry, Ugochukwu Okoli, 25, a graduate of Igbinedion University, and CEO of Snypa’s Coozii Car- wash/Shisha, started his own car wash business thus adding to his chain of small-scale businesses that include Snypas CD World, Snypas Drivers Lodge, buildings on lease, which have been put out to the public on a very classy structure, but average pricing.

Talking on how he raised the capital to start this business, Okoli said, “When I set out to do a business I always tend to give out the perfect structure for the said business. I always give out the best and to bring out my idea to reality I draft a quotation on all it takes to set it up and I save towards that goal.” In a bid to achieve excellence and leave customers with a high feeling of satisfaction,

Okoli in an interview with BusinessDay, said, “I created the perfect relaxation outfit for the car wash business, with the perfect outdoor relaxing chairs, barbeque stands, fresh fruits juice machines, cold drinks, shisha and light music to put your mind to relax while you wash your car, this is a limit no car wash has reached.”

Snypa’s coozii car wash/shisha initiative came in 2010, “I had a large space in front of a building I own and after doing a feasibility study, I realised the space would be perfect for a car wash.”

STARTING A CAR WASH BUSINESS IN NIGERIA

Do you want to explore some business opportunities while you are still in paid employment? You probably have considered all businesses except car wash.

Car wash business is a daily income business which is not limited to a particular set of people in the society. It neither requires any expertise nor degree. Anybody can start up and earn more than N10,000 daily or N300,000 monthly provided you follow the rules.

However, as easy as the business seems to appear, there are basic things you put in place before kick-off. Before starting a car wash business:

FINANCE: Why finance first? Finance is put first because it is the sole of the business. But you do not need millions to start. Get the necessary equipment but don’t be on a low profile.

FEASIBILITY STUDY: This is an important aspect to remain in business. Carry out your detailed feasibility study which you can do yourself without the service of an expert. In doing this, visit other people doing the same business to ask and see how it is being run. Ask
for their challenges and how it is managed.

LOCATION: Getting the right LOCATION is as key as the capital. Location determines the life span of a car wash, so in order to keep the business running consider these things;
1. it’s advisable to buy your own land and not rent.
2. Don’t settle in a remote area.
3. Do not get a swampy land in order not to discourage your customers especially during raining season.
4. Reduce or avoid competitors on the same road.
5. Make sure the road is a busy one.

GOVERNMENT APPROVAL: Do not start any business without getting the company registered and get the necessary papers from various agencies if there is any in order to avoid embarrassment. Get yourself
registered in the car wash association and also, get the agency in charge of inspection to inspect the area if it’s good for the business.

WORKERS : Get smart and enthusiastic boys to do the washing for you. From experience, they are placed on
commission, because of their unstable nature and to engender productivity. Getting a TRUST WORTHY manager is also necessary.

WATER: Without water there is no car wash, this is the soul of any car wash business. It’s not cost effective to buy water because you need water like fishes in the sea do. It’s either you dig well or get your borehole done but borehole is preferable because a well will
dry up during dry seasoning. So, borehole is best recommend.

RESERVOIR: This is used to store water. Two of these are enough for you in a day so, you won’t have to be pumping water or waiting for power supply.

STEAMING MACHINE: Steaming machine is used to wash the engine and radiator of the car. It is either you get the hot water steaming machine which the cheapest is around N200,000 or go for the cold water steaming machine and it goes for N60,000 minimum. The hot
water steaming machine only needs power supply while the cold water needs petrol to work.

VACUUM CLEANER: This is used to clean the interior part of the car and also used to remove sand from the car. You can get the cheapest vacuum cleaner for N20, 000 or N25, 000.

POWER: It is advisable to get power supply because using generating set will cost you more.

RAM: This is built with cement and block and it is used to wash the underneath of the car. It helps to avoid rust under their cars. It is important you have this because customers who like this service may go elsewhere.

CHEMICALS: This is used alongside the steaming machine. You apply the chemical to the engine and
radiator before washing and it is used to clean up rust.

DETERGENTS: Use car soap and not just any detergents in order not to run into unnecessary debts because some soap might be too harsh on the paint. There is liquid car wash soap in the market now. Find out
which will make the vehicle wax and glow after wash.

SPONGE AND FOAM: Sponge is used to wash the body of the cars while foam is used for new cars or newly painted cars.

TOWEL: To dry the body of the car after washing.

BUCKETS: This is used to mix the detergent with water.

HOLES: This is used to bring water from the storage to clean the soap from the car.

BRUSH: This is used to wash the tyres of the car.

NOTE: The location is the very important thing in this business and the only environmental factor is during raining season which will bring less customers. The hazard in the job is the chemical and the hot water
steaming while getting a TRUST WORTHY manager may be challenging. But if you are being cautious enough, it turns out to be a success.

THE IDEA: HOW TO START A WATERLESS CAR WASH BUSINESS

It may sound impossible, but it is real. The technology has been in existence for some years outside the country, but has only come to light recently in Nigeria, and now is the best time to cash in. We are talking about washing cars without water, an innovative concept that the ‘waterless’ mobile car wash service is built around.

Mr. Dunsin Titilayo, the brains behind Sparkle Key Nigeria Ltd, said that it is actually possible to wash cars without water. His company showcases a car wash kit consisting of cleaning agent, waxing and a special towel, which anyone who is trained in the use of the kit can effectively wash vehicle in about 40 minutes, without the encumbrances of buckets, hoses and the like, in a regular car wash set up. Mr. Titilayo said his concern was to make it convenient for car owners so that they would not have to disrupt their busy schedules or spend extra hours waiting in line for their cars to be washed at a car wash.

With a start up capital of just N10,000, Titilayo said that unemployed youths, including fresh school graduates, could make it big in the waterless car wash business. He stated that the gender bias in the regular car wash business is removed, as virtually anybody could handle the equipment. This car wash kit is light weight and highly mobile.

Washing cars tightly parked in any parking lot outside an office, church, mosque, shopping or event centre will be no difficult task with this kit. He said that this method of washing cars would be preferable because it leaves the paint on the body of a vehicle without any scratches.

The Sparkle Key boss also stated that ideally, water used in washing cars should never be acidic, as this would affect the paint work on a vehicle. “Water used for washing cars should have a pH of around seven, which indicates that the water is neutral. But this kind of water is rare. The challenges of finding a source of water with such a suitable ph level are clearly overcome when using ‘waterless’ washing method,” he said. “In going into this business, there will never be a need to sink a borehole, or source for water from stream in which harmful chemicals may have dissolved that will harm the look of your customer’s vehicle,“ explained Mr. Titilayo. Speaking on the profitability of the business, Mr. Titilayo said that a set of cleaning agents costs N3,500. This set is sufficient to handle 20 washes. If one washes up to 10 cars in a day and charges N500 for each, he or she would have made N5,000 that day.

Continuing at this rate, the next day will have provided sufficient profit for one’s efforts and enough revenue to buy more. With proper management and marketing skills anyone can build a viable business organisation from this service. Also in this business, a team of three can be built: one person who handles marketing and two people who actually carry out the job. This time, not just cleaning the exterior of the car should be the only service rendered. By purchasing a vacuum cleaner with a small generator to power it, a one can handle the cleaning of the entire interior of a car. “At this stage, your charges will definitely be higher. Your charges will be up to N1,500 for each car you handle,” Mr. Titilayo said. “All that will be needed as extras would probably be a car to carry the vaccum cleaner around and meet customers on time,” he added.

As always, marketing is key to make this new form of business sell, one must be ready to do some form of publicity to create awareness of this business and it advantages. Fliers and small business cards will definitely come in handy. “An extra advantage of the waterless car wash method is that it waxes the car, makes it shine and protects it, leaving your car with a smooth velvelty look,” Mr. Titilayo said. ‘Waterless’ car wash methods have been noted to be truly eco-friendly, the products are bio-degradable which means they do no harm to the environment.

This innovation might just become a big hit as the world’s quest for green processes and enviromental-friendly solutions intensifies by the day.
