Edo State Governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has accused the police high command of having a hand in the gruesome murder of his former principal private secretary, Late Comrade David Olaitan.

But the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar quickly distanced himself from having any hand in the murder of Olaitan, saying that the police only investigated the matter while it was the duty of the court to decide the culprits.

Oshiomhole, who made the allegation yesterday during the official unveiling of the book, ‘Code of Conduct and Professional Standards for Nigeria Police Officers,’ urged President Goodluck Jonathan to order the dismissal and subsequent prosecution of a certain Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police and other officers alleged to have a hand of the man’s killing.

The Edo State governor who delivered the keynote address was moved to tears when he digressed from the topic of the event to register his disapproval of the shoddy manner the police conducted investigation into his secretary’s murder.

According to him, the police left the actual culprits in the murder to arrest a civil rights activist who, he said, had no hand in the murder. He also averred that the State Security Service (SSS) which also investigated the murder came up with the actual culprits, and wondered why the police compromised their investigation.

“I am aggrieved over the murder of my private secretary and the way your men trivialised the investigation,” he said. “In my view (I’m saying it knowing that the vice president is here - he should take the message to Mr President), my private secretary was murdered in cold blood and, in fact, a DIG supervised that investigation because even the president publicly ordered a full investigation into the issue.

“Number two, they (police) wrote a report, which is their own report under their signature, in which they said and I like to quote: ‘that the man who was involved in the murder was already under police detention at the time my secretary was murdered; the weapon that was used for the murder was used for armed robbery earlier, recovered and kept under police custody at the time my private secretary was urdered.

‘So the man who murdered my secretary was in police custody, the gun he used was with police custody - and this is the findings of the police. So the only conclusion that can be reached is that the police ordered the killing of my private secretary.”
