Court Remands 15 Russians In Prison Over Illegal Arms Importation by Nobody: 2:14am On Jan 12, 2013
A Lagos Chief Magistrate Court sitting on Friday ordered that the 15 Russians allegedly to have illegally imported arms and ammunitions into the country be remanded in prison custody until the 28th of January for their arraignment.

The presiding magistrate; Mrs. Adeola Adedayo ordered the remand following a remand request made by Mr. Effiong Asuquo; a Superintendent of Police from Special Fraud Unit.

Those remanded include Zhelyazkov Andrey, 53, Savchenko Sergrey, 36, Chichikanov Vasily, 49, Varlygin Igor, 48, Komilov Alexandr, 32, Lopatin Alexey, 38, Baranovskly Nikolay, 50, Mishin Pavel, 31, LLia Shubov, 33, and Dmitry Bannyrn, 40.

Others include Alexander Tsarikov, 44, kononov sergel, 44, Korotchenko Andrey, 23, Vorobev Mikhail, 40 and Stepan Oleksuik, 52.

In the request for remand, Asuquo stated that Zhelyazkov Andrey who is the master and captain of MV Myre Seadiverwere reasonably suspected to have committed the offences of illegal possession of fire arms and ammunitions on board of the said vessel and illegally entered into the Nigerian territorial waters between September and October 2012.

On the ground for the request for the remand, the police said upon the search of the vessel by the Nigerian Navy, a cache of arms namely 14 assorted AK47 with 3, 643 ammunition and 20 Benelli MRI 20mm barrel riffles with 4, 995 ammunitions were discovered without license or authorization of carrying or possessing the said arms.

The police also said the remand request of the suspects was made for the national interest and safety of the nation and its citizens, so as to serve as a deterrent to others who might want to undermine the security of the country.

Another officer also attached to the Special Fraud Unit Ikoyi Lagos, Sergeant Amu Iseoluwa averred that the investigation revealed the said vessel and its 15 crew members were in the water territory of Nigeria since 20th September, 2011, on the pretext of replenishment and crew change but remained within the nation’s territorial waters without notification of any relevant government agencies and when they were intercepted and arrested by the Nigerian Navy, the ship’s agent refused to declare the presence of firearms on board the ship and the ship’s presence in Nigerian waters to any relevant government agencies.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. Adeola Adedayo granted the remand request of the police and ordered that the 15 Russians be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the matter till 28th of January.
