while African leaders are still wasting and delaying time in helping Mali to fight her rebels france has already started the initiative and taken action, why is it that African leaders are always slow to react to matters of urgency .

Government forces in Mali say they have regained territory from Islamist militants following air strikes by the French military.

Malian officials said they had taken back the strategic central town of Konna, which rebels had secured just a day earlier as they pushed south.

The news came hours after France announced it had begun military operations in support of Mali's army.

Armed groups, some linked to al-Qaeda, took control of northern Mali in April.

The Islamists have sought to enforce an extreme interpretation of Islamic law in the area.

Regional and western governments have expressed growing concern about the security threat from extremists and organised crime.

Nigeria denies sending troops to Mali

LAGOS: Nigeria has not sent troops to Mali despite claims that it was backing the country's army in an offensive against Islamists who control the country's north, a defence spokesman said Saturday.

"We have not sent anything," Colonel Mohammed Yerima told AFP. "Nothing. We have responded that we are going to send troops."

Yerima could not provide further details on when troops might be deployed or how many. Nigeria has previously spoken of sending 600 troops to take part in an African force to help Mali's army win back the country's north.

A spokesman for Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Mali's army said Nigerian and Senegalese forces were involved in Friday's offensive which was backed by French air power. Dakar has however also denied having any troops there.

The UN Security Council has approved a 3,000-strong force, but it is not expected to be ready to deploy before September.

The chairman of the west African bloc ECOWAS on Friday authorised the immediate deployment of troops, but gave no further details on how or when it would occur.

In a statement on Saturday, the head of the ECOWAS commission said "measures will be taken to implement this decision."

Nigeria has the largest military in the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States, but it is also battling an insurgency by Islamist extremist group Boko Haram in its northern and central regions.

The Islamists' advance in Mali has raised fears that the country could provide a safe haven for Al Qaeda-linked extremists, posing a threat to the region as well as Europe and beyond.

Maybe we sent our special forces unit and its suppose to be a secret. Remember that it is being alleged that Boko Haram also have a base there.

Comrade, the French will have to tout the involvement of a "coalition of the willing", even if none exists on the ground, for domestic consumption.

Nigeria sends air force technical team, commander to Mali
By by M.J. Smith (AFP) – 1 hour ago

LAGOS — Nigeria has sent an air force technical team and the commander of a planned African-led force to Mali to assist the country's military as it battles Islamists, a presidency spokesman said on Saturday.

The confirmation of Nigerian military personnel on the ground comes after French air power helped Mali mount an offensive against the Islamists who control the country's north and who have been seeking to push further south.

However, it was not yet clear when a planned 3,000-strong African-led force could be sent despite 15-nation west African bloc ECOWAS giving its go-ahead on Friday for the immediate deployment of troops.

The Islamists' advance in Mali has raised fears that the country could provide a safe haven for Al Qaeda-linked extremists, posing a threat to the region as well as Europe and beyond.

Nigeria has the largest military in the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States, but it is also battling an insurgency by Islamist extremist group Boko Haram at home in its northern and central regions.

"The technical staff from the Nigerian air force are already on the ground in Mali," Nigerian presidency spokesman Reuben Abati told AFP. "They are not fighters; they are technical staff.

@bookface,

You got there before me, thanks.
The first casualty of any war is usually the truth, so there are no real surprises France has already started indulging in subterfuge.

“The technical staff from the Nigerian air force are already on the ground in Mali,” Nigerian presidency spokesman Reuben Abati told AFP. “They are not fighters; they are technical staff.”

He added the commander of the planned African-led force, a Nigerian, was also in Mali.

A Nigerian defence spokesman had earlier said the country had not sent any troops to Mali. Abati maintained the statement was “factually correct to the extent that the Nigerian troops are not yet on the ground. The foot soldiers are not yet there.”

If the so-called Malian rebels are fighting for an independent nation out of Mali, the moronic jerks such as French and other Africans should stay away from the debacle. The people fighting for independence have every right to do so. I will always support the deconstruction of 1884 European partition of Africa.

it would be naive to claim that Nigeria has not been present there, yet wrong to claim that Nig troops hav been there. Knw that before the technical plan was drafted and submitted to UN Security Council, extensive "recce" was done alongside on d spot covert assessments. beyond then, i readiness for subsequent deployment, more tedious recce is embarked upon; it is the basis for drawing up the finel Order of Battle, "ORBAT". so in essence, Nigerian military and intelligence operatives have been crawling around the terrains of Mali since long before today, but no combat group is on site yet, hence the denial.

LoL! This reeks of ignorance. The Malian rebels are the Nigerian version of Boko Haram and an extension of Al-qaeida. You know, the same group of people who will like to impose Islamic faith and Shariah laws on the rest of the world? Now if this fits perfectly into your definition of "fighting for independence", then you may as well carry banners of protest against the federal government's war on Boko Haram. Otherwise, would it be too much if i ask you to shut the f**k up and stop spewing so much tosh on the forum? Thank you. smiley

This sounds very nice, your "military speak" adds to the flavour.

So, "Nigerian operatives have been crawling around the terrains of Mali"...and meanwhile, somewhere else, Islamist rebels kept advancing and gaining territory up to a point where the Malian government yelled for help and it took the french more than 3000 km away and a single night of airstrikes to halt the advancement? So what's the point to all the extensive "recce"?

I guess ignorance oozes from your post. If the reasons Boko Haram is fighting Nigerian government include carving out independent nation from Nigeria, I shall contribute to its coffer. You are entitled to your bloody opinions including nonsensical idiocy about certain “people who will like to impose Islamic faith and Shariah laws on the rest of the world”. What a drooling fool.
