A dermatologist at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Hospital, Osogbo, Akinlolu Siyanbola, has warned against the use of bleaching products, saying they could cause kidney failure.

Mr. Siyanbola gave the warning in Osogbo, Osun State.

He said consistent usage of bleaching products over a long period could make the kidney to fail, adding that it could also cause diabetes.

The dermatologist said bleaching products could also cause osteoporosis (loss of bone density), psychiatric manifestation and systemic hypertension among other ailments. He said some bleaching products contain chemical agents that reduce the activities of the natural cell which protects the skin from the adverse effects of sunlight.

The agents, he said, change the skin to occhronus, manifested in different colours of the body.
