Why We Couldn't Pay For Live Transmission Of AFCON 2013 – Maku

The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku on Monday said that Nigeria’s inability to broadcast live matches from the African Nations Cup was in the interest of sports development in the country.

Maku said this during an inspection of ongoing work at the Inland River Port in Oguta, Imo.

The minister, who apologised to Nigerians for the blackout on live matches of the tournament, said that the demand of the rights holder was highly exploitative.

According to Maku, “it is necessary for Nigeria to call their bluff because they were not willing to bring down the price despite efforts by the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON)

“All efforts made by BON through the agent LC2 did not work. From eight million euros, they came to six million then 4.5 million Euro; so you can see that it is not a scientific charge, it is a kind of casino pricing.

“BON decided that this year, Nigeria should call the bluff of this agent and maybe next time the Confederation of African Football will be more sensitive when it comes to hiring of agents to vent the broadcasting rights of the African Nations Cup,” he said.

The minister said that Nigeria would no longer tolerate agents who would turn the country into a cash cow.

“Nigeria cannot be a cash cow for every agent to come and exploit. We have to call the bluff of people that want to abuse our generosity.

“We are making this collective sacrifice for a better future. We will work with BON to agree on a new formula for these prices and we will want to see that what we pay should not be different from any other African country.”

He said that broadcast stations would have ran at a loss because no telecommunications company would have advertised knowing that this year’s Nations Cup was sponsored by Orange, also a telecommunications company.

He said that the Federal Government had offered to augment the cost if BON could negotiate a fair price but the agents said they could not move from the price tag they were offering.

“BON advised government not to intervene.

“They said they will not want the government to use public money to any agent because it is not good to our country and the agent has not treated Nigeria fairly.”

He however assured that Nigerians would get a better deal in 2014.

Several efforts by BON to strike a deal with the right holders, LC2 did not yield any result. (NAN)

It's even good the price was too high, they saved my Nigerians from developing high BP, Imagine Nigeria losing 3 - 0 to Ethiopia, that would be suicidal for many fans!

gettin our facilities in order, makin sports more profitable &getting d priv, sector involved in nigerian football will set us up stage, enable us win hosting rights, &we wldnt have to beg for broadcasting rights. Dis is all as a result of our inability to plan long term, instead, we want short term solutions

Because probably you've been agreeing to the other deals. And most especially the key players in Nigeria (telecom coys) pulled out because of orange.

Which 2014 is the minister talking about? The next Cup of Nations will be in 2015 not 2014.
It looks like he is using the old schedule.

It's like a parent telling his child he didn't buy a Xmas present because the prices where too high! He wants to teach them a lesson so next time the prices won't be that high.

Meanwhile, present pikin no see, money too pikin no see. How do you expect your child to feel?

You would have paid for at least 2 matches with the approved money if na only 2 matches we fit afford! angry

I understand this people steal our money but i think this is a good decision .

they have been conspiracy theories too.

Dstv showing the match on select channel expecting it to be ss2 or ss3. if you dont have money for dstv you will surely buy gotv just for afcon.

Thinking of it in that sense no problem. But I know the people who made this decision were just being selfish. If not, where is the money that was budgeted for it? Nonsense! Its our selifishness that can make other nations exploit us any how. They know that they are dealing with crooks. Thank God I'm watching eurosport

Why wont BON call their bluff?

If a whole NEPA could have generator sets and i better pass my neigbour,
who says BON offices dont have dstv's in their offices to watch the matches live?

Nigerians should nt just blame the uncaring govt, blame poverty as well.
Poverty and the in-ability to afford dstv made a lot of Nigerians unable to call the govts bluff and hook up to dstv.
Poverty denies u the ability to afford subsititues when d govt dont care.

Re: The Price For Live Transmission Of AFCON Was High - Maku by Esiere: 2:50pm On Jan 22, 2013
The pricing obviously will be based on population. A leopard can't change its skin. A bad government can't think about masses first and put as second their own interests. Mr Maku enjoys every second of the AFCON because he has access to paytv . Go to Aso Rock, they are enjoy it. Mr Maku should stop insult the masses sensibilities. If it were to be something that will benefit them...they won't think twice befoe doing it. Mr Maku keep fooling yourself. Be truthful to yourself....is the money up to what you alone stole last year. Close to 170 million are meant to watch it.
