EFCC arraigns Rep for issuing dud cheques

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday arraigned the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security, Aliyu Gebi, for allegedly issuing dud cheques of about N120.5m to his lender.

The EFCC alleged that Gebi, a Congress for Progressive Change member representing Bauchi Federal Constituency, obtained the credit facility from Musty Petroleum Limited.

The lawmaker was arraigned for a 13-count charge before Justice Abba Bello Muhammad of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, sitting in Apo, Abuja.

The anti-graft agency accused him of issuing 13 dud cheques in favour of the complainant, Musty Petroleum Limited, an offence contrary to and punishable under section l (b) (i) of the Dishonoured Cheque (offences) Act, 2004, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.

When the charges were read to him in the court, Gebi pleaded not guilty.

His lawyer, Mr. Babatunde Oyefeso, thereafter moved a bail application, asking the court to grant him bail on self-recognition.

He told the court that, before the arraignment, the lawmaker had been on an administrative bail granted him by the EFCC.

Prosecution counsel, Mohammed Bello, did not oppose bail application.

He noted that Gebi had already deposited his diplomatic passport with the commission, but he prayed the court to take note of the gravity of the offence and impose strict conditions that would make the lawmaker attend trial.

But, ruling on the application, Justice Bello Mohammed insisted that the accused person be allowed to continue with the bail conditions earlier granted him by the anti-graft agency.

“The EFCC was aware of the seriousness of the offence committed by the accused person before granting him an administrative bail on the light terms and condition,” he said.

Consequently, the court adjourned to February 19 to commence trial

its only the gullible that would believe the propoganda of other parties that is only PDP that is corrupt. almost all polititians if not all are corrupt! The spot light is on PDP cause is the ruling party NOW!the oppositions are worst than them.

Saw the dude on AIT the other day waxing lyrical about accountability, good governance and nationhood.....wetin come happen?

Is this not the same guy who sm few days ago was shouting on AIT, talking about good governance, new young leadaship in d north, anti-corruptn as a CPC member; castigating d FG as bn 'most corrupt' ever who Nigerians had to kick out and almost insulting d President why he was at it.. yet he was a common DUD thief and 419er all along, LOL..... he too is an Activist

Dat is how it is with most of us here, we castigate and critisize govt but if given a budget of 5million Naira we will throw away caution. Seems its a Nigerian problem of greed and financial indiscipline.So what's d way out?
