Asaba—A young man, one Emmanuel Michael was Tuesday, sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour by a Chief Magistrate Court in Asaba, Delta State, for stealing gold earrings worth N25,000.

Presiding Chief Magistrate, Sylvester Ehikwe, in sentencing him stated that “he does not deserve mercy as burglary is next to armed robbery.”

Upon arraignment, the convict immediately pleaded guilty to the two-count charge preferred against him and began to weep in the dock, saying “I was hungry.”

The prosecution stated that the accused “on the February 1, 2013 at back of NTA Asaba in the Asaba Magisterial District did break into the house of one Okechukwu Uheghbu and stole a pair of gold earrings and its pendant valued at N25,000, property of Mr. and Mrs. Okechukwu Uheghbu and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 411(1) of the Criminal Code Cap C21 Vol. 1 Law of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006.”

Why didn't the judge just order a caterpillar to run him over? He heard how his brother handed down a 2year jail term to someone who embezzled pension fund and in his opinion he felt that someone who stole 25K worth of gold should be jailed for 5years! SMH. Sadly many of these judges receive bribes and still hand down such harsh judgements. Smells of hypocrisy, if you ask me.

LESSON: In this country, it seems that people are encouraged to steal biiiggggg, so that when you are caught, you use an insignificant part of the loot to settle "all that need to be settled" and go home to enjoy your loot. Neat arrangement, abi? But if you you are a small time thief, be ready to have your backside rot in jail, sorry.

A hungry man was sentenced to 5yrs 4 stealing earrings while a govnmt official stole police pension fund worth of 25billion naira and was sentenced to 2yrs in prisonment wth option of 750k,are the laws of these country meant 4 poor?, what a shame in judiciary.

I think the justice in Naija is upside down. If you steal millions, no jail...but some couple court drama.

Why cant the guy go to the CBN to break? The judge is not happy because he did not still like the Chairman of Police Pension Fund or like Ibori.
You must steal like Honorable members before you can get good judgement. Steal like Bank--Ole form Ogun state or Remi Fani. You can see him still talking and living big.

The boy committed offence punishable under section 213 sub section 14 of the act of stealing and is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment for stealing only 25,000 naira worth of gold.

The "i was hungry part" saddened and made me laugh at the same time. In as much as there is no excuse for theft...the judge should have given him some community service and probation term since he had to prior criminal record. Anybody up for a judicial review?
