Sokoto, Kebbi others to have excessive rainfall in 2013- Meteorological Agency

Nigerian Metrological Agency warns of heavy rain fall in some parts of the North

There might be excessive rainfall in Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger and Kwara states, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET, predicted on Friday.

For the rest of the country, however, there will be normal rainfall, the agency said.

The Director-General of NIMET, Anthony Anuforom, made the information known at the public presentation of the 2013 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction, SRP, and Nigeria Climate Review Bulletin in Abuja.

He said the rainfall pattern in most parts of Nigeria is likely to be similar to that of 2012.

“However, some areas in the North-western parts of the country, which also fall within the catchment area of River Niger, the total rainfall predicted for 2013 may exceed that of 2012.
“Rainfall for 2013 is predicted to be normal over large areas of the country. The expected changes in the annual rainfall are well below normal in Abeokuta and above normal over Ibadan and Yelwa areas.
“The predicted rainfall for the Northwest areas of Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara and environs is likely to be above normal in comparison to 2012,’’ he said.

Mr. Anuforom advised relevant authorities to use NIMET’s updates issued regularly to control possible adverse impacts.

He said the forecast is not automatic and could change due to climate change.

Mr. Anuforom said the volume of rainfall for the year would range from 420 cubic metres spread over 120 days in the extreme North-East to 2,980 cubic metres over a period of 290 days.

“These forecasts are statements of probability and are based on the available scientific knowledge and data.

“Man’s knowledge is still limited and, therefore, some margin of error within tolerable limits is not unusual.

“The conditions that determine the rainfall pattern over Nigeria have become more variable due to the effects of climate change and global warming.

“’This is a big challenge for atmospheric scientists all over the world. NIMET will continue to monitor the trend in all parts of the country and publish updates as the rainy season progresses,’ Mr. Anuforom said.

He explained that the early release of the forecast is to create good lead-time for adequate preparation against risks and hazards associated with weather and climate extremes.
The Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, who was represented by Clement Dosunmu, the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, said weather information is important to humanity.

She urged NIMET to fulfill to its mandate by ensuring that the information got to the end users in time.

“The information in these publications are useful for planning, decision-making and policy formulation, especially in those sectors of the economy that are sensitive to weather.

“It is expected that the early release of the 2013 SRP will enable all stakeholders apply the information in planning and executing their activities in such a way as to reduce vulnerability to climate extremes,’’ Ms. Oduah said.

The Flood Prediction System (FPS) that I developed on my project also predicted much rain that will wash away land, houses, and destroy infrastructures this 2013. The prediction show that there'll be an extremely serious flood by 2014 and 2015

Hopefully this time state governments, especially lagos will start clearing drains and putting everything in other. So that rain won't cause floods which will shout down the nations commercial hub or any other city. Let's see they're smart enough.

Massive rainfall = massive flooding = ecological disaster.

Global warming is real, sadly, Africa and especially Nigeria is way too backwards to be focused on precautionary measures.. I am already concerned that most of the animals in our bushes are dead from last years flooding. Farmlands will not even be conducive for farming this year either after last years flood. Many homes are yet to be rebuilt from last years flood. Many families are yet to resettle after last years flood. No attention has been paid to the diseases and sicknesses that last years flood would have aggravated and here we are looking forward to another year of flooding.. cry

My assembly man neighbour moved his family from bayelsa during last years flood and looked oblivious to the fact that many of his district men and women and children were suffering from the same fate he was and dont have the means to up and go rent a luxury apartment in another state like himself.

May Mother Nature have mercy on us....

NIMET's forecasts have been pretty accurate in recent years, but unfortunately other agencies of government have not been proactive in mitigating the effects of the predicted natural disasters.

NIMET predicted two devastating rainstorms in 2011 (I remember that they even gave us the exact date of the 2nd rainstorm and they were accurate) but nothing was done to reduce the effect of flooding that accompanied these rainstorms.

NIMET we don hear, govt won't use your info for preventive measure but rather prefer to present relief materials to victims of flood and inturn campaigne for re-election and also uses the oppurtunity to award outrageous contracts to families and friends.

We've done OUR part (NIMET), the rest is for the government and the people living in the predicted zones of extremes to take precautionary measures.

That is why i like the oyibos when they forecast they have no doubt but this NIMET is hesitating by bringing some probable hypothesis.

The oyibo said there will be asteroid yesterday that will pass near the earth like 3 years ago and surely it came to pass yesterday, they foresaw to the hour and minute years ago

NIMET should know if there is climate change and they are not sure if climate has changed that could affect rainfall patern in February mind you climate changes from 25 to 30 uears. The DG is giving the excuse of "man knowledge is still limited "

So Why don't you go and make accurate predictions. When you don't know anything about a field, must you talk They have been making good predictions and for once appreciate some changes in Nigeria. Why must we always condemn everything?

They have there own indices used in predicting rainfall, that is thier own feild, let those that have ear hear what they are saying.NOW you can do your own personal homework by going to search for the total amount of rainfall in those areas.Mind you the flood last year didnt hit most of these area as compared to those of south-south,sout-east,so dont use thesame eye to judge. This is the time nt only to pray bt also open up blocked drainages, discourage falling of trees and government should also have strong emergency response officials on standby for evacuation

Ode!, Na by force to comment?

Anyway, NIMET has done its part, the rest is left to the Federal Government, State Government]and other relevant agencies. Adequate measures should be taken in order to at least reduce to the minimum the effect of this excess rainfall. We don't have to always wait for Natural disasters to claim lives before we act.
