Over 158,000 graduates responded to the recent call for applications by the National Identity Management Commission for 1,750 job openings, sources at the Human Resource Department of the organisation told our correspondent.

It was gathered that the external consultants appointed to manage the recruitment process had submitted the full list of those who applied and were screening the applicants to come up with a shortlist for possible interview.

It was also gathered that a computer-based test would be administered on all shortlisted applicants before the principles of merit, federal character, catchment area and spread, among other considerations, would be applied.

The preliminary report of the consulting firm also showed that there were between 100 and 1,000 per cent over subscription in each of the 94 job functions advertised.

The number could have been more had those who had difficulties in filling the form been able to do so before the close of the application, one of the sources said.

The online application system is a test process, which was adopted to deliberately test the IT usage and competency of the applicants.

It was gathered that those who were unable to fill the simple online application form would not be able to sit for, let alone, pass the computer-based aptitude test; and so, it would be difficult, to employ them, especially now that the commission was in a hurry to kick off the nationwide enrolment process in April 2013.

It was also gathered that successful candidates, who would be employed in batches, would be sent on two to six-week training before they would be finally deployed, and would also be cleared by security agencies.

Meanwhile, enrolment centres have been set up across the 36 states of the federation in readiness for the take-off of the National Identity Number data collection.

The Director, Corporate Communication, NIMC, Mr. Anthony Okwudiafor, said the enrolment centres were located in the commission’s state offices nationwide.

This, he said, followed the successful certification of the premises based on the adoption of global best practices.

“The enrolment centres, which now have a minimum of 10 enrolment units each, will be scaled up to over 20 at the time the process will be formally inaugurated. Each local government area is expected to have at least one functional office for enrolment daily,” he explained.

Okwudiafor also said plans for the deployment of the enrolment units to local government areas and also the deployment of mobile enrolment centres nationwide were ongoing; adding that the pilots for the phases would commence March 2013 shortly before the formal inauguration of the scheme.

The enrolment centres, sources revealed, featured a provision for self registration, air-conditioned waiting room, alternative sources of power and presence of security personnel in most cases.

Our correspondent also found out that the NIMC Pre-Enrolment Portal had also been deployed and was being tested.

The NIMC Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, in an interview recently said the commission was planning for the formal inauguration of the scheme in the second quarter of 2013.

Already, the pilot scheme is experiencing a large turnout, especially in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Calabar.

It is actually the problem of compulsory public education in the country. People go to school to learn to work for money. It would have been a different thing is people learnt to let money work for them. We need financial education or else nothing can be done. Everyday struggling continues
