Remember when the pope came to the United States? How he chided us for not showing mercy? That we should give away what we have to the poor? We are such a wealthy nation. And then remember the great earthquake that took place in 1980 over in Italy? I remember when the pope came in to this ruined area, walked up to the bedside of some poor little wounded Italian man and the pope so benevolently laid his hand on his head and made the sign of the cross, blessed the man and walked off.

John Paul II, "Pilgrimage of Faith"

And the newscasters were telling of the devastation. And then we cut back to the United States and Senator Kennedy looked at the camera with sorrowful eyes and said, "Oh, we Americans, out of mercy we should send at least 45 million dollars to this devastated village so we can reconstruct it." Remember that? Now let me read something out of THE VATICAN BILLIONS by Avro Manhattan, and I think you're going to get as mad as I am right now. I want to bring to your attention the fact that this information was published 10 years ago, and the figures are probably even more startling today.

"The Vatican has large investments with the Rothschilds of Britain, France and America, with the Hambros Bank, with the Credit Suisse in London and Zurich. In the United States it has large investments with the Morgan Bank, the Chase-Manhattan Bank, the First National Bank of New York, the Bankers Trust Company, and others. The Vatican has billions of shares in the most powerful international corporations such as Gulf Oil, Shell, General Motors, Bethlehem Steel, General Electric, International Business Machines, T.W.A., etc. At a conservative estimate, these amount to more than 500 million dollars in the U.S.A. alone.

"In a statement published in connection with a bond prospectus, the Boston archdiocese listed its assets at Six Hundred and Thirty-five Million ($635,891,004), which is 9.9 times its liabilities. This leaves a net worth of Five Hundred and Seventy-one million dollars ($571,704,953). It is not difficult to discover the truly astonishing wealth of the church, once we add the riches of the twenty-eight archdioceses and 122 dioceses of the U.S.A., some of which are even wealthier than that of Boston.

"Some idea of the real estate and other forms of wealth controlled by the Catholic church may be gathered by the remark of a member of the New York Catholic Conference, namely 'that his church probably ranks second only to the United States Government in total annual purchase.' Another statement, made by a nationally syndicated Catholic priest, perhaps is even more telling. 'The Catholic church,' he said, 'must be the biggest corporation in the United States. We have a branch office in every neighborhood. Our assets and real estate holdings must exceed those of Standard Oil, A.T.&T., and U.S. Steel combined. And our roster of dues-paying members must be second only to the tax rolls of the United States Government.'

"The Catholic church, once all her assets have been put together, is the most formidable stockbroker in the world. The Vatican, independently of each successive pope, has been increasingly orientated towards the U.S. The Wall Street Journal said that the Vatican's financial deals in the U.S. alone were so big that very often it sold or bought gold in lots of a million or more dollars at one time.

"The Vatican's treasure of solid gold has been estimated by the United Nations World Magazine to amount to several billion dollars. A large bulk of this is stored in gold ingots with the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank, while banks in England and Switzerland hold the rest. But this is just a small portion of the wealth of the Vatican, which in the U.S. alone, is greater than that of the five wealthiest giant corporations of the country. When to that is added all the real estate, property, stocks and shares abroad, then the staggering accumulation of the wealth of the Catholic church becomes so formidable as to defy any rational assessment.

"The Catholic church is the biggest financial power, wealth accumulator and property owner in existence. She is a greater possessor of material riches than any other single institution, corporation, bank, giant trust, government or state of the whole globe. The pope, as the visible ruler of this immense amassment of wealth, is consequently the richest individual of the twentieth century. No one can realistically assess how much he is worth in terms of billions of dollars."

And I think back about how the pope, the wealthiest man on this planet, walked up to that poor little Italian man lying in that rubble, put his hand on his head, and said, "Bless you," and then walked away and just left him there. That has got to be the height of hypocrisy. And then Sen. Kennedy, the pope's boy over in the United States makes the big pitch to the U.S. people to foot the bill to repair that devastated village, right in the pope's backyard. What a set-up!

Who ever wrote this article is oblivious of how the catholic church is being run. The catholic church is not a one man business church were the general overseer runs the whole show. The pope have no access to any money the catholic church have. There is a vatican bank governor who is incharge of the inflows and outflows of money.
So a pope staying all his life in the vatican will be the richest man on earth? How? Were and when will he then spend the money? Lmao.... This americans and their obsession for the catholic church. The. Current pope who just resigned will live the rest of his life in solltary in a monastery for the rest of his life praying. So how and when will he spend the so-called wealth.
The pope have the final say in the catholic church but the college of cardinals take all the decisions. In the catholic church. Its a pity that everyone is now spewing rubbish because pope benedict resigned due to his failing and fragile health as if he is going back to his home in germany to go and spend money. The pope is still staying in rome.
The catholic church contributes a large sum of money to the welfare and training of seminarians all over the world.

Imagine the richest man on earth about to receive a monthly pension of less than N500 000. People will do anything to drag the Catholic Church to the muds just in a bid to equate it with other corrupt protestant churches.

If it is not out ignorant you made that silly comment, then of what benefit would it be for you since it definitely will not add anything to your life nor congregation since you also did not state where you belong here?

@topic, it is obvious the writer knows nothing about catholic church as the whole epistle is baseless.

The Pope the richest man when every Catholic diocese is administratively autonomous or semi-autonomous and financially independent?.This is as stewpid as stewpid gets.

The catholic church has a long history of crime against humanity. Long history of war. Long history of dictatorship. Long history of slavery. Long history colonisation. Long history of abuse of power. Long history of deceit. Long history of power scuffles. Long history of inquisition. Catholic church is a roman revision of the doctrines of CHUKWU. The catholic church is a mockery of CHUKWU. A church where half of the congregation don't understand a word from the hymns they sing everyday. A church that has stolen the heart of the sons/daughters of CHUKWU and has led them to disgraceful lust over everything that is not of CHUKWU. The catholic church and most other churches is a curse to my people. CHUKWU is angry because the his children have been taken over by many devils. CHUKWU would take back the souls of his people. I am a dibia for CHUKWU. You can call me izuchukwu.

Honestly, if not for the Humanitarian Aid the Catholic Church gave to the Igbo Race of the Biafran Nation, through Caritas International, during the most brutal time of the war, your father would'nt have lived to give birth to you.

If not for the catholic church coming and deceiving my people to forsake CHUKWU and insult their fore fathers, there won't be a Nigeria or Biafra. Their would just be Igboland. And caritas international did jack shit.

Its funny how ordinary minded people are now dragging Christ's holy church into beer parlour political discussion sites like nairaland.

Fear no dey people body again sef abi? Una just dey open una gutter mouth dey yan rubbïsh just because una think say vatican be like una pastors business corporation wen una dey call church.

So what exactly is being portrayed here? envy, stúpidity, illiteracy, narrow-mindedness, or something I don't know about?

I'm not a catholic but I've been following the global footprints of the catholic church and they're at the forefront of contentious issues ordinary churches shy away from just because they don't wanna loose members while the church has always stood its ground 'cos she is not scared of loosing her members. I can't imagine myself criticizing something I know nothing of or have not even the slightest idea about. From my study of histoty and other disciplines I've developed this respect & high regards for the catholic church if not for anything, for the fact that they've withstood the greatest political and religious turbulence spanning 2,000 years right since apostolic times.

I know for a fact that the universal church has single handedly upheld christianity while most of the others including YOURS are just opportunist using the name of Jesus to make money for the purchase of private jets. Even some of your so called pastors know they have a lot to learn from catholic church.

".....and the gates of HELL shall not prevail...." keeps ringing a bell in my head. In case this isn't ringing a bell in ur skull, I guess you're just a hater.

Anybody that says the catholic church is not a political organisation is either ignorant or a devil. Simple and short. It is so glaringly obvious. And don't be deceived by their anti-gay stance. They are just trying to create an illusion of duality and opposite. You just have to look at the setup of the gay marriage law in britain to understand the politics behind it. When will my people listen and see pigs for what they are. When will they? Listen and imbibe the wisdom of CHUKWU. If you need something, pray to CHUKWU and work towards it yourself. Refuse the gifts of vile spirits; because, though they appear beautiful in the outside, they are filled with deadly poisons. Do not dine with your enemy. Pigs are your enemies. Listen before you fall into their hole.
