To answer your title question;
"It is church doctrine,and it is not gaining ground but has been the norm since christianity was institutionalised at about 17 hundred years ago.
To your second question;
Diversity has been with christianity since it's very early days.It was this very diversity that the early church fathers and the church of Rome tried so hard to eradicate by resorting to brutal persecutions and burnings of alternative literatures,so that only one denomination would stand,and that is the Catholic church.
Well,christianity is back to the diversity of the early times again.Things have swung full circle back to the way it was before,and there is nothing anyone can do about it.
All those killings and burnings could be said to have been in vain.
