The Federal Government has said it will address unemployment through the implementation of the National Industrial Skills Development Programme.

The initiative is expected to produce 29,875 readily employable graduates annually, thus reducing unemployment and enhancing national security.

A statement on Sunday quoted the Minister of Trade and Investments, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, as saying that the skill acquisition programme was designed to attract resource empowerment for the trainees upon graduation.

He said this during the inauguration of the Industrial Training Funds’ headquarters annex in Jos.

Aganga said his ministry, in collaboration with the ITF, had put structures in place to ensure that trainees from the NISDP were empowered to be either gainfully employed or able to set up their own businesses.

He said, “Therefore, the strategy of the Ministry of Trade and Investment, working together with the ITF, is to first of all identify the critical sectors of the economy where we have comparative and competitive advantage.

“The second thing is to link those sectors or industries that we have identified to innovation, research and development. Then, the third thing is to link those sectors to industrial skills development. That is where the NISDP comes in.”

“That is the path that we have started already. If we allow this to go on for the next three years, we will make significant impact in terms of turning our quantity advantage into productive advantage – where most Nigerians will be gainfully employed and also have the opportunity to move up the value chain with respect to the skills they have acquired,” he added.

The statement also quoted the Director-General, ITF, Prof. Longmas Wapmuk, as saying the agency would establish 37 industrial skills training centres across the country.

This is in addition to sector-specific training centres for manufacturing, agro-allied, construction and other critical sectors of the economy.

If it were to be in those days of our ancestors, I would have invoked the double wrath of 'AMADIOHA' & 'SANGO' to strike you down.

I'm ashamed & disappointed at our Nigerian leaders. Even the citizens have lost faith in them to an extent where anything they say/do is termed FALSE and seen as another avenue to embezzle public funds.

God please help this Nation. We are wailing!!

The population of youth in this country is more 20million. Training only bt a few without provision of employment is stil like a babe without breast feeding milk.

Haven't people learnt their lessons yet? Was dis not how many persons allowd themselves to be deceivd by Professional Critics and their own Cynicism when d YOU-Win programme startd? Today, more than a thousand youths who were smart enuf to mute dier own fears and took dat opportunity are living their dreams and growing their businesses courtesy of YOU-Win, whilst sm odas are biting their fingers. That programme hv workd a 100%, probably more than any such programme in 9ja's history. Wise people, whilst bn cautious of course, wud try any opportunity that comes dier ways; and wud not particularly listen to d fears of oda FRUSTRATED persons nor the whinnings of Political jobbers. Not just in dis case, but for most times... Nuff said

They should be advised to train many of the science graduates in Information Technology. That is the growth sector in Nigeria with few professionals and an emphasis on skills rather than degrees. Also you do not need to know anyone to get a job in that sector if you have the right skills, and in most cases you can be self employed as a consultant.

gen2briz: Why do they have to train graduate after graduating?

Because most do not have employable skills. How is your history degree going to help my company unless I train you in something? Well, most companies do not want to spend the money required to train anybody. They want already trained personnel.
