N100 Monthly Charge On First-Bank ATM Withdrawals by Adesiji77: 10:02pm On Mar 04, 2013
First Bank customers using the Automated Teller Machines for cash withdrawals are to pay N100 monthly, with effect from this month, according to a notice released in Abuja on Monday. The notice for the new charge captioned 'Card Maintenance Fee' reads: "Dear valued customer, in order to serve you better, from March 2013, a monthly N100 card maintenance fee will be charged for all cash withdrawals within the month.’’

Some customers, however, condemned the introduction and called for sanctions from the regulatory body.

Mr Joshua Abraham, a trader, said it was unfortunate that First Bank should introduce such a charge.

``I did not even notice, but if that is the case, they want to discourage us.

Mrs Uju Nwanze, a legal practitioner, said the CBN should stop the charge.

`` This is another way to get back the N100 charges they just stopped recently on use of ATM cards. These banks are good at exploiting people, they did not even give prior notice like sending text messages.''

Also, Ejiro Fidel, a civil servant, said First Bank should not copy the new generation banks to rip off customers.

``They did not even care to inform their customers about this development, this is unlike them. Civil servants use First Bank a lot because we believe they are better than most of these new banks.

``What maintenance are they doing on the card, this is very wrong and I hope that those in charge would stop them from doing so.

``I think that they should focus on how to encourage customers to use the card than discouraging them. This new charge is really anti-customer friendly,’’ he said.

It would be recalled that the Bankers' Committee meeting of November 2012, scrapped the N100 interbank charge on use of ATM cards.

First Bank had on February 11, increased its charges on interbank money transfer, against moves by the Central Bank of Nigeria for a downward review of bank charges on customers.

I believe this calls for one of my famous ILLUMATI posts, but seeing as this is so absurd and ridiculously asinine, I don't think it's gonna be funny at all.

First Bank are THIEVES! Simple. GTB FTW!

If true, I better withdraw all my money to Gtbank bit by bit. Besides, gtbank has better services. The only thing i am gaining is the money they keep for me and nothing MORE. With the huge customer GtB keep getting, I could feel them expanding. But if it is first bank, no way. Too slow @ taking decisions. At times, it's because of competition from new generation banks like GtB that they decide to change the outlook of their banks.

Wrong moves by 1st bank. I sugest bulk of customers shud move their account to other banks and i bet they wud call with a promise to be paying customers N100 every month on the use of an old bank.

If not stoppd, dis wi b copied by oda banks& d ripoff of customers wud continue.Wen CBN stupidly abolished d 100 for use of other banks ATM,I laffed. How are d banks to maintain& increase d deployment of ATM wen d incentive for doing so was abolished, alas now this!In case pple don't know, dis wud generate more money for d banks dan d abolished method. If for e.g 1st bank has 10m bank customers, all who wud invariably b charged dis fee,in a mth,d bank gets a guaranteed N1b,evn if their atm packs up d whole mth.CBN Policy makers starting frm d days of Soludo, wen d CBN was made to b an independent financial regulating body, exarcebated wt dis mallam's tenure,av always thought wt their as ses dan their brains!

I have said it every now and then that what most of our commercial banks are doing is not the real business of banking. Most of our banks are mere coupon house, and no body is really taking it up.
They can just decide to charge one meaningless five naira on all the accounts whenever they need money. now multiply the five naira by the number of customer of that bank. isn't that a huge summ? MEN! OUR BANKS ARE MERE THIEF'S, AND I CAN CONFRONT ANY BANKER ON THIS.
