Men can increase fertility by icing their scrotum, the Nigerian lecturer said.

Cooling the male scrotum with ice could improve male fertility, a lecturer in the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, University of Lagos, UNILAG, Idowu Taiwo, said on Wednesday.

The University don and fertility expert said in Lagos that male fertility has in recent times nose-dived considerably, increasing the rate of male infertility to as much as 40 per cent.

Mr. Taiwo made the submission in reaction to a recent invention of men’s pants called “snowballs”, which has a mechanism for cooling the scrotum.

The lecturer said the process that produces spermatozoa in men is called spermatogenesis, pointing out that if a man’s sperm count is low, because of the inefficiency of the process arising from heat, reduction in temperature would enhance it.

Heat, he said, destroys sperm cells and also affects production of sperm cells, adding that a look at the male anatomy would show that the scrotal sack is outside the body.

“When the baby is in the belly, his testes are in the abdomen. But when the baby is born, the testes descend to that sack. God made it so, to keep the temperature of the scrotum low,” he said, adding that the natural design of the scrotum, which keeps it in a special sack outside the body, was made so by God, to keep it cool.

He said the natural the logic of the design of the scrotum was that if there is anything that can reduce temperature, it would help sperm production, adding that if your sperm count is low, it is likely to cause fertility problem.

The university teacher said that putting ice on the scrotum could help boost sperm production and increase men’s chances of becoming fathers, pointing out that people who seat on hot objects during working hours would have fertility issues, hence the need for them to change job if they want to be reproductive.

“Once temperature is reduced for the scrotum, sperm production will likely be higher. That is the mechanism. There is no drug involved and no magic,’’ he said.

This is quite an ambigous statement. Is it based on research? What does icing entail? I mean, at what temperature is it safe to begin or terminate icing (the testis is maximally operational at 35 degrees). How does one determine if the testicles are 'overheating'?. Cells shut down or function minimally at low temperature (remember the cold morning after a rainy night when you find it so hard getting out of thee bed)
Folks, before you sit on that ice pack, do a little more research
