Observation: all but Benni McCarthy are midfielders and defenders.

Also, all the winners from 1993 to date are strikers/forwards (Yekini 93, Weah 95, Kanu 96, Ikpeba 97, Kanu 99, Mboma 2000, Diouf 2001, Diouf 2002, Eto'o 2003, 2004, 2005, 2010, Drogba 2006, Kanoute 2007, Adebayor 2008, Drogba 2009) , except Yaya Toure (2011, 2012) and probably Amuneke (94) and Hadji(98) who were attcking midfielders.

Telling us goals decide the game and people see you only if you score. A midfielder has to do 3 times more exceptionally a striker, a defender 5 times and a goal keeper 7 times before you can win award.

Not sure what Benni McCarthy is doing on your list. Finidi, Fadiga and Essien were great players, but he didn't quite do enough to be named APOY.
Re: African Footballers That Never Won Apoty Award by Nobody: 7:52am On Mar 09, 2013
Benni did well at 1998 Nations cup. He also did well in Porto. He is a fine striker.

Essien would have won APOY award if he wasn't unlucky enough to be playing in Eto'o's time. Yaya did not do more than Essien did 2004/6 to win APOY. Adebayor scored 30 goals for Arsenal (never mind the fact he lost more than twice scoring opportunities) and won APOY award.

I think it should have been given to Okocha at least once. he deserved it at some point.

I've noticed that in Africa, anyone other than strikers are under-appreciated.

Kinda unfair to Aboutreika. The dude balled, but most times this African footballer award favours those who play in European leagues. Dont think I know an African dat won it playing for an African club.

A certain Lucas Radebe is missing on that list, Peter Ndlovu also did well for Conventry City then but guess he was ignored due to Zimbabwe's limited appearance at AFCON, Mark Williams did more for South Africa at 1996 AFCON and I still wondered why he was not among the top contender.

Same 96, Nig won olympic gold in football with the likes of Kanu, Amokachi etc on fire. That surely affected Williams chances

I hate this award just like the world footballer award. It should be THE BEST STRIKER IN AFRICA OR IN THE WORLD.

Okacha is a disgrace, upon all the skill and over hyped dribbling he has nothing to show for,all he is interest was just money.

okocha's inability to win APOY has been attributed to hardluck

Okocha caused it. He is very stingy and likes money so much. Big clubs wanted him but ignored dem at his prime.

Dat is y it is always gud to b gud. Help d needy, show luv and care to d poor. B a philantropist. It is d repercussion dat he is facing now. I dont pity him at all.
